Book excerpt: Excerpt from Home Reminiscences of John Randolph, of Roanoke, Vol. 1 Since my task was begun, many of my contributors have departed this life; and it is fortunate that their testimony de bene esse was taken; otherwise the world might never have known what sort of man John Randolph of Roanoke really was. The original manuscripts which go in part to make up this volume, constitute a precious bundle, which I shall preserve with "miser care," as memorials of dear friends of the olden time. Great pains has been taken to gather fresh materials; but, while gathering fresh materials, I have brought the works of others into requisition. Frequent quotations have been made from Sawyer, Garland, Baldwin, Benton and Sparks. If possibly a valuable book has been written, it is owing to the highly interesting and original contributions which have been kindly furnished me, and to the choice extracts from other sources. I claim no credit save that which attaches to the laborious bee, gathering its precious freight, here a little and there a little, from every blooming flower. I am glad to be able to furnish the reader with a good likeness of Mr. Randolph. The engraving is taken from a portrait presented by a citizen of Philadelphia to the State of Virginia, which several old persons, who were acquainted with Mr. Randolph, have assured me is an excellent likeness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of John Randolph of Roanoke, Vol. 1 The author of this book has had, perhaps, as good an opportunity as any other man, who was not a contemporary and intimate friend, to form a just estimate of Mr. Randolph's character, and also to collect valuable and copious materials for his biography. He was educated in Mr. Randolph's district, was familiar with all the local associations of that devoted son of the Old Dominion, often saw him among his beloved constituents, and heard him under most favorable circumstances both on the hustings and in the Virginia Convention. The writer was then but a youth, full of all the eager interest and curiosity that would naturally be excited by so extraordinary a man. Since Mr. Randolph's death, it has been his good fortune to have been thrown into the circle of his most intimate and confidential friends, some of whom the writer feels justified in saying he also may claim as his friends. While the thought of writing a life of Mr. Randolph is of recent date, the character of the man and the incidents of his life have been for many years the subject of interest and of inquiry, which were abundantly gratified by those who knew him and delighted to discourse on the peculiarities and eccentricities of their departed friend. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of John Randolph of Roanoke, Vol. 2 We have now to view Mr. Randolph in a new aspect. After an active, uninterrupted, and eventful career of fourteen years in the public service, in one of the most remarkable epochs of human history, we have now to follow him into retirement. The triumph of his enemies at the recent election had no power to shake the firmness of his purpose, or to disturb the serenity of his mind. "It relieves me from an odious thraldom," says he, "and, I assure you, my dear sir, I have thought and yet think, much more of the charming Mrs. G. than of the election. The low and base arts to which my adversaries have resorted, have not raised them or sunk me in my own estimation." At home he lived in the utmost seclusion and solitude. Up to 1810 he made Bizarre his principal place of residence. Here he enjoyed the best of female society, for which no man had a higher relish - found employment in the education of his young nephews, the future heirs of his name and fortune, and on whom he doted with the fondness of a father; and solace for his leisure hours in a large miscellaneous library, and the society and conversation of old neighbors and well-tried friends. In 1810 he removed to Roanoke, his estate in Charlotte county, on the Roanoke river, some thirty-five or forty miles south of Bizarre; "a savage solitude," says he, "into which I have been driven to seek shelter." Shortly before the recent election, on Sunday, March 21, 1813, the house at Bizarre took fire - the family were at church - very little saved. "I lost," says he, "a valuable collection of books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Randolph of Roanoke, 1773-1833: A Biography Based Largely on New Material The biography (so-called) of Randolph by Lemuel Sawyer is but a mere memoir; though by no means negligible, because Sawyer served for many years in the House of Representatives with Randolph, and, while sharing the prejudice against him, felt by all the fervid Jeffersonians, after the breach between him and Jefferson, was an ardent but not an indiscriminate admirer of Randolph's genius; and was an admirer, in many respects, of his character too. But, even if Sawyer's book were a much more extensive one, he had a failing which is enough to destroy, or all but destroy, the value of any book, brief or otherwise; that is, gross inaccuracy. He was, we are told by John Quincy Adams, a writer of poems and plays, as well as a Congressman, and no playwright or poet ever deliberately took more license with historical facts than Sawyer did in the loose statements of his memoir. The Reminiscences of the Home Life of John Randolph of Roanoke by Powhatan Bouldin contains much contemporary testimony about Randolph of the highest importance, but, as its title indicates, its scope is limited.
