Book excerpt: In this book, six of Rev. Davis' Holy Blues are presented-- gospel songs with a taste of the blues. The online audio recordings teach these arrangements phrase by phrase as well as presenting the original recordings. These lessons are for the intermediate to advanced fingerstyle guitarist. All of the music is in notation and tablature. LESSON ONE: Rev. Davis played many gospel songs with a blues feel. These are referred to as Holy Blues. Death Don't Have No Mercy is an excellent example of a Holy Blues in the key of Em. Let Us Get Together follows, and is played in the key of G. This is a difficult arrangement illustrating Rev. Davis's control over his right hand. LESSON TWO: Rev. Gary Davis's religious arrangements in the key of C: I Belong to the Band and Tryin' to Get Home. LESSON THREE: For ragtime playing Rev. Davis would approach his guitar as if it were a piano. For gospel songs the guitar takes on the role of a full Baptist church! In this lesson we study two gospel arrangements, Pure Religion and I Am the Light of the World. Both are played in the key of C and have become popular in today's pop world. Book excerpt: How African American Christian music influenced Western cultural history and forever changed the world of song. What do blues, jazz, soul, R&B, rock'n'roll, folk, country, rock, pop and hip hop have in common? Their origin, their fire! Holy Blues (Gospel Blues) is the source of all the roots music we love. The history of gospel music is 400 years old; its spirit even much older, and without it we simply would not be able to be enchanted by soulful music today. Reason enough to trace this good spirit, Holy Spirit. The award-winning Swiss musician and book author Richard Koechli embarks on an adventurous journey through American cultural history and shows with countless concrete examples how high the influence of faith on the music and its producers has been throughout the centuries, how decisive and mysterious the divine dimension shapes the music at every moment. Koechli does this in a double package: as a book author with a soul stirring history trip, and as a blues artist with very personal interpretations of timeless Holy Blues songs (free download).

  • Author : Ian Zack
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2015-04-10

Download or read book Say No to the Devil written by Ian Zack and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-04-10 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Finally, the biography that Rev. Davis deserves. Ian Zack takes ‘Blind Gary’ out of the footnotes and into the footlights of the history of American music.” —Steve Katz, cofounder of Blood, Sweat & Tears Bob Dylan called Gary Davis “one of the wizards of modern music.” Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead—who took lessons with Davis—claimed his musical ability “transcended any common notion of a bluesman.” And the folklorist Alan Lomax called him “one of the really great geniuses of American instrumental music.” But you won’t find Davis alongside blues legends Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The first biography of Davis, Say No to the Devil restores “the Rev’s” remarkable story. Drawing on extensive research and interviews with many of Davis’s former students, Ian Zack takes readers through Davis’s difficult beginning as the blind son of sharecroppers in the Jim Crow South to his decision to become an ordained Baptist minister and his move to New York in the early 1940s, where he scraped out a living singing and preaching on street corners and in storefront churches in Harlem. There, he gained entry into a circle of musicians that included, among many others, Lead Belly, Woody Guthrie, and Dave Van Ronk. But in spite of his tremendous musical achievements, Davis never gained broad recognition from an American public that wasn’t sure what to make of his trademark blend of gospel, ragtime, street preaching, and the blues. His personal life was also fraught, troubled by struggles with alcohol, women, and deteriorating health. Zack chronicles this remarkable figure in American music, helping us to understand how he taught and influenced a generation of musicians.
