Download or read book Missing Middle Housing written by Daniel G. Parolek and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2020-07-14 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, there is a tremendous mismatch between the available housing stock in the US and the housing options that people want and need. The post-WWII, auto-centric, single-family-development model no longer meets the needs of residents. Urban areas in the US are experiencing dramatically shifting household and cultural demographics and a growing demand for walkable urban living. Missing Middle Housing, a term coined by Daniel Parolek, describes the walkable, desirable, yet attainable housing that many people across the country are struggling to find. Missing Middle Housing types—such as duplexes, fourplexes, and bungalow courts—can provide options along a spectrum of affordability. In Missing Middle Housing, Parolek, an architect and urban designer, illustrates the power of these housing types to meet today’s diverse housing needs. With the benefit of beautiful full-color graphics, Parolek goes into depth about the benefits and qualities of Missing Middle Housing. The book demonstrates why more developers should be building Missing Middle Housing and defines the barriers cities need to remove to enable it to be built. Case studies of built projects show what is possible, from the Prairie Queen Neighborhood in Omaha, Nebraska to the Sonoma Wildfire Cottages, in California. A chapter from urban scholar Arthur C. Nelson uses data analysis to highlight the urgency to deliver Missing Middle Housing. Parolek proves that density is too blunt of an instrument to effectively regulate for twenty-first-century housing needs. Complete industries and systems will have to be rethought to help deliver the broad range of Missing Middle Housing needed to meet the demand, as this book shows. Whether you are a planner, architect, builder, or city leader, Missing Middle Housing will help you think differently about how to address housing needs for today’s communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three billion people, almost half the world¿s population, live in areas where malaria transmission occurs. Malaria is endemic in 107 countries in tropical & subtropical regions, with sub-Saharan Africa hardest hit. About 400 million cases of malaria occur each year, leading to 1 million deaths. Over 80% of these deaths occur among African children under the age of 5. Funding to combat malaria has increased in recent years. International funding for malaria control has risen more than tenfold over the past decade. This report assesses progress in malaria control & analyzes how well countries are making available key interventions that reduce the malaria burden. Emphasizes progress across sub-Saharan Africa -- whose countries face the greatest malaria burden. Illus.

Book excerpt: An econometric model of private land-use decisions is used to project land use to 2030 for each county in the continental U.S. On a nat. scale, forest area is projected to increase overall between 0.1 & 0.2% per year between now & 2030. However, forest area is projected to decrease in a majority of regions, including the key forestry regions of the South & the Pacific Northwest Westside. Urban area is projected to increase by 68 million acres, & cropland, pasture, rangeland, & Conservation Reserve Program land is projected to decline in area. Regional econometric models are needed to better represent region-specific economic relationships. County-level models of forest fragmentation indices are estimated for the Western U.S. Illus.
Download or read book American Exports Why Have They Lagged written by Wendell H. McCulloch and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2008-04 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing U.S. trade deficit is a source of concern to everyone. This study identifies 18 obstacles or disincentives to American exports. It is limited to the export side of the trade equation, & in its specialized setting, provides a great deal of historical & background material on factors that depress U.S. exports. The study assigns a 25% blame for declining exports on the strong dollar, & examines whether the present international monetary system of floating currency rates is the cause of the dollar¿s strength. It concludes that the system is not to blame. Given worldwide political unrest, oil price shocks, & divergence of major countries¿ economic policies, a fixed -- as opposed to floating -- currency exchange rate system could not have been maintained.

Covers: (1) recent changes within the electric utility industry that involved utility holding co. (UHC); (2) the effect of these changes on the SEC admin. of the Public Utility Holding Co. Act (PUHCA) of 1935, as amended; & (3) the relationship between SEC, the FERC, & state regulators in protecting consumer & investor interests in the changing industry. PUHCA is designed to discourage UHC from structuring their operations so as to frustrate effective state regulation of their utility subsidiaries.
