Book From entertainment to citizenship

Download or read book From entertainment to citizenship written by John Street and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From entertainment to citizenship reveals how the young use shows like X-factor to comment on how power ought to be used, and how they respond to those pop stars – like Bono and Bob Geldof – who claim to represent them. It explores how young people connect the pleasures of popular culture to the world at large. For them, popular culture is not simply a matter of escapism and entertainment, but of engagement too. The place of popular culture in politics, and its contribution to democratic life, has too often been misrepresented or misunderstood. This book provides the evidence and analysis that will help correct this misperception. It documents the voices of young people as they talk about popular culture (what they love as well as what they dislike), and as they reveal their thoughts about the world they inhabit. It will be of interest to those who study media and culture, and those who study politics.

Book Blood is only Red Sweat

Download or read book Blood is only Red Sweat written by Nick Towle and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-11-17 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The blood-spattered world of bare-knuckle boxing is the ultimate test for the fist merchants of the modern era, and they come no more fearsome than the man they call The Beast. Mere mention of the name Dave Radford is enough to send shivers down the spines of even the most hardened bare-knuckle warriors. The Yorkshire lion heart roared into the UK knuckle pit after a terrible accident down a shaft spelled the end of what promised to be a glittering professional career with the gloves. Not to be deterred, The Beast simply whipped the gloves off and unleashed his own brand of hell on the unforgiving world of knuckle boxing. Here, in his own words, the man who shot to the stars then crashed back down to earth tells it like it is in a brutally-candid account of his rollercoaster journey back to the Elysian Fields of the noble art... ' To the lions, blood is nectar ' Mark Kram.

Book May I Have Your Attention Please

Download or read book May I Have Your Attention Please written by James Corden and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-09-29 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLING AUTOBIOGRAPHY So... the story of my life. I've often thought about this moment, about what it would be like to write my memoirs. I always thought it would make me feel important. It doesn't. If anything it makes me feel a little strange. The truth is, I should never have been this famous guy. I wasn't the cool, clever, good-looking boy at school. But I always dreamt of it, hoped for it, longed for it: throughout school when I was disruptive, in my teens when I tried to form my own boy band and through hundreds of auditions for parts which were met with constant rejection. Until finally I co-wrote Gavin and Stacey. And my whole life changed... This is that story. The story of how I found myself here, talking to you.

Book Unlocking the Love Lock

Download or read book Unlocking the Love Lock written by Ceri Houlbrook and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2021-01-13 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the worldwide popularity of the love-lock as a ritual token of love and commitment by considering its history, symbolism, and heritage. “[T]his is an eminently enjoyable and thorough investigation of a popular phenomenon through the lens of heritage and folk tradition.”—Sara De Nardi, Western Sydney University A padlock is a mundane object, designed to fulfil a specific – and secular – purpose. A contemporary custom has given padlocks new significance. This custom is ‘love-locking’, where padlocks are engraved with names and attached to bridges in declaration of romantic commitment. This custom became popular in the 2000s, and its dissemination was rapid, geographically unbound, and highly divisive, with love-locks emerging in locations as diverse as Paris and Taiwan; New York and Seoul; Melbourne and Moscow. From the introduction: I was distractedly perusing the photo frame aisle, my eyes skimming the generically sentimental stock pictures of happy families smiling at the camera, pretty landscapes, cute pets and couples walking hand-in-hand, when I came across one that jumped out at me.... I recognised the image instantly as a photograph of love-locks: the padlocks that had been appearing en masse on bridges and other public structures on a global scale since the early 2000s. And, having been researching the custom known as lovelocking for about five years at that point, it was with a peculiar sense of pride that I realised love-locks had accomplished the status of a stock image.
