Book excerpt: Through a selection of family homes, Darren Palmer gives us an insight into their occupants' relationship to their living spaces, providing information as well as solutions to questions we may have about what some of our own design challenges may currently be, or may be in the future. Whether single parents with one child, married couples with kids, older working couples with grown children and grandchildren, middle-aged couples with no kids and no pets - our lives have different demands, and our homes reflect this, in every way. Each family group will have a different set of needs and challenges; the associated constraints, requirements and solutions resulting in specially designed spaces that are as individual as all the people living within them. Darren's book demonstrates in engaging, information-filled text and stunning photography that we can draw inspiration and practical solutions from the way different families have tailored various interior design elements - storage, lighting, furniture, materials, larger and smaller spaces - to their unique brief. In HomeSpace, we'll find out what makes people happy and fulfilled through the homes they have created, homes that work to support the family in their lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arab American women have played an essential role in shaping their homes, their communities, and their country for centuries. Their contributions, often marginalized academically and culturally, are receiving long- overdue attention with the emerging interdisciplinary field of Arab American women’s studies. The collected essays in this volume capture the history and significance of Arab American women, addressing issues of migration, transformation, and reformation as these women invented occupations, politics, philosophies, scholarship, literature, arts, and, ultimately, themselves. Arab American women brought culture and absorbed culture; they brought relationships and created relationships; they brought skills and talents and developed skills and talents. They resisted inequities, refused compliance, and challenged representation. They engaged in politics, civil society, the arts, education, the market, and business. And they told their own stories. These histories, these genealogies, these narrations that are so much a part of the American experiment are chronicled in this volume, providing an indispensable resource for scholars and activists.

Book Love Your Home Space Planning Strategies

Download or read book Love Your Home Space Planning Strategies written by Manuel Manuelian and published by Manuelian Architects. This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a lot we like about old houses. They are small but well built. The detailing is simple but strong. They shelter our memories of the past and harbor our hopes for the future. Yet, romantic as they are, old houses are rarely cherished. Indeed, they often lack adequate storage and bathroom space, an open modern kitchen, and the general amenities and functional spaces a modern lifestyle demands. Frustrated homeowners start looking for alternatives, not realizing that careful space planning and a few design modifications can transform their old house into a practical, comfortable and enjoyable home shaped to their specific needs and taste. We created this booklet with the purpose to inspire you to look into the drawbacks of your own home in the light of the options available. Here you will find real life examples of clever space planning solutions with easy to compare before-and-after floor plans. Whether working within the existing footprint or adding onto the old structure, the goal is always to make the optimum use of space in the simplest and most cost-effective way possible.

Book The Sacred Monstrous

    Book Details:
  • Author : Wendy C. Hamblet
  • Publisher : Lexington Books
  • Release : 2004
  • ISBN : 9780739107430
  • Pages : 130 pages

Download or read book The Sacred Monstrous written by Wendy C. Hamblet and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2004 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wedding an analysis of relevant anthropological literature and philosophical theory, this important book re-positions violence--long trivialized by philosophers as an incidental or anomalous feature of humanity--as a central concern for ethical thought. Wendy Hamblet focuses on a fundamental paradox that emerges when well-meaning communities and individuals attempt to implement their ideals in our social, or socialized, world. Very often the unintended consequences of these individual or communal ideals run headlong into the brute fact of bloody human engagement. Through her investigation of violence-legitimization in myth and ancient tales, philosophical accounts (from Plato to Nietzsche), the concept of home as 'refuge, ' and recent social scientific data, Hamblet takes up the charge that violence is steeped in our being--it pervades human history and is embedded in the ethos of our modern institutions--and gives us essential tools for better understanding how violence actually operates.

Book Security Theology Surveillance and the Politics of Fear

Download or read book Security Theology Surveillance and the Politics of Fear written by Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-28 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This examination of Palestinian experiences of life and death within the context of Israeli settler colonialism broadens the analytical horizon to include those who 'keep on existing' and explores how Israeli theologies and ideologies of security, surveillance and fear can obscure violence and power dynamics while perpetuating existing power structures. Drawing from everyday aspects of Palestinian victimization, survival, life and death, and moving between the local and the global, Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian introduces and defines her notion of 'Israeli security theology' and the politics of fear within Palestine/Israel. She relies on a feminist analysis, invoking the intimate politics of the everyday and centering the Palestinian body, family life, memory and memorialization, birth and death as critical sites from which to examine the settler colonial state's machineries of surveillance which produce and maintain a political economy of fear that justifies colonial violence.

Book Living the City in Africa

Download or read book Living the City in Africa written by Brigit Obrist and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2013 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on cities worldwide still takes its cue from cities in Europe and the US, which are seen as the standard model. However, cities in the global South are undergoing a much more rapid transformation, including multiple interlinked transitions, with Africa featuring the highest urbanization rates world-wide. Scholars therefore call for a new approach to urban studies which examines cities from a more global comparative perspective. This book discusses the new approach, which pays added attention to the role that societal creativity plays in processes of urbanization, instead of concentrating exclusively on expert-driven planning and intervention. Especially in fast-growing cities with weaker institutional capacity for interventions, the interplay between intervention and invention, between expert and societal agency, becomes more tangible and all the more significant. Book Geographies of Care

Download or read book Geographies of Care written by Christine Milligan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001. As care services in Britain have moved from institutional to community-based environments, there has been a simultaneous shift in those agencies concerned with the provision of such care and support. this new environment of care is a complex one, involving numerous different actors and agencies that operate across various different spatial and organizational levels of the policy process. The implementation and success of care policies depend in part on the inter-relationships between these various players. This book examines these inter-relationships, illustrated by an in-depth empirical study of policy makers and informal care providers concerned with the frail elderly in Scotland. Taking the voluntary sector as a lens through which these inter-relationships are explored, it analyzes how voluntary support is affected by differing local contexts of care and what this means in terms of locally based care outcomes.

Book Landscapes of Care

Download or read book Landscapes of Care written by Andrew Power and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the increasing shift of care from state residential services to community-based support, this book examines the complex geographies of family caregiving for young adults with intellectual disabilities. It traces how family ’carers’ are directly and indirectly affected by a broad array of law and policy, including family policy, disability legislation, and health and community care restructuring policy. Each of these has material and institutional effects and is premised on the discourses, ideologies, and interactions in the state over time. Focusing on the welfare models of England, the US and Ireland, this book compares the welfare ideologies in each country and examines how the specific historical, cultural, and political contexts give rise to different landscapes of care and disability. Further, the book explores the unique lifeworlds of family carers of young adults with intellectual disability within the broader landscape of care in which they are situated.
