Some key points highlighted include the fact that the number of international arrivals from outside the Common Travel Area continued to rise, and was 89 million in 2000, 2.3 million more than in 1999 with 13 million non-European Economic Area nationals. Asylum applications, excluding dependents, rose 13% in 2000 to 80,315, with the highest number of applications from Iraqi, Sri Lankan, Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Iranian and Afghan nationals. Acceptances for settlement in 2000 increased by 55,000 to 125,000 since 1998. The total number of persons removed from the UK in 2000 was 46,600, an increase of almost 25% on figures for 1999.

Findings for 2005 include: i) the estimated number of international arrivals from outside the Common Travel Area rose by five per cent to 101.9 million with 11.8 million non-EEA nationals, a two per cent fall on 2004; ii) asylum applications, excluding dependants, fell by 24 per cent to 25,710, with the highest number of applications from nationals of Iran, Somalia, Eritrea, China and Afghanistan; and iii) asylum removals (including assisted returns and some voluntary departures) rose by 9 per cent to 13,730, excluding dependents.
