Book excerpt: ""The Maluhia Project: home health for the uninsured" is one of five demonstration projects funded by Congress through the Bureau of Health Care Delivery and Assistance and by the State of Hawaii through the Department of Health. The program began in 1989 and by September 30, 1991 had provided 241 persons with skilled home health services and case management, with an active patient census of 165. Target population for the program are individuals who have no health insurance or who have exhausted their home health benefits, and who are at risk for hospitalization or nursing home placement. The project currently serves the islands of Oahu and Hawaii. The project is a Medicare certified home health agency, and the staff of community health nurses, medical social worker and home health aides provide services to clients in the vicinity of the project offices at Maluhia Long Term Care Health Center in west Honolulu. Clients in other areas of Oahu and on Hawaii are served through contract with other home health agencies" -- Executive summary.
