Book excerpt: Nowhere on Earth are sequels and the success that fosters them more apparent than in Hollywood's bejeweled bedroom, Beverly Hills. This continuation of the history begun in Arcadia Publishing's Images of America: Early Beverly Hills presents a compendium of vintage photographs depicting America's one community that's most synonymous with wealth. However, the Great Depression hit here, too, and the book depicts that as well as the subsequent recovery and boom years, homes of the stars, influence of the close proximity to Hollywood, and the chic shops and restaurants that keep the tourists coming. From the Brown Derby to the Beverly Theatre, from the Harold Lloyd Estate to Jack Warner's digs, from the Beverly Hills Hotel's changes to those that created a new Beverly Hills Civic Center, these are the Beverly Hills facts that have been the bases for all of those Hollywood fictions.

  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book Early Beverly Hills written by Marc Wanamaker and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Way before Rodeo Drive and the "pink palace" of the Beverly Hills Hotel were built, way before the namesake hillbillies, its zip code, and Eddie Murphy's detective techniques reaffirmed its place in popular culture, and way before its 1,001 mansions, Beverly Hills was comprised of wild canyons and ranchlands. Burton Green, one of the three original land developers of the Rancho Rodeo de las Aguas, named this place of severe terrain after Beverly Farms, Massachusetts, a 19th-century spa. Since its establishment in 1907, Beverly Hills, California, has been a crossroads for the great movers and shakers of the entertainment industry as well as the tycoons, world leaders, and flotsam and jetsam magnetized by the limelight. The vintage photographs in this provocative volume illustrate Beverly Hills's early transition from cow pastures to Hollywood's extremely illustrious bedroom community.

Download or read book Los Angeles and Beyond written by Don Young and published by Hunter Publishing, Inc. This book was released on 2011-04-20 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On September 4, 1781, 11 families - 44 people, including 26 blacks - walked out of Mission San Gabriel Arcangel to establish a community closer to the harbor. That village, El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Angeles (The Town of Our Lady, the Queen of the Angel), was to become the City of Los Angeles. The Mission San Gabriel Arcangel is still here and you can visit it. The old and the new blend well in Los Angeles. It is the largest city in the state and the second-largest in the nation, and it is California's business and commercial center as well. But overall, the region is most famous perhaps for being the "heartland" of the nation's entertainment industry, a place where fact and fancy blend into one ... and every reel has a happy ending. All of the surrounding communities are explored - Pacific Palisades, Redondo Beach, Venice, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Burbank, Canoga Park, Malibu, Santa Monica, Pasadena, Pomona, San Marino, and more. For each one, downtown Los Angeles included, the authors detail the things you should see, the adventures you can discover, the unforgettable places to eat, the most luxurious and the most affordable places to stay. Where to take in a baseball game, rollerblade the boardwalks, browse an art festival, people watch at the beach, sport fish near offshore islands or see world-class performances by street entertainers. This guide explores the region fully, with an emphasis on outdoor activities, from golf and birdwatching to wine tours, watersports and hiking. Touring chapters take you to all the well-known sights, and then lead you off to unusual attractions that will amuse and delight you. Accommodation sections cover all, from camping to B & Bs to historical houses, like Elvis's vacation home, available for rent. Restaurants and cafes are chosen for their charm and impressive cuisine. Often, doing something that you've done a dozen times before, but doing it in a different place, at a different time, or with a different person can make all the difference. Under the right circumstances, even the routine can become an adventure. Everything in life is an adventure. At least, it is the first time you experience it. Every sight, every sound, every scent, every taste, every sensation is an adventure that once. Why? Because it is a discovery . And every new discovery is an adventure. So, the authors dedicate this book to discovery: to experiencing new places, new people, new activities, new sensations, but above all, to discovering new dimensions within ourselves.

Book Left on Tenth

Download or read book Left on Tenth written by Delia Ephron and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2022-04-12 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bestselling, beloved writer of romantic comedies like You've Got Mail tells her own late-in-life love story in her "resplendent memoir," complete with a tragic second act and joyous resolution (Adriana Trigiani, bestselling author of The Good Left Undone). Delia Ephron had struggled through several years of heartbreak. She’d lost her sister, Nora, and then her husband, Jerry, both to cancer. Several months after Jerry’s death, she decided to make one small change in her life—she shut down his landline, which crashed her internet. She ended up in Verizon hell. She channeled her grief the best way she knew: by writing a New York Times op-ed. The piece caught the attention of Peter, a Bay Area psychiatrist, who emailed her to commiserate. Recently widowed himself, he reminded her that they had shared a few dates fifty-four years before, set up by Nora. Delia did not remember him, but after several weeks of exchanging emails and sixties folk songs, he flew east to see her. They were crazy, utterly, in love. But this was not a rom-com: four months later she was diagnosed with AML, a fierce leukemia. In Left on Tenth, Delia Ephron enchants as she seesaws us between tears and laughter, navigating the suicidal lows of enduring cutting-edge treatment and the giddy highs of a second chance at love. With Peter and her close girlfriends by her side, with startling clarity, warmth, and honesty about facing death, Ephron invites us to join her team of warriors and become believers ourselves. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During pilot season, June Dietz's husband Mitch Gold becomes another man—a man who doesn't notice her delicious Farmers Market homemade dinners, who mumbles responses around the tooth-whitening trays in his mouth, who is consumed with envy for his fellow television actors, who pants for a return phone call from his agent. And who wants to be married to an abject, paranoid, oblivious mess? Possibly not June, whose job as a poetry professor at UCLA makes her in but not of Los Angeles, with its illogical pecking order and relentless tribal customs. Even their daughter Nora's allegedly innocent world isn't immune from one upsmanship: while Mitch is bested for acting jobs by the casually confident (and so very L.A.) Willie Dermot, June is tormented by Willie's insufferably uptight wife Larissa and the other stay-at-home exercisers in the preschool. Could Rich Friend be the answer? Smart, age-appropriate, bookish—and a wildly successful television producer—Rich focuses on June the way nobody has since she moved to Los Angeles, and there's nothing for June to do but wallow in what she's been missing. But what's the next step? How does a regular person decide between husband and lover, family and fantasy? Set in a Los Angeles you haven't read about before, Beverly Hills Adjacent is that rare thing: a laugh-out-loud novel with heart.

Download or read book Ghosts of Cielo Drive written by David Oman and published by . This book was released on 2019-10-03 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I wrote the book from my own unique perspective regarding the spirits or ghosts amongst us. One not commonly seen or shown on TV and rarely discussed, however, I live in what one paranormal expert declared, 'the Mount Everest of Haunted Houses' and 'The Disneyland for the Dead' and have now for over 17 years with no problems or issues. While just down the drive from my house one of the most gruesome and notorious murders of our time was committed on August 8th, 1969 when Charles Manson's 'Family' descended on Roman Polanski's residence on Cielo Drive in Beverly Hills and brutally murdered 5 people including Polanski's wife pregnant Sharon Tate. Now my home is visited by far more than those who were killed down from my home, the house seems to be a 'Ghost Flophouse' according to Mary Anne Winkowski, the real life Ghost Whisperer' she is convinced that it truly is a one of a kind location and my attitude towards my unseen house guests is also unheard of. You see I don't and am not afraid of the spirits that visit and hang out here. My thoughts are that we all will pass from this earth and those who have passed before us returning to visit us isn't something to be scared about, quite to the contrary I believe it is unique to have such an experience and that it's a positive to be one of the few who has had an encounter with a spirit. My motto is "You have more to Fear from the Living than you do the Dead'.

Book excerpt: "Translated here for the first time into any language, Mountain Doctrine, Ocean of Definitive Meaning: Final Unique Quintessential Instructions is a seminal fourteenth-century Tibetan text on the nature of reality. The author, Dol-bo-ba Shay-rap-gyel-tsen, was one of the most influential figures of that dynamic period of doctrinal formulation and his text is a sustained argument about the buddha-nature, also called the matrix-of-one-gone-thus." "Dol-bo-ba recognizes two important types of emptiness - self-emptiness and other-emptiness - and shows how other-emptiness is the actual ultimate truth. He justifies this controversial formulation by arguing that it was the favored system of all the early outstanding figures of the great vehicle and by showing how important these doctrines were in India." "The translator's introduction includes a short biography of Dol-bo-ba and an exposition of nine focal topics in his religious philosophy."--BOOK JACKET.
