Book Calder n in the German Lands and the Low Countries

Download or read book Calder n in the German Lands and the Low Countries written by Henry W. Sullivan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-10-29 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book recounts the afterlife of the great Golden Age dramatist Pedro Calderón de la Barca in Dutch and German-speaking Europe. The high quality of the German critical and philosophical tradition has led to a far greater appreciation of Calderón outside than inside his native Spain, and it is in the German territories that the playwright's influence has been most remarkable and widespread. Professor Sullivan documents and analyses Calderón's reception and influence on the stage and on playwriting, criticism, philosophy and music in these territories. In addressing his book to students of both the German and the Spanish traditions Professor Sullivan has supplied the necessary background to both cultures and has rendered all quotations into English. The range of material will also make the book important for students of philosophy, comparative drama and German opera.

Book Discursive Renovatio in Lope de Vega and Calder n

Download or read book Discursive Renovatio in Lope de Vega and Calder n written by Joachim Küpper and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a new approach to Spanish Baroque drama, inspired by Foucauldian discourse archeology, whose rare fusion of meticulous philology and ambitious theory will be exciting and fruitful both for specialists of Spanish literature and for anyone invested in the history of European thought. Detailed readings are dedicated to some of the most prominent plays by Lope de Vega and Calderón de la Barca, both autos sacramentales (El viaje del alma; El divino Orfeo; La lepra de Constantino) and comedias (El castigo sin venganza; El príncipe constante; El médico de su honra). The "archeological" perspective cast on the plays implies an integration of their discourse-historical "foils", from pagan antiquity through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, as well as a discussion of related discourses, mainly theological, philosophical and historiographical. A separate "excursus" suggests a reconsideration of the common manner in which the discursive relation between the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, Mannerism and the Baroque is conceptualized.

Book Frances Calder n De La Barca

Download or read book Frances Calder n De La Barca written by Howard T. Fisher and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-01-07 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frances Erskine Inglis, daughter of a prominent lawyer and Freemason, was born in Edinburgh in 1804. As the Marquesa de Calderón de la Barca, she died in Madrid's Royal Palace in 1882. During her life she was a teacher, legation hostess, and successful author, remembered now for her travel classic Life in Mexico and semi-fictional The Attaché in Madrid. But her books tell nothing about the greater part of her far-ranging career, which led through a half-dozen countries in response to bankruptcy, extortion, marriage, diplomacy, and revolution. For this colorful biography the authors have drawn from many sources, including contemporary memoirs, diaries, and numerous letters by and about Madame Calderón. Sometimes her trenchant commentary on people and places flared into newspaper controversy. From all that can be discovered about her, she emerges as a person of high abilities, energy, and nerve. In addition to the spirited woman at the center of the story, there are also her extraordinary family and a cast of memorable minor characters.

Book Four Comedies by Pedro Calder n de la Barca

Download or read book Four Comedies by Pedro Calder n de la Barca written by Pedro Calderón de la Barca and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calderón, the great dramatist of Spain's Golden Age, was a skilled writer of comedy. His serious dramas have long been highly regarded in the English-speaking world, but his many sparkling comedies are an untapped reservoir for the contemporary theater. The four plays in this volume, three of which appear in English for the first time, have been translated by Kenneth Muir, the noted British scholar and director. These are comedies of intrigue. They turn on mysterious, quarrels, and jealousies, and they abound in complication and misunderstandings, yet in the end all is explained, to the delight of the audience. Muir's long experience with acting and directing and his keen ear for the nuances of the English language, together with his perceptive critical scholarship, have enabled him to produce a text that actors can speak naturally, and that modern audiences can enjoy as did the audiences of seventeenth-century Spain. The graceful, poetical dialogue and the masterly stagecraft of Calderón are undiminished in these deft translations. The plays featured are From Bad to Worse, The Secret Spoken Aloud, The Worst is Not Always Certain, and The Advantages and Disadvantages of a Name. Ann L. Mackenzie has provided an introduction to each play and notes on the text that will be useful to the actors and directors who seek to present these comedies as they were intended—on the stage.
