Book Robert Browning Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Robert Browning This mystery of the unconscious man, far deeper than any mystery of the conscious one, existing as it does in all men, existed peculiarly in Browning, because he was a very ordinary and spontaneous man. The same thing exists to some extent in all history and all affairs. Anything that is deliberate, twisted, createdciples of the Rosicrucians than the principles of the United States: nor has any secret society kept its aims so quiet as humanity. The way to be inexplicable is to be chaotic, and on the surface this was the quality of Browning's life; there is the same difference between judging of his poetry and judging of his life, that there is between making a map of a labyrinth and making a map of a mist. The discussion of what some par ticular allusion in Sordello means has gone on so far, and may go on still, but it has it in its nature to end. The life of Robert Browning, who combines the greatest brain with the most simple temperament known in our annals, would go on for ever if we did not decide to summarise it in a very brief and simple narrative. Robert Browning was born in Camberwell on May 7th, 1812. His father and grandfather had been clerks in the Bank of England, and his whole family would appear to have belonged to the solid and educated middle class - the class which is interested in letters, but not ambitious in them, the class to which poetry is a luxury, but not a necessity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Masters: Browning and Turgenief Of the two papers which make up this little volume the first was written to commemorate the centennial of Robert Browning's birth. It is the result, not so much of minute and critical study of the poet's work in detail, as of long and intimate communion with the poet's mind and heart as these are expressed in his verse. Yet the exercise of the critical faculty has not been neglected, as I trust the following pages will show. My endeavor has been to give as complete a survey as my limited space would allow of Browning's literary career and achieve ment. It is my modest hope that this paper will be an inspiration and help to those who as yet are unacquainted, except in a very super ficial way, with Browning's poems. It may also aid in correcting those grotesque misappre hensions of his work which have hindered many from entering into possession of the riches of color, thought, emotion, hope and dauntless f aith which the poet offers to readers who take him on his own terms. This book was released on 2017-05-20 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Robert Browning in His Relation to the Art of Painting: Read at the Twenty-Eighth Meeting of the Browning Society of Boston, March 26, 1889 To-day, it is of one only of the arts that I wish to say a few words. To-day, I have the pleasure of speaking, to the Society which represents him in Boston, of Robert Brown ing in his relation to the Art of Painting, that we may see, so far as may be in the very limited scope of this paper, how deeply, how wisely, and how justly this Poet deals with the Painter. I shall have no word to say of Browning's own art: it does not come within my province to speak of his verse as such, only as it relates itself to my subject, as it ex plains or illuminates pictures and those who painted them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Robert Browning as a Religious Teacher: Being the Burney Essay for 1900 The following Essay secured the Burney Prize for the year 1900 at Cambridge University and is now published in compliance with the conditions of the Prize. While preparing it for the Press, I have introduced a number of changes in language and arrangement, especially in the discussion of Browning's theory of knowledge; have increased the length of the last two chapters by the addition of some new matter; and have been led, by the criticisms of friends and by further reflection, to modify my view of the poet's attitude towards Christianity and to rewrite the chapter dealing with that subject. I have made no attempt to distinguish Browning's religion from his philosophy, but have interpreted the phrase 'religious teacher' in the widest possible sense. Book Browning s Women Classic Reprint

Download or read book Browning s Women Classic Reprint written by Mary E. Burt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Browning's Women This book is written for the one who is too busy to devote sufficient time to the study of Browning's works to get at the poet's meaning. In it I have endeavored to simplify some of his complexities, ta supply a few of the missing links, and ta make some of his ethical lessons so plain that the one who has not constant access to a reference library, and who can not boast a college education, may easily get a breath of the atmosphere which the poet has created for us. Knowing the utter impossibility of expressing his thoughts in any different language from his, I have aimed as far as possible to use the poet's own words, either in paraphrase or by direct quotation, without the too frequent use of quotation marks; if the reader will supply these for himself, he will find his book liberally dotted.
