Book excerpt: Author Jack Watson narrates the story of his lifes journey, from his meager beginnings in his grannys four-room shack in Oregon to his career as a successful entrepreneur. In his memoir, Homers Son, he tells the tale of a boy who overcame a host of adversities to become prosperous and live to old age. Watson remembers growing up during the tough times of the Great Depression, living with his brother in a childrens home, being raised by his Baptist grandmother, attending Oregon State College, excelling at boxing, starting a family, and working in the manufacturing business for forty-six years. Against the backdrop of being abandoned by his father, Watson tells how he persevered to achieve his dreams. He shares a story not only of success, but also of indiscretions, alcohol, separation, betrayal, loss, and sorrowa life that was shaped early on by a wandering and absent father and a conflicted mother. He acted without conscience, inflicting hurt and sorrow on the people he loved, and who loved him. Even so, his second wife and love of his life, Martina, brought tranquility and redemption into his life; his transgressions became a distant, sad memory. Homers Son communicates how Watsons professional ambition, hard work, and selfish self-gratification drove his life as an adultand also demonstrates the inspirational power of perseverance and of pursuing your dreams, regardless of your circumstances.

Book Homer s Odyssey and the Near East

Download or read book Homer s Odyssey and the Near East written by Bruce Louden and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-01-06 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Odyssey's larger plot is composed of a number of distinct genres of myth, all of which are extant in various Near Eastern cultures (Mesopotamian, West Semitic, and Egyptian). Unexpectedly, the Near Eastern culture with which the Odyssey has the most parallels is the Old Testament. Consideration of how much of the Odyssey focuses on non-heroic episodes - hosts receiving guests, a king disguised as a beggar, recognition scenes between long-separated family members - reaffirms the Odyssey's parallels with the Bible. In particular the book argues that the Odyssey is in a dialogic relationship with Genesis, which features the same three types of myth that comprise the majority of the Odyssey: theoxeny, romance (Joseph in Egypt), and Argonautic myth (Jacob winning Rachel from Laban). The Odyssey also offers intriguing parallels to the Book of Jonah, and Odysseus' treatment by the suitors offers close parallels to the Gospels' depiction of Christ in Jerusalem.

Book Homer s Winged Words

Download or read book Homer s Winged Words written by Steve Reece and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-05-20 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over 2500 years many of the most learned scholars of the Greek language have concerned themselves with the topic of etymology. The most productive source of difficult, even inexplicable, words was Homer’s 28,000 verses of epic poetry. Steve Reece proposes an approach to elucidating the meanings of some of these difficult words that finds its inspiration primarily in Milman Parry’s oral-formulaic theory. He proposes that during the long period of oral transmission acoustic uncertainties, especially regarding word boundaries, were continually occurring: a bard uttered one collocation of words, but his audience thought it heard another. The consequent resegmentation of words and phrases is the probable cause of some of the etymologically inexplicable words in our Homeric texts.
