Book The Holy Spirit Movement in Korea

Download or read book The Holy Spirit Movement in Korea written by Young-hoon Lee and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the historical and doctrinal development of the Holy Spirit Movement in Korea through five successive periods, from 1900 to the present. The first period (1900-20) was characterised by repentance and revival, the second period (1920-40) by persecution and suffering under Japanese occupation. The third period (1940-60) was a time of confusion and division, while the fourth period (1960-80) was a time of explosive revival in which the Pentecostal movement played a major role in the rapid growth of Korean churches. In the fifth period (1980 to the present), the Holy Spirit Movement reaches out to all denominations. The book also discusses the relationship between this movement and other religions, such as shamanism, and looks forward to further engagement with issues of concern in the larger society.

Book The Korean Pentecost and the Sufferings which Followed

Download or read book The Korean Pentecost and the Sufferings which Followed written by William Newton Blair and published by Banner of Truth. This book was released on 1977 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1977 the Trust published this remarkable account of the first 60 years or so of the modern church in Korea (mainly North Korea). William Blair (1876- 1970), in his first term of missionary service, was at the centre of the great revival of 1907, and his account of this and the events leading up to it forms the first part of the book. Blair includes a thrilling description of how the gospel first came to Korea. The account is then taken up by his son-in-law, Bruce Hunt (1903- 92) born in Pyengyang, now the capital of North Korea who shows how the revival was followed by a baptism of suffering under the Japanese and Communists. During his forty-eight years of missionary service in Korea, Hunt personally knew many of the Korean Christian martyrs. This new edition of The Korean Pentecost has been completely re-typeset, and includes twelve additional illustrations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the extraordinary growth of Christianity in the global south has come the rise of "reverse missions," in which countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America send missionaries to re-evangelize the West. In The Spirit Moves West, Rebecca Kim uses South Korea as a case study of how non-Western missionaries target Americans, particularly white Americans. She draws on four years of interviews, participant observation, and surveys of South Korea's largest non-denominational missionary-sending agency, University Bible Fellowship, in order to provide an inside look at this growing phenomenon. Known as the "Asian Protestant Superpower," South Korea is second only to the United States in the number of missionaries it sends abroad: approximately 22,000 in over 160 countries. Conducting her research both in the US and in South Korea, Kim studies the motivations and methods of these Korean evangelicals who have, since the 1970s, sought to "bring the gospel back" to America. By offering the first empirically-grounded examination of this much-discussed phenomenon, Kim explores what non-Western missions will mean to the future of Christianity in America and around the world.

Book When the Spirit s Fire Swept Korea

Download or read book When the Spirit s Fire Swept Korea written by Jonathan Goforth and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-06-06 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MY BELOVED MOTHER, Mrs. Jonathan Goforth, would have been writing this introductory word, but last May 31, at three A.M., at the age of seventy-eight, she laid down her pen which had been so signally used by the guiding hand of God. Like the husband whose life and work she shared with such heroic devotion through nearly fifty years in China, Mother was spared any long illness and suffering, passing suddenly into the "gloryland." Her face lit up with expectation, and her last words rang with confidence: "This is the summons from my King. I am ready to go! " And now, being dead, they are both yet speaking to our hearts through their writings. By My Spirit, the one book Father wrote alone, has been recently reprinted by the Zondervan Publishing House because they are convinced that its message on revival is a most timely and urgently needed one. This little booklet, in which Father tells the story of the Korean Revival as he lived through it, is considered a fitting companion publication to By My Spirit. In rereading this, the message has, I must confess, searched, then scorched, my own soul. We of this generation may well ask ourselves, as he does: "Do we really believe in God the Holy Ghost?" Even in these days of unprecedented world catastrophe the Church of Jesus Christ is shamefully neglecting the powerhouse of prayer, and putting faith in the might of men and armaments, instead of giving the Holy Spirit of God His rightful place of sovereign power. May He use this story of the great revival fire that swept Korea to awaken our Laodicean Church to the stark fact that victory and eternal salvation will come "not by [man] might, nor by [man] power,"-as Father often (quoted his favorite text-"but BY MY SPIRIT, saith the Lord of hosts." Download or read book A Theology of Hope written by Sang Yun Lee and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-01-03 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lee advocates a “theology of hope,” essentially different from the Moltmann version on which the idea is developed. Lee shows how Cho’s message, particularly in its promise of a “saved” healthy, happy and prosperous life (the “Threefold Blessing”), was the antidote to the events that had ravaged the Korean peninsula in the 1950s. At the same time, Asian Pentecostal scholars might also need a greater appreciation for both the diversity and richness of their cultural and religious past. . . . [They] have found both culturally and biblically acceptable alternatives to, and adaptations from, the practices of their ancient religions and are seeking to provide answers to the needs of their own context. —Allan H. Anderson, University of Birmingham, England (From the Foreword)

Download or read book Christianity in Korea written by Robert E. Buswell, Jr. and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2007-05-31 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the significance of Korea in world Christianity and the crucial role Christianity plays in contemporary Korean religious life, the tradition has been little studied in the West. Christianity in Korea seeks to fill this lacuna by providing a wide-ranging overview of the growth and development of Korean Christianity and the implications that development has had for Korean politics, interreligious dialogue, and gender and social issues. The volume begins with an accessibly written overview that traces in broad outline the history and development of Christianity on the peninsula. This is followed by chapters on broad themes, such as the survival of early Korean Catholics in a Neo-Confucian society, relations between Christian churches and colonial authorities during the Japanese occupation, premillennialism, and the theological significance of the division and prospective reunification of Korea. Others look in more detail at individuals and movements, including the story of the female martyr Kollumba Kang Wansuk; the influence of Presbyterianism on the renowned nationalist Ahn Changho; the sociopolitical and theological background of the Minjung Protestant Movement; and the success and challenges of Evangelical Protestantism in Korea. The book concludes with a discussion of how best to encourage a rapprochement between Buddhism and Christianity in Korea.

Book Worship in the Presbyterian Church in Korea

Download or read book Worship in the Presbyterian Church in Korea written by Seong-Won Park and published by Peter Lang Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Korean Protestant church has made an astonishing growth in the relatively short period for over a hundred years of mission history. No doubt, worship has made a major contribution to this increase. To what extent and in what sense can the worship of the Korean Presbyterian church be called Reformed? To what extent was it deformed or reformed? What kind of continuity or discontinuity has the Korean Presbyterian worship with the 16th century Geneva worship and with the historical development of Reformed worship? What would all these developments mean in terms of Reformed ethos of worship? The author tried to answer these questions through a study on history of worship in the Presbyterian Church in Korea. The answer the author found is that the Korean Presbyterian becomes more Korean by becoming more Reformed and more Reformed by becoming more Korean.

Book Holiness and Pentecostal Movements

Download or read book Holiness and Pentecostal Movements written by David Bundy and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2022-03-04 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1830s, Holiness and Pentecostal movements have had a significant influence on many Christian churches, and they have been a central force in producing what is known today as World Christianity. This book demonstrates the advantages of analyzing them in relation to one another. The Salvation Army, the Church of the Nazarene, the Wesleyan Church, and the Free Methodist Church identify strongly with the Holiness Movement. The Assemblies of God and the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World identify just as strongly with the Pentecostal Movement. Complicating matters, denominations such as the Church of God (Cleveland), the International Holiness Pentecostal Church, and the Church of God in Christ have harmonized Holiness and Pentecostalism. This book, the first in the new series Studies in the Holiness and Pentecostal Movements, examines these complex relationships in a multidisciplinary fashion. Building on previous scholarship, the contributors provide new ways of understanding the relationships, influences, and circulation of ideas among these movements in the United States, the United Kingdom, India, and Southeast and East Asia. In addition to the editors, the contributors are Kimberly Ervin Alexander, Insik Choi, Robert A. Danielson, Chris E. W. Green, Henry H. Knight III, Frank D. Macchia, Luther Oconer, Cheryl J. Sanders, and Daniel Woods.

Book Understanding Burnout Recovery Among Native Born Korean Missionaries

Download or read book Understanding Burnout Recovery Among Native Born Korean Missionaries written by Hannah Kyong-Jin Cho and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-01-29 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this timely book, Cho provides mission scholars, sending churches, and mission agencies with an understanding of Korean missionaries' burnout recovery process. Her study of Korean missionary burnout recovery included thirty-nine research participants who had experienced burnout in missionary service and who subsequently recovered. Participants reported a variety of physical, emotional, and spiritual symptoms, as well as relational difficulties experienced during burnout. Cho describes how their self-help approach, characterized by independent, religious self-effort, brought only temporary relief. Through self-care, however, they experienced genuine recovery. Self-care that leads to lasting recovery is holistic and grace-based, characterized by a correct understanding of the roles of God and others in their lives and engagement in authentic community for interdependent care. This study also gives insightful recommendations to missionary member care systems, mission agencies, and other sending organizations in an Asian cultural context about how to care for Korean missionaries. It is also intended for counselors of home churches so that they can provide better member care for burned-out missionaries. Lastly, this study advances research into contextually appropriate paradigms and strategies helpful to cross-cultural missionaries in the area of both Korean missionaries and non-Western studies in missionary member care.

Book Alice Lakwena and the Holy Spirits

Download or read book Alice Lakwena and the Holy Spirits written by Heike Behrend and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2000-03-31 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August 1986, Alice Auma, a young Acholi woman in northern Uganda, proclaiming herself under the orders of a Christian spirit named Lakwena, raised an army called the “Holy Spirit Mobile Forces.” With it she waged a war against perceived evil, not only an external enemy represented by the National Resistance Army of the government, but internal enemies in the form of “impure” soldiers, witches, and sorcerers. She came very close to her goal of overthrowing the government but was defeated and fled to Kenya. This book provides a unique view of Alice’s movement, based on interviews with its members and including their own writings, examining their perceptions of the threat of external and internal evil. It concludes with an account of the successor movements into which Alice’s forces fragmented and which still are active in the civil wars of the Sudan and Uganda.
