I have seen kindness, love and hope at a homeless shelter. Siloam Mission is named after a pool where, in Biblical times, Jesus healed a blind man. In this tradition, the Mission has a medical clinic, and I have had the privilege of working there. The homeless men and women I have met at Siloam have taught me profound lessons about perseverance through suffering, expressing joy in dire circumstances, and the rewards of service to those in need. I want to share those lessons with you.

Book excerpt: Suddenly you're homeless - what's the worst that can happen? Here's my year of No Fixed Address spent with crazies, druggies, con men, prostitutes and a surprising number of really decent people. Be prepared - I wasn't. An unwanted divorce led to the loss of my house and business, bringing on stress, depression, low self-esteem and, I'm ashamed to say, heavy drinking. In that state finding a solution to the multiple problems in my life was more than I could handle. When you are down, your focus is just getting through each day. I had naively believed that the welfare society would offer broad help; what I painfully discovered was that there is a multi-stage filtering with hurdles through which you have to navigate blindfold - there is no guide which tells you what to expect. I hope that in some measure my book offers that. But for all the feelings of fear, inadequacy and hopelessness there were some compensations. I met a rich array of people, out-and-out crazies, druggies, smart crooks, devious prostitutes and heard some amazing stories. And to my great surprise a number of these individuals were kind, friendly and helpful. The whole experience changed my politics and view of the world. Don't think homelessness could not happen to you, it can to anybody.

Book A Gift of Hope

Download or read book A Gift of Hope written by Danielle Steel and published by Delacorte Press. This book was released on 2012-10-30 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her powerful memoir His Bright Light, #1 New York Times bestselling author Danielle Steel opened her heart to share the devastating story of the loss of her beloved son. In A Gift of Hope, she shows us how she transformed that pain into a campaign of service that enriched her life beyond what she could imagine. For eleven years, Danielle Steel took to the streets with a small team to help the homeless of San Francisco. She worked anonymously, visiting the “cribs” of the city’s most vulnerable citizens under cover of darkness, distributing food, clothing, bedding, tools, and toiletries. She sought no publicity for her efforts and remained anonymous throughout. Now she is speaking to bring attention to their plight. In this unflinchingly honest and deeply moving memoir, the famously private author speaks out publicly for the first time about her work among the most desperate members of our society. She offers achingly acute portraits of the people she met along the way—and issues a heartfelt call for more effective action to aid this vast, deprived population. Determined to supply the homeless with the basic necessities to keep them alive, she ends up giving them something far more powerful: a voice. By turns candid and inspirational, Danielle Steel’s A Gift of Hope is a true act of advocacy and love.

Book Reading the Homeless

Download or read book Reading the Homeless written by Eungjun Min and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1999-06-30 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As one of our country's major social problems, homelessness is often in the news. The media tend to portray the homeless as drunk, stoned, crazy, or sick individuals—a portrayal that is only partly accurate and represents an obstacle to our understanding of the wider social implications of this complex issue. This edited collection examines the various ways—both verbal and visual—in which the homeless have been portrayed by the media from the 1980s to the present day. The contributors apply different frameworks, ranging from phenomenology to culture studies, to analyze the characteristics, implications, and consequences of the stories and images disseminated by the media.

Download or read book Homeless written by Joshua D. Phillips and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-10-03 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A half-century after the "War on Poverty" of Lyndon Johnson, poverty rates remain unchanged. Scholars have advanced polarized theories about the causes of poverty, as politicians have debated how (or if) to fund welfare programs. Yet little research has been conducted where the poor are provided a platform to speak on their own behalf. While it is important to understand how economic systems affect the homeless, it is equally important to learn about the day-to-day realities faced by those who rely on public policies for survival. Drawing on the author's experience working in the homeless community, this book presents some of their stories of loss, abuse, addiction, and marginalization through interviews, observations, and ethnographic research.

Research on this population has existed since the 1980s, but most teachers are unaware of the unique needs of these highly vulnerable students or the laws that exist to protect them. Although they primarily need housing, students experiencing homelessness also need responsive school environments. In language accessible to busy practitioners, this book presents research on homelessness as it impacts children in school and lays out for teachers what is known, and as yet unknown, about how best to serve these students in K-12 and as they prepare for what comes next. Perfect for courses that aim to provide pre-service teachers with proven strategies for reaching underserved student populations.

Book The Eternal State of Homelessness

Download or read book The Eternal State of Homelessness written by Vinoo Jain and published by Anti-Chri$. This book was released on 2020-12-31 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Eternal State of Homelessness parallels the plight and suffering of the homeless individuals we see around us with what eternal homelessness must be like. Their plight and suffering serve a purpose; they paint a vivid picture of what our eternal existence might be like if we do not stop, take notice, and prepare accordingly. This book describes the consequences of not playing by ironic rules associated with a level playing field. These upside down rules bring ultimate balance and justice to the Universe. On this level playing field, amongst mortals Death is batting a thousand. As such, a day is coming where role reversal will occur where their suffering now, though temporary, may provide them with an eternal home, and our comfort now, though temporary, may reward us with eternal homelessness. To be fair, the homeless should hold up cardboard signs that say, "Behold, I am a picture of what you may one day become. My suffering is but for a moment; yours is for eternity."
