Book Holland s Life of Abraham Lincoln

Download or read book Holland s Life of Abraham Lincoln written by Josiah Gilbert Holland and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soon after the assassination of President Lincoln in April 1865, newspaper editor Josiah Gilbert Holland traveled to Illinois to talk with people who had known Abraham Lincoln "back when." In 1866 Holland published the earliest full-scale life of the fallen leader. A great popular success, Holland's biography introduced American readers who were hungry for personal information about Lincoln's early life to some of the most famous and enduring Lincoln stories. From Holland the reader learned about Lincoln making restitution for a ruined book, the railsplitter earning his first silver dollar, the millhorse's kick to his head, the wrestling match with Jack Armstrong. Holland relayed homey stories about the young Illinois legislator and lawyer and poignant ones about the president during the dark days of the Civil War. Holland was one of the earliest biographers of Lincoln to insist that Lincoln had always opposed slavery and had planned consistently for emancipation. Most debatable, from the viewpoint of some later historians, Holland demonstrated that Lincoln was "eminently a Christian President." To understand the sixteenth president and the making of his public image, it is necessary to begin with Holland's Life of Abraham Lincoln. J. G. Holland (1819-1881) was editor-in-chief of the Springfield (Mass.) Republican and founder of Scribner's Monthly. Introducer Allen C. Guelzo is the author of The Crisis of the American Republic: A History of the Civil War and Reconstruction Era. He is Grace F. Kea Professor of American History and chair of the History Department at Eastern College in Pennsylvania.

Book The Life of Abraham Lincoln

Download or read book The Life of Abraham Lincoln written by Henry Ketcham and published by . This book was released on 1901 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In his introduction to The Life of Abraham Lincoln, Henry Ketcham notes that there has been so much written about Lincoln that the legend has begun to obscure, if not to efface, the man. In this biography the single purpose has been to present the living man with such distinctness of outline that the reader may have a sort of feeling of being acquainted with him. Ketcham's clearly-written, unadorned account of Lincoln's life achieves its stated purpose, never removing its focus from the man who became the 16th President of the United States and led the nation through some of its most turbulent and difficult times."--Amazon.com

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IN the following pages I have endeavored to give the life of Abraham Lincoln, from his birth to his inauguration as President of the United States. The reader will judge the character of the performance by the work itself: for that reason I shall spare him the perusal of much prefatory explanation. At the time of Mr. Lincoln's death, I determined to write his history, as I had in my possession much valuable material for such a purpose. I did not then imagine that any person could have better or more extensive materials than I possessed. I soon learned, however, that Mr. William H. Herndon of Springfield, Ill., was similarly engaged. There could be no rivalry between us; for the supreme object of both was to make the real history and character of Mr. Lincoln as well known to the public as they were to us. He deplored, as I did, the many publications pretending to be biographies which came teeming from the press, so long as the public interest about Mr. Lincoln excited the hope of gain. Out of the mass of works which appeared, of one only-Dr. Holland's-is it possible to speak with any degree of respect.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it originally appeared, A New Birth of Freedom represented a milestone in Lincoln studies, the culmination of over a half a century of study and reflection by one of America's foremost scholars of American politics. Now reissued on the centenary of Jaffa’s birth with a new foreword by the esteemed Lincoln scholar Allen Guelzo, this long-awaited sequel to Jaffa’s earlier classic, Crisis of the House Divided, offers a piercing examination of the political thought of Abraham Lincoln and the themes of self-government, equality, and statesmanship on the eve of the Civil War. “Four decades ago, Harry Jaffa offered powerful insights on the Lincoln-Douglas debates in his Crisis of the House Divided. In this long-awaited sequel, he picks up the threads of that earlier study in this stimulating new interpretation of the showdown conflict between slavery and freedom in the election of 1860 and the secession crisis that followed. Every student of Lincoln needs to read and ponder this book.”— James M. McPherson, Princeton University “A masterful synthesis and analysis of the contending political philosophies on the eve of the Civil War. A magisterial work that arrives after a lifetime of scholarship and reflection—and earns our gratitude as well as our respect.”— Kirkus Reviews “The essence of Jaffa's case—meticulously laid out over nearly 500 pages—is that the Constitution is not, as Lincoln put it, a 'free love arrangement' held together by passing fancy. It is an indissoluble compact in which all men consent to be governed by majority, provided their inalienable rights are preserved.”— Bret Stephens; The Wall Street Journal

Book My Life in America Before During and After the Civil War

Download or read book My Life in America Before During and After the Civil War written by Louis Hensel and published by Jo-An Pictures Limited. This book was released on 2012-10-31 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louis Hensel was born in 1817 and lived a life of travel and adventure, as colorfully described in these letters to his granddaughter. This book is skillfully translated by Sigrid Wilshinsky from the Suderlein German handwriting into modern English. Hensel worked and traveled from Germany to France and Holland and finally arrived in New York City in 1848. On his first day in Manhattan, he sought and found a job and began working as a carver of artistic ivory pieces in an Art Shop. He later moved to Long Island to become a farmer. His very realistic descriptions of adventures with animals and people give a spellbinding view of his life and events. At the onset of the Civil War, he entered the Cavalry regiment in Brooklyn as an Officer and Master of the Horse. Later, Hensel spent many years traveling with the German Opera Company of New York which performed city to city, from New Orleans to St. Paul, where he vividly describes a wanton destruction and disruption of Southern cities in the path of the War. Hensel had the opportunity to meet President Abraham Lincoln which facilitated a visit to the White House on March 27, 1863, where Lincoln greeted representatives of the Cheyenne, Kiowa, Arapaho, Comanche, Apache and Caddo Tribes in the East room of the White House. This meeting is mentioned in an edition of The Atlanta Century of March 29th 1863. The eye-witness report by Hensel, of this meeting, to our knowledge, has never been revealed before. Hensel ended his years as a music teacher in the town of Hawley, PA as his base. His insightful recollections and description of country life and changing society takes one back in History as if one is being spoken to through time by Hensel, himself. His fascinating letters tell an exciting and inspiring story about surviving in America before, during and after the Civil War era that one can easily relate to in today’s times.
