Download or read book Shouting Embracing and Dancing written by Calvin Hollett and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2010-02-19 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contesting previous historical scholarship, Calvin Hollett argues that the growth in Methodism was not the result of clergy-dominated missionary work intended to rescue a degenerated populace. Instead, the author shows how Methodism flourished as a people's movement in which believers in coastal locations were free to experience individual and communal rapture and welcomed at lay revivals in more populous areas. An insightful look at the growth of a religion, Shouting, Embracing, and Dancing with Ecstasy reasserts the importance of laypeople in religious matters, while detailing successful ways to bring the religious experience into daily life.

This book was released on 1998-11-01 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Byrne, Chaffey, Fahey, Fizzard, Fudge, Grouchy, Hynes, Inkpen, Lyver, McLaughlin, Miles, Murphy, Puddester, Quirk -- the names themselves are evocative of Newfoundland. Family Names of the Island of Newfoundland traces the origins of almost 3,000 surnames found on the Island and provides an engaging and comprehensive collection of etymology, genealogy, and Newfoundland history. The introduction presents a fascinating discussion of the history and linguistic origins of surnames found in Newfoundland, which come from many different cultures, notably English, Welsh, Irish, Scottish, French, Syrian, Lebanese, and Mi'kmaq. The main body of the book comprises a dictionary of surnames in the province based on data collected from provincial voting lists, family records, government documents, and newspaper reports dating back to the seventeenth century. Each entry includes variant spellings and cross-references of the surname, the countries in which the name originated, and its meaning. Newfoundland place names associated with the surname are also given. The book also includes a ranking of the most common surnames in Newfoundland and a comparative analysis of the frequency of surnames in Scotland, Ireland, England, and Newfoundland. Originally published in 1977, Family Names of the Island of Newfoundland is a unique reference work, giving Newfoundlanders, both in the province and away, a fascinating look at their roots. This edition incorporates a number of additions and corrections and has been completely reset in a sturdier and more convenient format. It will be of great use to individuals tracing their ancestors and to genealogists researching early settlers in Newfoundland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With space exploration programs at a near standstill, the United States decides to reignite its program by sending an entire nuclear family into space under the guise that the family will spend months living on the International Space Station. In reality, the US plans to send the family to a secret facility on the moon where they will be placed into a state of hibernation for three months and have information and training fed directly to their brains. If successful, the family’s mission would pave the way for the future of space exploration, travel, and even habitation. The MacMurchaid family, which consists of father Robert, mother Denise, and children Tony, Troy, Kris, and Nicole, is suddenly thrust into the spotlight when they are chosen for the mission of being the first family sent into space. Their training and their trip into space—as detailed in this book and supplemented with real-life historical space program tidbits—go smoothly. But soon after the family members are placed into hibernation on the moon, war breaks out on Earth, and the family is abandoned and presumed dead. The MacMurchaids awake over 455 years later, facing a new world and new challenges. Will the knowledge and training they were fed during hibernation allow them to overcome these challenges? Read and find out.

Book excerpt: These days, genealogy seems to be enjoying a massive outbreak in popularity. When I started, such was not the case. It was a lonely ordeal. I try to describe more in my book how I felt and the emotions I went through. This book is not about birth dates, death dates, or boring stuff but about talking to ninety-year-old people in nursing homes and hearing their stories, their lives—that’s what impressed me. This research required turning over many stones and peering beneath to uncover stories long forgotten. I do go into biographical detail about my grandfather, Forman Way, mainly because I had researched so much information on his life and the historic times he lived through in the Cape Breton labor movement. My other grandfather, who I never knew, Captain John Jarvis, was also a constant inspiration as I tried to do my best to uncover his story, his life, and his death and the fate of a crew of twenty-two men who perished at sea.
