Book excerpt: Why Did She Cry is the captivating and spiritually lifting true story of the weeping Madonna. During the1960 Lenten period, in the home of Pagona Catsounis of Island Park, New York, a divine sign was manifest. While praying before the icon of the Holy Mother St. Mary, she literally froze as she saw a tear welling on the eye of the lithograph print. Mrs. Catsounis immediately called Father George Papadeas, parish priest of St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church. Faithful of all denominations made the pilgrimage to St. Paul's for a chance to see and venerate the Icon. Over thirty years later, Newsday proclaimed the weeping Madonna at St. Paul's as one of the most memorable events of the past fifty years.

Book Festa Paschalia

    Book Details:
  • Author : Philip J. Goddard
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2011
  • ISBN : 9780852447642
  • Pages : 339 pages

Download or read book Festa Paschalia written by Philip J. Goddard and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first comprehensive history in English for eighty years of the origins and development of the Holy Week liturgy in the Roman Rite. Describing how the first apostles and disciples, and their immediate successors, came during the years following 33 AD to celebrate an annual feast of the Resurrection, and the form which this first-century celebration took, it goes on to explain in detail how the ceremonies with which we are familiar today began in fourth-century Jerusalem. These ceremonies were then elaborated and developed during the early and late Middle Ages in Western Europe, particularly in the Frankish kingdom, and at Rome itself, down to the Tridentine reform of the 16th century, a reform which endured for some four hundred years with very little change. Looking at the two significant 20th century reforms of the rites, that of 1955 and that of 1970, Philip J Goddard then explains the various changes which were made, the sources from which innovations were introduced, and the reasons for the introduction of those changes and innovations, as given (so far as possible) by those involved in making them. While accessible to the ordinary reader with no particular knowledge of liturgical history, this study will be if great interest to liturgical specialists and scholars, to those in seminaries and religious orders or to clergy interested in the history of the Roman liturgy. Comprehensive notes give full references to both primary and secondary sources. Philip J Goddard is a graduate of the University of Oxford, and has had an interest in liturgical matters for many years. He is the author of 'The Plain Man's Guide to the Traditional Roman Rite of Holy Mass', and contributes articles and book reviews to the magazine 'Mass of Ages'.

Pastors and worship leaders need to approach these days with special care so that their significance is not lost on the gathered congregation. How does one mark familiar days such as Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday in such a way that a deadening sameness does not overtake the planning and the execution of the worship services for these days? James M. Bloom provides in this helpful resource eleven separate services or worship ideas. Liturgies and meditations are included. In most cases more than one worship alternative is provided. Use this volume to enrich your observance of the special season of Lent. Share its ideas with others on your worship planning team. Help the members of your parish to experience a blessed Lent. James M. Bloom is pastor of Beechwood United Methodist Church, Alliance, Ohio. Previous CSS publications by James Bloom include Caterpillars, Cocoons and Butterflies and A Festival of Lights.

He also provides helpful ideas for how the often complex liturgies of these seasons can be done simply and well by small congregations. Based on the liturgies of The Book of Common Prayer and the latest edition of The Book of Occasional Services, this ceremonial guide also draws on the paschal liturgies of other Anglican traditions, including those in Canada's Book of Alternative Services.
