Book Stars and Silhouettes

Download or read book Stars and Silhouettes written by Joceline Andersen and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-13 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extensive account of the cameo’s production history and how audiences affirm their mastery of celebrity culture. Stars and Silhouettes: The History of the Cameo Role in Hollywood traces the history of the cameo as it emerged in twentieth-century cinema. Although the cameo has existed in film culture for over a century, Joceline Andersen explains that this role cannot be strictly defined because it exists as a constellation of interactions between duration and recognition, dependent on who is watching and when. Even audiences of the twenty-first century who are inundated by the lives of movie stars and habituated to images of their personal friends on screens continue to find cameos surprising and engaging. Cameos reveal the links between our obsession with celebrity and our desire to participate in the powerful cultural industries within contemporary society. Chapter 1 begins with the cameo’s precedents in visual culture and the portrait in particular—from the Vitagraph executives in the 1910s to the emergence of actors as movie stars shortly after. Chapter 2 explores the fan-centric desire for behind-the-scenes visions of Hollywood that accounted for the success of cameo-laden, Hollywood-set films that autocratic studios used to make their glamorous line-up of stars as visible as possible. Chapter 3 traces the development of the cameo in comedy, where cameos began to show not only glimpses of celebrities at their best but also of celebrities at their worst. Chapter 4 examines how the television guest spot became an important way for stars and studios to market both their films and stars from other media in trades that reflected an increasingly integrated mediascape. In Chapter 5, Andersen examines auteur cameos and the cameo as a sign of authorship. Director cameos reaffirm the fan’s interest in the film not just as a stage for actors but as a forum for the visibility of the director. Cameos create a participatory space for viewers, where recognizing those singled out among extras and small roles allows fans to demonstrate their knowledge. Stars and Silhouettes belongs on the shelf of every scholar, student, and reader interested in film history and star studies.

Book The Other Hollywood

Download or read book The Other Hollywood written by Legs McNeil and published by It Books. This book was released on 2005-02-15 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As seen in Vanity Fair: A rollicking, funny, raunchy, and moving oral history of the adult film industry–from Deep Throat through today. As a recent New York Times Magazine cover story pointed out to average Americans, the adult film industry is a $10 billion–per–year business. It has infiltrated the American mainstream, with its stars showing up as mainstream TV hosts, making guest appearances in Hollywood feature films, and gracing the CD covers–and arms–of rock stars and Hollywood actors alike. But what most people don't know is how the porn industry got started–with a $22,000 Mafia investment in a film called Deep Throat–or how it mushroomed over the next quarter–century despite efforts by politicians, the FBI, and others to bring it down. The Other Hollywood tells that story, through hundreds of interviews by the people who lived through it. In the riveting oral–history format that made his first book, Please Kill Me, one of the most memorable accounts of 1970s underground culture, Legs McNeil now pulls back the grimy satin sheets on one of the most astounding success stories in the history of American business. Careening back and forth between two groups–the actresses, directors, and others who made the films and the shady underworld figures who financed them–The Other Hollywood offers scores of never–before–told stories, all in the voices of those who lived them. Witty, always compelling, and ultimately moving, The Other Hollywood is a Hollywood Babylon for today.

  • Pages : 408 pages

Download or read book Look written by Andrew L. Yarrow and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2021-11 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrew L. Yarrow tells the story of Look magazine, one of the greatest mass-circulation publications in American history, and the very different United States in which it existed. The all-but-forgotten magazine had an extraordinary influence on mid-twentieth-century America, not only by telling powerful, thoughtful stories and printing outstanding photographs but also by helping to create a national conversation around a common set of ideas and ideals. Yarrow describes how the magazine covered the United States and the world, telling stories of people and trends, injustices and triumphs, and included essays by prominent Americans such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Margaret Mead. It did not shy away from exposing the country’s problems, but it always believed that those problems could be solved. Look, which was published from 1937 to 1971 and had about 35 million readers at its peak, was an astute observer with a distinctive take on one of the greatest eras in U.S. history—from winning World War II and building immense, increasingly inclusive prosperity to celebrating grand achievements and advancing the rights of Black and female citizens. Because the magazine shaped Americans’ beliefs while guiding the country through a period of profound social and cultural change, this is also a story about how a long-gone form of journalism helped make America better and assured readers it could be better still.
