The first is to translate each word in a literal word for word fashion, keeping the original word order. (ISBN: 978-1973921967). When combined with the Greek text, they are called interlinears. The Modern Literal Version is the second type: ''Literal'' or ''word-for-word'' translation. This sounds like the first, but is not the same and the two are often confused. In a literal version each word and phrase is uniformly rendered, Greek idioms are carefully translated uniformly. The Greek parts of speech are rearranged as they would be in typical English order of: Subject, verb, object, indirect object, and punctuation are added. Greek is extremely choppy and supplied words are needed to have an ''English like flow'' to them rather than paraphrasing. Supplied words are identified in the MLV. The third translation method, and the most common one in the past 30 years, is to paraphrase the Greek into English. These are easy to spot because they read like a newspaper and have no supplied words marked. They are known by various names, such as dynamic equivalence, essentially literal, free style, thought-for-thought, better than a word-for-word, and so on. 95% of all Bible translations are this type. The value of paraphrased versions is for those looking for a Bible that reads like a story book and would never be used as a study tool. However, we feel strongly that thought-for-thought introduces too many editorial opinions. We want what God said, not an interpretation of it. They are sometimes better described as ''opinion for opinion'' because each time they are proofread more personal beliefs are exchanged for the Word of God. One way to look at it is like this: If there was a court case with a key document as evidence, and this document was in a foreign language, would a ''thought-for-thought'' translation be acceptable? Compiled by Robert Young in 1862, he went on to produce a revised version in 1887 based on the Westcott-Hort text which had been completed in 1885. Young died on October 14, 1888, and the publisher released a New Revised Edition in 1898. Young used the present tense in many places where other translations used the past tense- particularly in narratives. Book excerpt: OLD & NEW TESTAMENT The American Standard Version (ASV) came into being due to the leadership of Phillip Schaff, who assembled a team comprised of 30 American and British scholars. Work on the ASV was completed in 1901. The translation was tasked with the goal of an accurate, literal, word-for-word translation of the Holy Scriptures. The ASV took advantage of two 19th century developments to achieve their goal: improvements in understanding the grammar and syntax of koine Greek (the language of the New Testament), and a more complete library of manuscripts than previous Bible translators had access. As a result of this work the ASV translation was developed that retained distinctions made in Greek that are not normally expressed in modern English. For example, second person personal pronouns in modern English usage are normally "you" which gives no distinction between the singular and plural. Koine Greek unambiguously makes the distinction between a second person personal singular pronoun and the second person personal plural pronoun. In this case the ASV retained these distinctions by using archaic English ("you" for the singular and "ye" for the plural). The word-for-word translation of the ASV was attractive in the scholarly environment, and the ASV was adopted as the standard version used by many American seminaries. The ASV is the foundation and starting point for several modern translations. Hence it is a very good reference and even primary translation to use. Note: Paperback is 8.5x11 with regular thickness pages for durability. Also only 476 pages for portability. Note2: Tiny Font (Font=6) has been replaced with a Moderate Font (Font=8).
