Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Structure Report: Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt, National Historic Site, Hyde Park, New York The Home of Franklin Delano Roosevelt (fdr) is interpreted to the year 1945. The rationale for this date was provided by fdr himself. He began plans in the late 1930's to donate his home to the federal government as a National Historic Site (nhs). His wishes included that nothing be altered once the property changed hands. As it happened, fdr died in the spring of 1945, at which time the members of his family gave up their rights of ownership. Research for this historic structure report (hsr) on the Home of fdr was begun by the author in October 1983, but was ended in December of that year in order to address and complete work directed by the Office of the President of the United States. Research and physical investigation recommenced in October 1986, and continued sporadically until completion in January 1989. Although only nondestructive types of investigation were permitted, many available technical means were employed to study the house's architectural fabric and to analyze it comparatively. Several aspects of terminology in this report need explanation. Room names and numbers are those instituted when the house was restored following the 1982 fire; they differ in some respects from the room names seen on the 1941 Historic American Building Survey drawings (appendix B). Also, a number of abbreviations are used throughout the report. Members of the Roosevelt family, after their first citation in the text, are referenced subsequently by their first names. Likewise, after their initial citation in the footnotes, Roosevelt family members are referenced by their initials. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The April 1945 journey of FDR's funeral train became a thousand-mile odyssey, fraught with heartbreak and scandal. As it passed through the night, few of the grieving onlookers gave thought to what might be happening behind the Pullman shades, where women whispered and men tossed back highballs. Inside was a Soviet spy, a newly widowed Eleanor Roosevelt, who had just discovered that her husband's mistress was in the room with him when he died, all the Supreme Court justices, and incoming president Harry S. Truman who was scrambling to learn secrets FDR had never shared with him. Weaving together information from long-forgotten diaries and declassified Secret Service documents, journalist and historian Robert Klara enters the private world on board that famous train. He chronicles the three days during which the country grieved and despaired as never before, and a new president hammered out the policies that would galvanize a country in mourning and win the Second World War.

Book excerpt: "I think Eleanor Roosevelt has so gripped the imagination of this moment because we need her and her vision so completely. . . . She's perfect for us as we enter the twenty-first century. Eleanor Roosevelt is a loud and profound voice for people who want to change the world." -- Blanche Wiesen Cook Named "Woman of the Century" in a survey conducted by the National Women's Hall of Fame, Eleanor Roosevelt wrote her hugely popular syndicated column "My Day" for over a quarter of that century, from 1936 to 1962. This collection brings together for the first time in a single volume the most memorable of those columns, written with singular wit, elegance, compassion, and insight -- everything from her personal perspectives on the New Deal and World War II to the painstaking diplomacy required of her as chair of the United Nations Committee on Human Rights after the war to the joys of gardening at her beloved Hyde Park home. To quote Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., "What a remarkable woman she was! These sprightly and touching selections from Eleanor Roosevelt's famous column evoke an extraordinary personality." "My Day reminds us how great a woman she was." --Atlanta Journal-Constitution
