Book In Search of Ulster Scots Land

Download or read book In Search of Ulster Scots Land written by Barry Vann and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social and religious historians have conducted much research on Scottish colonial migrations to Ulster; however, there remains historical debate as to whether the Irish Sea in the seventeenth century was an intervening obstacle or a transportation artery. Vann presents a geographical perspective on the topic, showing that most population flows involving southwest Scotland during the first half of the seventeenth century were directed across the Irish Sea via centuries-old sea routes that had allowed for the formation of evolving cultural areas. As political or religious motivational factors presented themselves in the last half of that century, Vann holds, the established social and familial links stretched along those sea routes facilitated chain migration that led to the birth of a Protestant Ulster-Scots community. Vann also shows how this community constituted itself along religious and institutional rubrics of dissent from the Church of England, Church of Scotland, and Church of Ireland.

The Holy Land is understood to overlap both present-day Israel and Jordan, so places like Gilead, Mount Nebo, Bethany-beyond-the-Jordan, and Petra are included. And while the biblical periods and biblical connections remain in the forefront, these are explored in the context of the Holy Land's long and fascinating history. Ancient "tells" dating back to the Bronze Age, colonnaded streets and temples from Hellenistic and Roman times, early Christian pilgrimage destinations, Crusader castles, Mamluk and Ottoman fortifications--all illustrated with chronological charts, maps, site plans, and photographs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pilgrim spirituality for Holy Land travel, Jerusalem Bound resources the Christian traveler with biblical, historical, and contemporary images of the pilgrim life. Integrating historical sources, on-the-ground experience, and the voices of global pilgrims, Jerusalem Bound presents a fresh approach to pilgrimage, explores pilgrim identity and the Holy Land experience, offers ideas for Holy Land travel, and encourages pilgrims to focus upon the Other as much as themselves. Unique among Holy Land resources, Jerusalem Bound discusses material that is seldom addressed on a Holy Land journey: the motives of Holy Land pilgrims, the history of the Christian Holy Land, understanding the holy sites, pilgrim practices, material objects, and the challenges of Holy Land pilgrimage. Emphasizing the incarnational nature of lived experience, the book encourages pilgrims to derive meaning in both the highs and lows of religious travel. Attentive to the transformational nature of pilgrimage, Jerusalem Bound is ultimately interested in Christian formation and the aftermath of the Holy Land journey.

Book Dame Kathleen Kenyon

Download or read book Dame Kathleen Kenyon written by Miriam C Davis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dame Kathleen Kenyon has always been a larger-than-life figure, likely the most influential woman archaeologist of the 20th century. In the first full-length biography of Kenyon, Miriam Davis recounts not only her many achievements in the field but also her personal side, known to very few of her contemporaries. Her public side is a catalog of major successes: discovering the oldest city at Jericho with its amazing collection of plastered skulls; untangling the archaeological complexities of ancient Jerusalem and identifying the original City of David; participating in the discipline’s most famous all-woman excavation at Great Zimbabwe. Her development (with Sir Mortimer Wheeler) of stratigraphic trenching methods has been universally emulated by archaeologists for over half a century. Her private life—her childhood as daughter of the director of the British Museum, her accidental choice of a career in archaeology, her working at bombed sites in London during the blitz, and her solitary retirement to Wales—are generally unknown. Davis provides a balanced and illuminating picture of both the public Dame Kenyon and the private person.

Book excerpt: Don’t Just Read Prophecy. Step into Its Fulfillment. The study of prophecy inspires elaborate timelines and speculation about which world leader might rise to power in the last days. But meanwhile, it’s far too easy to miss the significant prophetic signs contained in stories of biblical characters, in God’s creation, and in the lives and actions of today’s Israelis and Palestinians. The Holy Land Key opens our eyes to little-known aspects of prophecy, including: · God’s master plan revealed in the seven Feasts of the Lord · The ingathering of God’s people, and the ways Israelis are hearing from God today · Significant prophetic patterns discovered in the lunar cycle · Awe-inspiring testimonies to God’s glory spelled out in the night sky · Glimpses of God’s future kingdom revealed in the stories of well-known figures from Scripture For decades, author and pastor Ray Bentley has partnered with God’s people in Israel, including Judea and Samaria, the area known as the West Bank. There, he witnesses the fulfillment of prophecy firsthand. This is your introduction to prophetic signs that God reveals in sometimes unexpected ways. He does not want us to miss the work he is doing to usher in the coming Kingdom.
