Book Hollister Spencer Family Papers

Download or read book Hollister Spencer Family Papers written by Spencer (Family (Rochester, N.Y.)) and published by . This book was released on 1853 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection consists of material of the families of Rochesterians Harriet (Hollister) Spencer (1887-1962) and her husband Thomas G. Spencer (1884-1978). Included in the collection is correspondence the Spencers received from their two children Hollister (Holly) and Thomas. While Thomas was in Europe in 1934, he wrote numerous letters home to his parents. These often included the articles which he wrote about his travels in France, Germany, Poland, Russia, Portugal and Brussels. The following year, Holly spent the summer away and wrote home frequently. Other family related materials include a day book (1869-1887) of Sarah E. Hollister, poems written about individual family members, a catalogue of Harriet and Thomas Spencer's house belongings, and a list of Harriet Spencer's family silver pieces. There is also a scrap book (1880-1910) containing newspaper clippings of social notices and obituaries pertaining to the Hollisters, Spencers, Starks and Sibleys, along with other prose and poetry clippings. Another note book contains the obituaries of Mrs. George A. Hollister, and Emmet H. Hollister (October 6, 1853), and a memorial sermon by Rev. A. G. Hall (June 18, 1871). The collection also includes photographs of various members of the Weed, Barnes, Hollister and Spencer families. Other material in the collection relates to projects and organizations in which the Spencers were involved. Thomas Spencer spent many years attempting to verify the authenticity of a flag, the "Lincoln Flag", which was said to have belonged to Abraham Lincoln. The correspondence accumulated through this effort dates from 1955 to 1978. Harriet Hollister Spencer, in the 1930's, was a member of the Rochester branch of the Volunteer Knitting Section of the Needlework Guild of America. The collection contains various papers relating to the organization's program to knit clothes for needy children. Later, in the 1950's, Harriet Spencer became involved in the Rochester Rose Society and was active in such projects as the Herb Lecture Series (1952), a Rose Show and exhibit (1955), and the planting of an old fashioned historical rose garden at the Rochester Museum of Arts and Sciences (1956).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Bainbridge, Jr.'s Gun Barons is a narrative history of six charismatic and idiosyncratic men who changed the course of American history through the invention and refinement of repeating weapons. Love them or hate them, guns are woven deeply into the American soul. Names like Colt, Smith & Wesson, Winchester, and Remington are legendary. Yet few people are aware of the roles these men played at a crucial time in United States history, from westward expansion in the 1840s, through the Civil War, and into the dawn of the Gilded Age. Through personal drive and fueled by bloodshed, they helped propel the young country into the forefront of the world's industrial powers. Their creations helped save a nation divided, while planting seeds that would divide the country again a century later. Their inventions embodied an intoxicating thread of American individualism—part fiction, part reality—that remains the foundation of modern gun culture. They promoted guns not only for the soldier, but for the Everyman, and also made themselves wealthy beyond their most fevered dreams. Gun Barons captures how their bold inventiveness dwelled in the psyche of an entire people, not just in the minds of men who made firearm fortunes. Whether we revere these larger-than-life men or vilify them, they helped forge the American character.

Download or read book The Private Civil War written by Randall C. Jimerson and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1994-10-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians have given much attention to the Civil War’s prominent players—its generals, politicians, and other public leaders—but they have devoted less attention to the common soldiers and civilians—the “plain folk”—who actively participated in the conflict. In his study of popular thought during the Civil War era, Randall C. Jimerson offers a grass-roots perspective on the war by examining the thoughts and ideas of these ordinary men and women. The Private Civil War derives much of its power from the author’s deft use of personal letters and diaries. Separated from home and family, virtually every soldier and many civilians wrote frequent and informative letters or recorded daily experiences and thoughts in journals. Jimerson has consulted a broad cross section of these documents, culling information from letters and diaries written by people from every state and from all social classes and military ranks. These documents, remarkable in many instances for their depth of feeling and eloquence, provide rich, detailed information about sectional perceptions and ideology as well as many private reflections.

Topics covered include international affairs, legal issues, engineering discussions, and personal and family matters.
