In this new, slimmed-down series of excerpts from Ryle’s masterwork, we aim to present his original message to a whole new generation. Book excerpt: This book lays out the requirements and difficulties that will come with the pursuit of holiness in our Christian lives. Ryle starts out with the way to achieve holiness and the difficulties that arise with pursuing a holy life, and then going throughout the Bible giving true examples of the cost of holiness and the rewards it brings as the Bible promises us. To often we sing and pray for such a life without being willing to undergo the necessary life changes and adjustments to get there. This book lays out what we can expect in such a journey and what God will ask of each of us to get us to the point He wants us to be.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1879, Holiness: Its Nature, Hindrances, Difficulties and Roots is a timeless classic on holiness and among the best single works on the Christian life. In this book, Bishop Ryle, being driven by a deep conviction for many years that practical holiness and entire self-consecration to God are not sufficiently attended to by modern evangelicals in the country, addresses hard and trying subjects that most modern evangelicals have chosen to ignore: the power and depth of indwelling sin, the necessity of a holy life, the struggle and fight of faith, and counting the cost of following Christ, among others.

Book excerpt: In Holiness, JC Ryle speaks to the heart and soul of every man. In a winning, approachable style, he wields the sword of the Spirit like a skillful surgeon, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow. JC Ryle addresses hard and trying subjects which most modern evangelicals have chosen to ignore: the power and depth of indwelling sin, the necessity of holiness, the struggle and fight of faith, counting the cost of following Christ... and that's only in the first 5 chapters! JC Ryle's treatment of the texts which head the chapters is based on plain interpretation, common-sense exegesis and practical application. He does not side-step the difficult issues, but takes them head on, making Christian theology and the principles of holiness seem so simple, obvious and straight-forward that readers will wonder what other Bible truths they've been missing all these years. Christian, read JC Ryle. You will not regret it. He is a man who first and foremost loved the Lord Jesus Christ. This is the vital center of all his teaching and writing and the sole reason for his great power in ministry. Whether you are an erudite scholar or a hard-laboring farmer, a pastor or a layman, a spiritual elder or a babe in Christ--no matter where you are--JC Ryle's writings on holiness are for you. The love of Christ and the faith of this great 18th century saint cling to every page like an aromatic perfume.

Book excerpt: Originally published a century and a half ago, Holiness by J.C. Ryle remains a perennial classic that challenges Christians to a life of doing and not just believing and feeling. Considered to be one of the most profound books on Christian discipleship and sanctification, Holiness reminds us how the standard of Christian living has become painfully low and challenges us to "adorn the doctrine of God our Savior" (Titus 2:10), and to make it beautiful by our daily habits and tempers. Ryle's classic work on personal holiness is a must-read for every believer who desires to become more like Jesus Christ."J.C. Tyle is an evangelical champion...one of the bravest and best of men." -C.H. Spurgeon"Ryle, like his great masters, has no easy way of holiness to offer us, and no "patent" method by which it can be attained; but he invariably produces "that hunger and thirst after righteousness" which is the only indefensible condition to being filled." -D. Martyn Lloyd-JonesJohn Charles Ryle (1816-1900) began his service to the Lord as a minister of the Gospel. He labored in parish churches within the Church of England for almost forty years. He then became Bishop of Liverpool in 1880 and came to international prominence as a preacher, Bible expositor, and author. Today he is best known for his plain and lively writings on practical and spiritual themes. He deliberately used this style to reach ordinary people. The great aim of his ministry was to encourage strong and serious Christian living. His tracts and books were published in the millions in the late 1800s. Many of these have been republished in modern times.

Book Holiness Its Nature Hindrances Difficulties and Roots Being a Series of Papers on the Subject

Download or read book Holiness Its Nature Hindrances Difficulties and Roots Being a Series of Papers on the Subject written by J. C. Ryle and published by . This book was released on 2019-02-07 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE volume now in the reader's hands is an enlarged edition of a small work which appeared several years ago, and has been kindly received by the Christian public. The present volume contains so much additional matter, that it is double the size of its predecessor. In fact, the work is half new. I venture to think that the papers contained in this volume will be found helpful by all who take interest in the subject of Scriptural holiness. I am much mistaken if they do not throw broad light on the real nature of holiness, and the temptations and difficulties which all must expect who follow it. Above all, I hope they will help to bring forward the grand truth that union with Christ is the root of holiness, and will show young believers what immense encouragement Jesus Christ holds out to all who strive to be holy. Concerning the present position of the whole subject of holiness among English Christians, I have little to add to the introductory essay which appeared in the original edition, and now follows this preface. The older I grow the more I am convinced that real practical holiness does not receive the attention it deserves, and that there is a most painfully low standard of living among many high professors of religion in the land. But, at the same time, I am increasingly convinced that the zealous efforts of some well-meaning persons to promote a higher standard of spiritual life are often not "according to knowledge," and are really calculated to do more harm than good. Let me explain what I mean. It is easy to get crowds together for what are called "Higher life" and "Consecration" meetings. Any one knows that, who has watched human nature, and read descriptions of American camp-meetings, and studied the curious phenomena of the "Religious affections." Sensational and exciting addresses by strange preachers or by women, loud singing, hot rooms, crowded tents, the constant sight of strong semi-religious feeling in the faces of all around you for several days, late hours, long protracted meetings, public profession of experience,--all this kind of thing is very interesting at the time, and seems to do good. But is the good real, deeply-rooted, solid, lasting? That is the point. And I should like to ask a few questions about it. Do those who attend these meetings become more holy, meek, unselfish, kind, good tempered, self-denying, and Christ-like at home? Do they become more content with their position in life, and more free from restless craving after something different from that which God has given them? Do fathers, mothers, husbands, and other relatives and friends, find them more pleasant and easy to live with? Can they enjoy a quiet Sunday and quiet means of grace without noise, heat, and excitement? Above all, do they grow in charity, and especially in charity towards those who do not agree with them in every jot and tittle of their religion?

This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twenty papers contained in this volume are a humble contribution to a cause which is exciting much interest in the present day-I mean the cause of scriptural holiness. It is a cause which everyone who loves Christ, and desires to advance His kingdom in the world, should endeavor to help forward. Everyone can do something and I wish to add my mite. The reader will find little that is directly controversial in these papers. I have carefully abstained from naming modern teachers and modern books. I have been content to give the result of my own study of the Bible, my own private meditations, my own prayers for light, and my own reading of old divines. If in anything I am still in error, I hope I shall be shown it before I leave the world. We all see in part, and have a treasure in earthen vessels. I trust I am willing to learn.

Book excerpt: This study guide is written in such a way that it can be used with any unabridged publication of Holiness. Even if you are working through it with a group of people, it is not necessary for everyone in the group to have the same publication of Holiness, so long as everyone's copy is unabridged. If you've already flipped through the pages of this study guide, you immediately noticed it looks a little different than other study guides you may have used. You may have even said to yourself, "Where are the blanks on which to write my answers?"Well, there are none. You're welcome to write in this study guide, if you like. It's yours, after all. But there isn't enough room for you to do all the work. That's also intentional. For this study, you are going to need a notebook or a journal or your computer (if you prefer typing). You will likely not find a single question that will allow for a one word, yes or no-type answer. In The Practice of Holiness, I don't want you to simply go find information in Ryle's book and transpose it onto an empty blank on a page. The goal isn't to pass a test or write a book report. I don't want you to regurgitate information. I want you to think.

He was renowned for his powerful preaching and extensive tracts. "Holiness (1877)- written in response to the "Higher Life" teaching of Robert Pearsall Smith, and adopted by the Keswick Movement. Gradual growth in grace, gradual growth in knowledge, gradual growth in faith, gradual growth in love, gradual growth in holiness, gradual growth in humility, gradual growth in spiritual-mindedness - all this I see clearly taught and urged in Scripture, and clearly exemplified in the lives of many of God's saints. But sudden, instantaneous leaps from conversion to entire consecration - I fail to see in the Bible!
