Book excerpt: From the author of the bestselling, The Holy Longing, comes a book about the central expression of faith for hundreds of millions of Christians, the Eucharist. More so than anything else, the Eucharist is what anchors many peoples' life, prayer, and ultimately the way they live their lives. In this deeply personal book, Father Ronald Rolheiser delves into the history and meaning of this sacred tradition, drawing upon the insights of various scripture scholars, theologians, and church teachings. With personal warmth and great insight, he reflects on his own particular Roman Catholic upbringing and the centrality that the Eucharist has within that tradition. At the same time, he looks at other denominations’ traditions around the Eucharist. Our One Great Act of Fidelity is an investigation into the ways people secure their faith and belief and discover true intimacy with God and each other. Ultimately, however, it is a spiritual and a personal statement of how Ronald Rolheiser understands the Eucharist and why he celebrates it every day. Ronald Rolheiser is a specialist in the field of spirituality and is currently President of the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, Texas. Father Rolheiser is the author of The Holy Longing, The Restless Heart, Forgotten Among the Lilies, The Shattered Lantern, and Against an Infinite Horizon. Book The Scandal of Sacramentality

Download or read book The Scandal of Sacramentality written by Brannon Hancock and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sacrament par excellence, the Eucharist, has been upheld as the foundational sacrament of Christ's Body called church, yet it has confounded Christian thinking and practice throughout history. Its symbolism points to the paradox of the incarnation, death, and resurrection of God in Jesus of Nazareth, which St Paul describes as a stumbling block (skandalon). Yet the scandal of sacramentality, not only illustrated by but enacted in the Eucharist, has not been sufficiently accounted for in theecclesiologies and sacramental theologies of the Christian tradition. Despite what appears to be an increasingly post-ecclesial world, sacrament remains a persistent theme in contemporary culture, often in places least expected. Drawing upon the biblical image of 'the Word made flesh', this interdisciplinary study examines the scandal of sacramentality along the twofold thematic of the scandal of language (word) and the scandal of the body (flesh). While sacred theology can think through this scandal only at significant risk to its own stability, the fictional discourses of literature and the arts are free to explore this scandal in a manner that simultaneously augments and challenges traditional notions of sacrament and sacramentality, and by extension, what it means to describe the church as a 'eucharistic community'.

Book The Beauty of the Eucharist

Download or read book The Beauty of the Eucharist written by and published by New City Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines what some of the most prominent voices of Christianity's distant past have taught about the Eucharist. The author's goal is to look at how the proponents of an emerging Christian orthodoxy understood, celebrated and presented the Eucharist in the centuries immediately following the end of the apostolic era. 'Dennis Billy has done a masterful job of exposing us to almost 600 years of Christian belief on the Eucharist as reflected in the Fathers of the Church. He reminds us that this living faith of the dead is part of our heritage, something that we ignore only at our peril and loss. His writing is clear, practical and his treatment of each Father consistent. He helps us to see how each writer adds to the mosaic and richness of our Eucharistic faith. Especially helpful are the reflection questions that end each chapter, as these force readers to plumb the depth of their own understanding and faith and to examine how the Eucharist affects the whole of their Christian lives. I recommend it highly. (Paul Bernier, Editor, Emmanuel Magazine).

Download or read book The Eucharistic Storms written by Barry Forbes and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2014-07-12 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eucharistic storms have battered the Catholic Church since a number of Christ's followers walked away at Capharnaum. While focusing on the three major eucharistic storms of history, this book exposes their primary attributes of denial and disbelief. The marginalization of the Real Presence, common over the past half century, bore fruit: half of all Catholics are unaware of the Church's teaching on the Real Presence. This aura of disbelief explains why massive numbers of Catholics walked away. Since the 1960s, the worldwide toll exceeds one hundred million souls. No one has any idea how large the final statistic might be, but the fallout silently continues. Communion in the hand while standing, received from a eucharistic minister who often shouldn't be there, is the most visible example of a failure to teach the essence of Catholicism. It is also an open portal to abuse. Critically, a significant percentage of Catholics have failed to understand what the Early Christians believed and died for, and what the Church has taught for two millennia: There is no survival without the Eucharist. Yet hope abounds. The Eucharistic Storms explains why a return to reverence, no matter how long it might take, is all but assured.

  • Author : Joseph Ratzinger
  • Publisher : Ignatius Press

  • ISBN : 1681492091

Download or read book God Is Near Us written by Joseph Ratzinger and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2003-06-17 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Second Vatican Council says, "We ought to try to discover a new reverence for the Eucharistic mystery. Something is happening that is greater than anything we can do. The liturgy is the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed; it is the font from which all her power flows." This profound statement about the Eucharist stands at the center of this book by Cardinal Ratzinger. He compellingly shows us the biblical, historical, and theological dimensions of the Eucharist. The Cardinal draws far-reaching conclusions, focusing on the importance of one's personal devotion to and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, for the personal reception of Communion by the individual Christian, as well as for the life of the Church. For Ratzinger, any transformation of the world on the social plane grows out of the celebration of the Eucharist. He beautifully illustrates how the omnipotent God comes intimately close to us in the Holy Eucharist, the Heart of Life.
