Download or read book God Ghosts and Grannies written by Shirley Booth-Byerly and published by Abbott Press. This book was released on 2018-10-11 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shirley Booth-Byerly has been addicted to the study of genealogy since childhood; she loves the never-ending battle of discovering subtle links, possibilities, impossibilities, and misconceptions. In God, Ghosts, and Grannies, she tells the story of her family—where they came from and how they settled in South Alabama and Northwest Florida. Telling the events as literary nonfiction and taking genealogy to a new level, her story shares insights from six generations, six unique individuals, each viewing life from slightly skewed, rose-colored glasses. Shirley melds humor, drama, and a living experience with research, resources, and revelations. Gods, Ghosts, and Grannies narrates a story of people’s lives, their hopes, their dreams, and the realities they faced while struggling, working, and tending their homes; the same homes that convey tranquil memories, laughter, sunshine, and contentment—memories forever gone when no one is left to tell the stories or no one cares to listen.
Download or read book A History of Kershaw County South Carolina written by Joan A. Inabinet and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2022-10-18 with total page 735 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of Kershaw County is a much anticipated comprehensive narrative describing a South Carolina community rooted in strong local traditions. From prehistoric to present times, the history spans Native American dwellers (including Cofitachiqui mound builders), through the county's major roles in the American Revolution and Civil War, to the commercial and industrial innovations of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Joan and Glen Inabinet share insightful tales of the region's inhabitants through defining historical moments as well as transformative local changes in agriculture and industry, transportation and tourism, education and community development. Kershaw County is home to some of South Carolina's most notable prehistoric sites as well as the state's oldest inland city, Camden, thus giving the region an impressive and richly textured human history. Still the most familiar icon of the county is an early weathervane silhouette honoring the Catawba Indian chief King Hagler for protecting pioneer settlers. An important colonial milling and trading center, Camden was seized by the British under Lord Cornwallis during the American Revolution and fortified as their backcountry headquarters. Eight battles and skirmishes were fought within the modern boundaries of Kershaw County, including the Battle of Camden on August 16, 1780, and the Battle of Hobkirk's Hill on April 25, 1781. Named for Revolutionary War patriot Joseph Kershaw, the county was created in 1791 from portions of Claremont, Fairfield, Lancaster, and Richland counties. Kershaw County developed its local economy through plantation agriculture, an enterprise dependent on African slave labor. Distinctive homes were built on rural plantations and in Camden, and a village of well-to-do planters grew up at Liberty Hill. Six Confederate generals claimed the county as their birthplace, and the area also was home to Mary Boykin Chesnut, acclaimed diarist of the Civil War. In their descriptions of Kershaw County in modern times, the Inabinets chronicle how the railroad and later U.S. Highway 1 brought opportunities for the expansion of tourism and led to Camden's development as a popular winter resort for wealthy northerners. Small towns and villages emerged from railroad stops, including Bethune, Blaney (later Elgin), Boykin, Cassatt, Kershaw, Lugoff, and Westville. The influx of new money coupled with local equestrian traditions led to an enthusiasm for polo and the creation of the Carolina Cup steeplechase at the Springdale Course. Aside from early developments in textile manufacturing, industrialization proceeded slowly in Kershaw County. The completion of the Wateree Dam in 1919 gave the region a valuable source of electricity as well as much-needed flood control and a popular new recreational area in Lake Wateree. Despite these incentives for new industry, agricultural ways of life continued to dominate until World War II influenced advances in aviation, communication, and industrialization. In describing these changes, the Inabinets map the circumstances surrounding the building of the DuPont plant which opened in 1950 and the expansion of several other industries in the area. Through perceptive text and more than eighty images, this first book-length history of Kershaw County illustrates how the region is steeped in a rich history of more than two centuries of struggles and accomplishments in which preserving lessons of the past holds equal sway with welcoming opportunities for the future.

Download or read book Up the Creek Without a Tadpole written by Gillian Griffith and published by Mereo Books, mereobook, mereobooks. This book was released on 2015-01-26 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ÿ The letters Gillian Griffith wrote to her elderly, demented mother were never intended to be read - they were simply Gillian?s way of dealing with her own anger and guilt towards her high-handed, infuriating and impossibly challenging mother. To Gillian?s own surprise, ?as the words bounced back at me off the page, magic happened?. The letters began to morph into a book, and the writing of it gradually released Gillian from her mother?s influence. The result is a powerful, touching, uplifting and often very funny account of one woman?s emotional and practical battle with the chaos caused by dementia. This book (the title comes from a small piece of nonsense spoken by Gillian?s mother) brings a new insight into the effects of dementia on those caught up in it. It will make a valuable and original contribution to the debate on dementia care.

Book excerpt: During the summer of 1974, fourteen-year-old Chuck Moretti works in his father's funeral home in a small eastern Kentucky mining town. He finds himself in situations that few adults could handle, encountering life-and-death events, exhilarating emergencies, and profound tragedies in the family business. But Chuck also yearns for resolution of his own adolescent issues and longs for his mother who died six years ago. Confused by his father's seeming lack of emotion as he carries out his funeral director's duties, Chuck frequently seeks solace and advice from Bart, an effeminate waiter at the ill-reputed Blistered Cat, a honky-tonk cafi across the street from the funeral home. In between hair-raising ambulance rides and fulfilling the most morbid duties of a mortician's assistant, Chuck wants to remain a teenager. He strives to maintain his bond with his best friend, Andy, and to develop his first romantic relationship with Molly Sue, a local preacher's daughter. He longs for the thrills of teenage antics, yet finds them somehow unsatisfying. Throughout the summer, Chuck draws on a spiritual connection he has formed with his mother and looks to her for answers he can't get from anyone else. In the end, he learns to listen to-and trust-the answers that come from heaven.

Download or read book Up the Creek with a Paddle written by Mary Boyle Bradley and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2009-02-20 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story is simple. It is about love, life and hope. The love story begins in a small pub in Galway during the summer of 1991. Then, elusive, sporadic symptoms consistent with Multiple Sclerosis emerge. After marriage and years of denial, Mary details her battle with the onslaught of her husband's Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis. Finally, Mary stumbles on a little known doctor in New York City, Dr. Bernard Bihari. Many people were making very bold claims about his work on the internet. They claimed that Dr. Bihari knew how to stop every type of MS from progressing. Even better, it was claimed that he could help everyone with an autoimmune disorder, ranging from psoriasis to AIDS. It was claimed that Dr. Bihari could help them with Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN). Eventually, Mary's husband took a leap of faith and put Dr. Bihari's work to the test. LDN worked. It stopped his MS from progressing. Since September 2002, a worldwide campaign has ignited with passionate momentum to get the already FDA-approved drug medically recognized as a treatment for MS and all autoimmune disorders. After witnessing her husband's release from the onslaught of a progressive degenerative disease, Mary tells how she approached celebrities ranging from Pat Kenny to Oprah, politicians from Thabo Mbeki to Bertie Ahern, and every form of media, in an effort to be heard. LDN is a cheap, generic drug with no known side-effects. Despite the lack of financial incentive for Pharmaceutical companies, the ambition is for LDN to hit the masses and improve the lives of millions. Every veteran of an autoimmune disease knows that existing medications for MS and all autoimmune disorders are costly and ineffective. They line the pockets of the drug companies, but do not help the people. Mary directly challenges Governments across the globe and every MS society in existence using published scientific papers, the backing of many reputable doctors and thousands of patients testimonies. Since 2002, LDN communities have emerged all over the internet, in every language. From Facebook to YouTube, people are screaming for their success stories to be heard. This is an exciting time for the LDN community and everyone who suffers from an autoimmune disorder. Small scale LDN clinical trials are finally making progress around the world and are paving the way for a much needed large scale double blind placebo study. The story is personal and easy to read. It is educational, enlightening and entertaining with plenty of humor to balance the pain. It is a story that needs to be heard. Every single person knows somebody who needs LDN yesterday. LDN is, without question, the biggest medical discovery since penicillin. Mary successfully humanizes the implications of a cheap, generic drug and the complexities of getting a simple treatment with no patent (and hence no financial incentive) to people who need it as much as she did.

Download or read book Off Our Rockers and Into Trouble written by Alison Acker and published by TouchWood Editions. This book was released on 2004 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Raging Grannies sprang up in 1987 in Victoria, B.C., they didn't realise they would be starting a worldwide movement. But that is what happened. They just wanted to protest, but in a different way. And they do. Their weapons? Satire and song. Wearing outrageous hats and warbling witty lyrics, they poke fun at the powerful people who are wreaking havoc with their grandchildren's world. But in spite of their lighthearted approach, their purpose is extremely serious. The Grannies have challenged nuclear-armed ships, forestry companies, arms manufacturers, multinational corporations, pharmaceutical giants, manufacturers of war toys, the World Trade Organization, and every level of government, from municipal councils to the American presidency. For their messages of peace and justice, Grannies have been arrested, jailed, pepper-sprayed and even hosed by the U.S. navy. They have also been praised by Ralph Nader, Peter Gzowski, David Suzuki and Pete Seeger, invited to perform far and wide, and hailed as role models. This is an amusing book, showing how groups of older women around the world take on the powers that be, win the occasional battle, and have a wonderful time doing it
