Book excerpt: The #1 New York Times bestselling author’s “bittersweet Christmas story offers the promise of a better tomorrow” (Booklist). The flames of memory always seem to glow a little brighter during the holidays. Perhaps that’s why this time of year is so difficult for airline heiress Ivy Macintosh, as she faces thoughts of yet another festive season alone. Since the plane crash that claimed the lives of her husband and two children eight years ago, she’s been submerged in grief. When eleven-year-old Holly Greenwood knocks on her door, lost and frightened after a forbidden visit to her singing teacher, Ivy’s self-imposed exile is shattered. Holly has an extraordinary voice and wants nothing more than to perform in an upcoming Christmas musical. Holly’s father, Daniel, doesn’t allow music in their home, refusing to give a good reason why. Yet Ivy is drawn to the warmth she senses beneath his gruff exterior. As Christmas nears, their shared concern for Holly begins to draw Ivy back into the world again—and toward a family who may need her just as much as she needs them . . . “This time of the year it is great to have a story that will put a smile on your face. I know it did for me. So as the weather gets colder and Christmas is nearer, Holly and Ivy could be the book for you.”—Fresh Fiction “The storyline is an emotional rollercoaster, so keep a tissue box nearby . . . Book Sinatra

Download or read book Sinatra written by James Kaplan and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2015-10-27 with total page 908 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just in time for the Chairman’s centennial, the endlessly absorbing sequel to James Kaplan’s bestselling Frank: The Voice—which completes the definitive biography that Frank Sinatra, justly termed the “Entertainer of the Century,” deserves and requires. Like Peter Guralnick on Elvis, Kaplan goes behind the legend to give us the man in full, in his many guises and aspects: peerless singer, (sometimes) accomplished actor, business mogul, tireless lover, and associate of the powerful and infamous. In 2010’s Frank: The Voice, James Kaplan, in rich, distinctive, compulsively readable prose, told the story of Frank Sinatra’s meteoric rise to fame, subsequent failures, and reinvention as a star of live performance and screen. The story of “Ol’ Blue Eyes” continues with Sinatra: The Chairman, picking up the day after he claimed his Academy Award in 1954 and had reestablished himself as the top recording artist. Sinatra’s life post-Oscar was astonishing in scope and achievement and, occasionally, scandal, including immortal recordings almost too numerous to count, affairs ditto, many memorable films (and more than a few stinkers), Rat Pack hijinks that mesmerized the world with their air of masculine privilege, and an intimate involvement at the intersection of politics and organized crime that continues to shock and astound with its hubris. James Kaplan has orchestrated the wildly disparate aspects of Frank Sinatra’s life and character into an American epic—a towering achievement in biography of a stature befitting its subject.

Book Stepping Back in Time Jardine Payne Hoy

Download or read book Stepping Back in Time Jardine Payne Hoy written by Keith Payne and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-05-09 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Mother, Doreen Hilda Payne (nee Jardine) executed much of this research, tracing our forebears history back to the 1800s and possibly the very late 1700s. This may not seem a long time ago but when you remember that in those early times, people rode around on horseback; motor vehicles and aeroplanes were 100 years away from being invented. The Duke of Wellington was defeating Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815 and in 1860 the American Civil War was yet to happen; while space travel was only an imaginative comic book dream. This tells you how long ago 1800 was, let alone the 1700s. The purpose of this document is to create an ongoing history of this immediate family and those involved, so that our Children and our Childrens Children will know where they came from and the histories and interests of these family members. Also the times in which they lived; indeed how much life and lifes struggles have changed over the years. It is my hope that our (Doreen and Keith Payne) Children, Holly and James and their Children, Jessica and Isabella by Holly and Sophie Olivia by James and Vicky will add their story to this historical document and pass it onto their Children. Should each subsequent generation add their story, this document will become historical in its own right. When I realised all the effort my Mother had put into locating her ancestors as far back as she had and realised exactly what she had managed to achieve, I believed it would be a great tragedy if all her endeavours were lost; herewith the book. Not many children know beyond their immediate grandparents so what an incredible history this will be if it is maintained down the years, recording all the changes in the way we live and additions to our family. Bless you Mother.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume fills a gap in traditional women's history books by offering fascinating details of the lives of early American women and showing how these women adapted to the challenges of daily life in the colonies. Women in Early America: Struggle, Survival, and Freedom in a New World provides insight into an era in American history when women had immense responsibilities and unusual freedoms. These women worked in a range of occupations such as tavernkeeping, printing, spiritual leadership, trading, and shopkeeping. Pipe smoking, beer drinking, and premarital sex were widespread. One of every eight people traveling with the British Army during the American Revolution was a woman. The coverage begins with the 1607 settlement at Jamestown and ends with the War of 1812. In addition to the role of Anglo-American women, the experiences of African, French, Dutch, and Native American women are discussed. The issues discussed include how women coped with rural isolation, why they were prone to superstitions, who was likely to give birth out of wedlock, and how they raised large families while coping with immense household responsibilities.

But he learns quickly that love and purpose entail far more than the romantic ideal -- that being alive is as much about longing, sacrifice and losing as it is about emerging victoriously -- that love everlasting means more than he'd ever imagined.
