Book Natural Running

Download or read book Natural Running written by Abshire Danny and published by VeloPress. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural Running is the middle ground runners have been looking for. By learning to run the barefoot way, while wearing shoes, runners will become more efficient, stronger, and healthier runners. Backed by studies at MIT and Harvard, running form and injury expert Danny Abshire presents the natural running technique, form drills, and an 8-week transition plan that will put runners on the path to faster, more efficient, and healthier running. In Natural Running, Abshire explains how modern running shoes distort the efficient running technique that humans evolved over thousands of years. He reviews the history of running shoes and injuries, making the case for barefoot running but also warning about its dangers. By learning the natural running technique, runners can enjoy both worlds: comfortable feet, knees, and legs and an efficient running form that reduces impact and injuries.Natural Running teaches runners to think about injuries as symptoms of poor running form. Abshire specifies the overuse injuries that are most commonly associated with particular body alignment problems, foot types, and form flaws. Runners will learn how to analyze and identify their own characteristics so they can start down the path to natural running.Abshire explains the natural running technique, describing the posture, arm carriage, cadence, and land-lever-lift foot positioning that mimic the barefoot running style. Using Abshire’s 8-week transition plan and a tool kit of strength and form drills, runners will move from heel striking to a midfoot or forefoot strike.Natural Running is the newest way to run and also the oldest. By discovering how they were meant to run, runners will become more efficient, stronger, and healthier runners.

Book Runner s World Your Best Stride

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Run the Way You Were Born to Run Every runner wants a smooth, light, powerful, and resilient stride. But there isn't one ideal form all runners should try to emulate. Instead, research and experience show that people can run effectively in a wide variety of patterns with some universal elements. In lively, accessible prose, author Jonathan Beverly details his search for common ground among physical therapists, podiatrists, biomechanics researchers, and coaches, and reveals how individual runners can apply those principles and improve their performance, avoid injury, and enhance their enjoyment on the run. With specific, illustrated exercises that show how to counteract tight muscles from excessive sitting, improve limited arm mobility from hunching over electronic devices, strengthen your feet for better balance, and improve speed by lengthening your stride, Runner's World Your Best Stride is an approachable guide to human movement and a practical tool for improved running performance.

Book Holistic Rehab Therapies

Download or read book Holistic Rehab Therapies written by Anne M. Fletcher and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2013-01-15 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anne M. Fletcher is a trusted medical writer and the bestselling author of eight books. Her most recent, Inside Rehab: The Surprising Truth About Addiction Treatment—and How to Get Help That Works Inside Rehab, documents what works and what doesn’t when it comes to treatment for drug and alcohol addiction. She spent years visiting treatment programs and talking to hundreds of rehab clients, staffers, program administrators, and leading experts to discover the strategies that have been shown in scientific studies to be effective for helping people overcome addiction. In her investigation of scientifically sound approaches for helping people overcome addictions, no “holistic” or “alternative” treatments—sometimes called “complementary” or “integrative” therapies—surfaced. Nevertheless, alternative approaches (such as acupuncture, energy psychology, equine-assisted therapy, neurofeedback, psychodrama, reiki, somatic experiencing, and massage therapy) figure prominently on the list of interventions offered by many programs. In Holistic Rehab Therapies: Are Alternative Addiction Treatments Helpful, Harmful, or Head Games? Fletcher takes a close look at alternative treatments to answer, what do such interventions add to the quality of the rehab experience? Do these therapies increase the chances of getting and staying sober? Are they worth the added expense? Could their benefit be just a placebo effect? Could some of them possibly be harmful? This Special is a companion to Inside Rehab, available in February from Viking.

Book Long Run to Glory

Download or read book Long Run to Glory written by Stephen Lane and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-09-05 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the morning of August 5, 1984, four of the greatest marathoners of all time lined up for one of the most important and long-awaited races in history. By then, they had dominated their competition for at least five years, upending a century’s worth of preconceived notions of what marathoners could do. By decade’s end, they had lowered the world record a total of 13 minutes, won 27 major marathon titles, and swept every Olympic and World Championship held in the 1980s. And, in their careers, only once did all four—American Joan Benoit, Norwegians Grete Waitz and Ingrid Kristiansen, and Portugal’s Rosa Mota—square off in the same race: at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, in the first-ever Women’s Olympic Marathon. Such was their talent that Benoit, the world record holder, entered the race as the underdog. She’d had knee surgery in April, and no one, least of all Benoit herself, was certain she could hold up for 26 miles against her three rivals. Waitz, the former world record holder, was the favorite—she had destroyed the field at the 1983 World Championships and had never lost a marathon she had finished. Kristiansen, who had beaten Waitz twice in the summer of 1984 (albeit at shorter distances), was considered the fastest woman in the race: she held world records at 5,000m and 10,000m, and would break Benoit’s marathon record in 1985. Mota had beaten Kristiansen at the 1982 European marathon championships, and was already earning a reputation for raising her level in the biggest races. This is their story, and the story of the first women’s Olympic Marathon.

Book Why We Run

  • Publisher : Harper Collins
  • Release : 2009-10-06
  • ISBN : 0061979996
  • Pages : 308 pages

Download or read book Why We Run written by Bernd Heinrich and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-10-06 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Each new page [is] more spellbinding than the one before—this is surely one of the most interesting books I’ve ever read.”—Elizabeth Marshall Thomas, author of The Hidden Life of Dogs When Bernd Heinrich decided to write a memoir of his ultramarathon running experience he realized that the preparation for the race was as important, if not more so, than the race itself. Considering the physiology and motivation of running from a scientific point of view, he wondered what he could learn from other animals. In Why We Run, Heinrich considers the flight endurance of birds, the antelope’s running prowess and limitations, and the ultra-endurance of camels to understand how human physiology can or cannot replicate these adaptations. With his characteristic blend of scientific inquiry and philosophical musings, Heinrich offers an original and provocative work combining the rigors of science with the passion of running.

Book Holistic Happiness

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert P. Vande Kappelle
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2022-06-23
  • ISBN : 1666747785
  • Pages : 179 pages

Download or read book Holistic Happiness written by Robert P. Vande Kappelle and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-06-23 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the founders of the US republic make clear in the Declaration of Independence, human beings have an unassailable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. While the meaning of these "unalienable rights" is debated, it is clear that these rights are interrelated. Concerned with these "rights," Holistic Happiness focuses on happiness, defining the purpose of life as achieving and maintaining happiness "conducive to the equitable flourishing of all." To this end, happiness should not be confused with pleasure, which is momentary and transitory, for happiness is not so much a feeling as an attitude, associated with what we call achieving meaning and purpose in life. Properly understood, happiness can be achieved, but only by inner discipline, requiring a transformation of one's outlook, attitude, and approach to life. As this book emphasizes, good health is an important foundation for happiness. However, to experience and maintain good health requires good genes, a balanced lifestyle, supportive companions, wholesome eating and drinking, regular exercise, a positive mindset, an active disposition, and good fortune. While happiness and good health are frequently disrupted by accidents, disease, stress, chemical and emotional imbalance, and numerous other factors, wellness is achievable and sustainable, but it needs balanced input from an individual's four constituent dimensions: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. In this regard, this volume is a resource for individuals seeking holistic happiness. While benefitting from recent scholarly research, Holistic Happiness is unique in content and conception and is useful for individual or group study. Each chapter concludes with questions suitable for discussion or reflection.

Book Running Throughout Time

Download or read book Running Throughout Time written by Roger Robinson and published by Meyer & Meyer Sport. This book was released on 2022-05-01 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every runner's story is part of a great tradition of running stories. Running Throughout Time tells the best and most important of them. From Atalanta, the heroic woman runner of ancient Greece—when goddesses advised on race tactics—to the new legends of Billy Mills, Joan Benoit Samuelson, and Allison Roe (the modern Atalanta), this book brings the greatest runners back to life. It's the perfect runner's bedside storybook. Colorful, dramatic, alive with human insight and period detail, these stories are also full of new discoveries. Within these pages, you will find the true story of Pheidippides and the Battle of Marathon; you will read text from the world's first newspaper report of a footrace (1719). This book uncovers important evidence of the first road races, the origins of cross-country running, and the earliest marathons, telling the true story of the origins of the marathon and just why racers must run exactly 26 miles, 385 yards (42.2 km). New light is thrown on more modern stories like the first fourminute mile and the troublesome birth of the women's marathon. All runners should read this book to really know whose footsteps they run in and why running is worthy of the effort they give to it.
