Book American Home Landscapes

Download or read book American Home Landscapes written by Denise Wiles Adams and published by Timber Press. This book was released on 2013-05-07 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there’s no shortage of information on restoring and maintaining the historical integrity of period homes, until now there has been no authoritative reference that provides comparable information for landscapes. American Home Landscapes is a comprehensive, fully illustrated guide to recreating nearly 400 years of historical landscape design and adapting them to modern needs. You will first learn how to research design elements for a particular property. Each of the following chapters focuses on the design characteristics of six well-defined historical periods, beginning with the Colonial period and ending with the last decades of the twentieth century. Each section features the most prominent landscape features of each era, such as paths, driveways, fences, hedges, seating, and accessories. Extensive bibliographic resources and historically accurate plant lists round out the text. Whether the goal is to create a meticulously accurate period landscape or simply to evoke the look of a bygone era, you’ll find the tools you need in American Home Landscapes.

Book Courbet and the Modern Landscape

Download or read book Courbet and the Modern Landscape written by and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2006 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its fittingly dramatic design, Courbet and the Modern Landscape accompanies the first major museum exhibition specifically to address Gustave Courbet's extraordinary achievement in landscape painting. Many of these carefully selected works produced from 1855 to 1876--gathered from Asia, Europe, and North America--will be new to readers. The catalogue--which accompanies an exhibition at the Getty Museum to be held from February 21 to May 14, 2006--highlights the artist's expressive responses to the natural environment. Essays by the curators examine Courbet's distinctly modern practice of landscape painting. Mary Morton's essay situates his landscapes in relation to his work in other genres, his critical reputation, and his role in establishing a new pictorial language for landscape painting. Charlotte Eyerman's essay investigates how later generations of nineteenth- and twentieth-century artists responded to Courbet's example. The catalogue also includes an essay by Dominique de Font-Reaulx, curator of photographs at the Musee d'Orsay, on the relationship between Courbet's work and landscape photography of the 1850s and 1860s. Book Architecture and Landscape of the Pennsylvania Germans 1720 1920

Download or read book Architecture and Landscape of the Pennsylvania Germans 1720 1920 written by Sally McMurry and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2011-03-08 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phrase "Pennsylvania German architecture" likely conjures images of either the "continental" three-room house with its huge hearth and five-plate stoves, or the huge Pennsylvania bank barn with its projecting overshoot. These and other trademarks of Pennsylvania German architecture have prompted great interest among a wide audience, from tourists and genealogists to architectural historians, antiquarians, and folklorists. Since the nineteenth century, scholars have engaged in field measurement and drawing, photographic documentation, and careful observation, resulting in a scholarly conversation about Pennsylvania German building traditions. What cultural patterns were being expressed in these buildings? How did shifting social, technological, and economic forces shape architectural changes? Since those early forays, our understanding has moved well beyond the three-room house and the forebay barn. In Architecture and Landscape of the Pennsylvania Germans, 1720-1920, eight essays by leading scholars and preservation professionals not only describe important architectural sites but also offer original interpretive insights that will help advance understanding of Pennsylvania German culture and history. Pennsylvania Germans' lives are traced through their houses, barns, outbuildings, commercial buildings, churches, and landscapes. The essays bring to bear years of field observation as well as engagement with current scholarly perspectives on issues such as the nature of "ethnicity," the social construction of landscape, and recent historiography about the Pennsylvania Germans. Dozens of original measured drawings, appearing here for the first time in print, document important works of Pennsylvania German architecture, including the iconic Bertolet barns in Berks County, the Martin Brandt farm complex in Cumberland County, a nineteenth-century Pennsylvania German housemill, and urban houses in Lancaster.

Book Landscapes of Housing

Download or read book Landscapes of Housing written by Jeanne Haffner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-29 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twenty-first century, housing has become a site of ecological experimentation and environmental remediation. From the vantage point of contemporary architecture, conservation concerns and emergent building science technologies support one another, with new processes and materials deployed to reduce energy usage, water consumption, and carbon dioxide emissions. Landscapes of Housing examines this trend in historical perspective, arguing for a more considered environmental vision that includes the organic, social, and cultural dimensions of landscape. By shifting the focus from architecture, the book highlights and critiques the relationship between dwelling and landscape itself. Contributors from a wide range of international perspectives propose a more integrative ecology that includes history, culture, society, and materiality, in addition to technology, within contemporary ecological housing programs. This book will be a resource for upper-level students, academics, and researchers in landscape architecture interested in the social and political implications of ecological housing.
