Book The Classical Hollywood Reader

Download or read book The Classical Hollywood Reader written by Steve Neale and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Classical Hollywood Reader brings together essential readings to provide a history of Hollywood from the 1910s to the mid 1960s. Following on from a Prologue that discusses the aesthetic characteristics of Classical Hollywood films, Part 1 covers the period between the 1910s and the mid-to-late 1920s. It deals with the advent of feature-length films in the US and the growing national and international dominance of the companies responsible for their production, distribution and exhibition. In doing so, it also deals with film making practices, aspects of style, the changing roles played by women in an increasingly business-oriented environment, and the different audiences in the US for which Hollywood sought to cater. Part 2 covers the period between the coming of sound in the mid 1920s and the beginnings of the demise of the `studio system` in late 1940s. In doing so it deals with the impact of sound on films and film production in the US and Europe, the subsequent impact of the Depression and World War II on the industry and its audiences, the growth of unions, and the roles played by production managers and film stars at the height of the studio era. Part 3 deals with aspects of style, censorship, technology, and film production. It includes articles on the Production Code, music and sound, cinematography, and the often neglected topic of animation. Part 4 covers the period between 1946 and 1966. It deals with the demise of the studio system and the advent of independent production. In an era of demographic and social change, it looks at the growth of drive-in theatres, the impact of television, the advent of new technologies, the increasing importance of international markets, the Hollywood blacklist, the rise in art house imports and in overseas production, and the eventual demise of the Production Code. Designed especially for courses on Hollywood Cinema, the Reader includes a number of newly researched and written chapters and a series of introductions to each of its parts. It concludes with an epilogue, a list of resources for further research, and an extensive bibliography.

Book Star Dust in Hollywood Classic Reprint

Download or read book Star Dust in Hollywood Classic Reprint written by Jan Gordon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-02-17 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Star-Dust in Hollywood Jo's search for the bathroom was vain. We reached the club, at which we were to be the honoured guests, twenty minutes late, and not only unwashed, but visibly motor-soiled. Instead of accepting our formal introductions as nice celebri ties should, we dashed straight to the club lavatories and washed. The doctor's wife, a friend from our earlier Visit, had to scrub Jo's neck down to the dress limit - there was no time in which to clean merely invisible areas. We then could hold out our newly cleansed hands to the half-famished members. Before entering the supper-room I examined our instruments to see if any strings had broken, but to my dismay found that the plectrum of Jo's laud had somehow been jerked from the case and was lost. The shops by now were all shut, but luck discovered in the building a beauty parlour, and in the beauty parlour an eyebrow-brush, like a small tooth-brush. Our performance was saved. Book My Hollywood Diary Classic Reprint

Download or read book My Hollywood Diary Classic Reprint written by Edgar Wallace and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-21 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Hollywood Diary When my husband's trip to Hollywood was at first discussed, it was our hope that I should be able to accompany him, but the illness of my little girl and business ties in London made it impossible for me to get away until February. This, then, was to be the first time for fifteen years that I should not be in the closest touch with all his activities. We had discussed this trip to Hollywood so many times and both realized the enormous possibilities that might materialize if his work there was successful, and though my husband was a prolific letter-writer, I wanted a more detailed account of his impressions than I should, in all probability, get from his more personal letters. It was, therefore, with the idea of keeping me posted of daily events that Edgar dictated this diary which was sent to me regularly every week while he was away, in addition to his per sonal letters.
