Book Holiness on the Move Mobility and Space in Byzantine Hagiography

Download or read book Holiness on the Move Mobility and Space in Byzantine Hagiography written by Mihail Mitrea and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-30 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Holiness on the Move: Mobility and Space in Byzantine Hagiography explores the literary, religious, and social functions of monastic mobility in Byzantine hagiography, touching on aspects of space, narrative, and identity. The ten chapters included in this volume highlight the multifaceted and rich nature of travel narratives, exploring topics such as authorship and audience, narrative structure and function, identity-making and practicalities of and discourse on travel. In terms of geographical span, the case studies cover Constantinople and its hinterland, Asia Minor, mainland Greece, Trebizond, the Balkans, and southern Italy and range chronologically from the end of the sixth to the fourteenth century. The contributions offer novel insights and perspectives on the importance of mobility in the literary construction of holiness in the Byzantine world and the wider medieval Mediterranean, the spatial dimension of sacred mobility, and the ways in which mobility is employed in the narrative construction of hagiographical texts. As such, the volume joins the burgeoning research on sacred mobilities and will interest students and scholars of Byzantine and medieval literature, religion, and history, as well as a wider readership with an interest in the study of space and mobility.

Book Holy Jumpers

  • Author : William Kostlevy
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2010-05-19
  • ISBN : 9780199703364
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book Holy Jumpers written by William Kostlevy and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-05-19 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking book, William Kostlevy presents a fascinating study of the Metropolitan Church Association (MCA), a religious community founded in Chicago in the early 1890s. The MCA was one of the most controversial societies of the era. Its members were called "jumpers" because of their acrobatic worship style, and "Burning Bushers" after their caustic periodical, the Burning Bush. They objected to the concept of private property, rejected "elite" denominations, and professed an alternative, radical vision of Christianity, using modern music and folk art to spread their message. A product of the holiness revival of the late nineteenth century and a catalyst for Pentecostalism, the MCA played a vital role in the twentieth century growth of evangelical Christianity, yet it has long been ignored in studies of American radicalism, of communal societies, and even of holiness and Pentecostal Christianity. Kostlevy rectifies this omission, providing a valuable new context for understanding the origins of Pentecostalism. He investigates the internal struggles of the Holiness Movement, showing how radically divergent theological currents came to dominate a major segment of the American evangelical community. He also shows how deeply the MCA impacted the lives of twentieth century evangelists Bud Robinson and Seth C. Rees, self-designated first woman bishop Alma White, and Pentecostal evangelists A. G. Garr and Glenn Cook. As Holy Jumpers demonstrates, Holiness Christians, and the MCA in particular, played a profoundly formative role in the development of modern evangelical and Pentecostal Christianity.

Book Understanding The Doctrines of Strategic Holiness Volume 1 The Doctrine of Strategic Components of Holiness

Download or read book Understanding The Doctrines of Strategic Holiness Volume 1 The Doctrine of Strategic Components of Holiness written by Nkemzi Theodore A and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Holy Bible clearly teaches that God Almighty is "Righteous in all His ways and Holy in all His works" (Psalms 145:17). The Word of God makes it abundantly clear that "as he (God Almighty) which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy" (1 Peter 1:15(a)) "because it is written, Be ye holy, for I am holy" (1 Peter 1:16). The Holy Bible is crystal clear (in Second Thessalonians 4:7) that every born again believer has been called unto "Holiness without which no man shall see The Lord" (Hebrews 12:14(b)). You (as a born again believer) have been called to serve The Lord in Righteousness and Holiness all the days of your life here on earth (Luke 1:74-75). Therefore, it's incumbent upon you to understand that when you are saved or born again (John 3:3-6), you are then to walk on "the way of Holiness" to Heaven (Isaiah 35:8) which, indeed, is the narrow way to Heaven: "13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it" (Matthew 7:13-14). As you study this book, may you be among the few Righteous in these last days (Revelation 3:4) who are walking on the narrow way of Holiness to Heaven in The Mighty Name of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. This is Holiness Unto The Lord Study Text. It's Volume One in the Series. Understanding the Doctrines of Strategic Holiness. It's entitled: The Doctrines of Strategic Components of Holiness. In this Volume: Misconceptions concerning Holiness are explained, The Doctrine of Strategic Components of Holiness is examined, Satan's Deadly Strategic Doctrines (against Holiness) are briefly examined, The Doctrine of Strategic Components of Inner Holiness is stated, 20 Strategic Components of Inner Holiness are examined, The Doctrine of Strategic Components of Outer Holiness is stated, 40 Strategic Components of Outer Holiness are examined, and 60 Holiness Tests are stated. The Goal of this book is to prepare you for Heaven (Hebrews 12:14(b)). In this respect, our prayer is that after having studied it you shall repent and forsake unrighteousness and un-holiness and shall begin to serve Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ wholeheartedly in Righteousness and "Holiness without which no man shall see The Lord" (Hebrews 12:14(b)).

Book My Life Born in Free Tibet Served in Exile

Download or read book My Life Born in Free Tibet Served in Exile written by Tashi Wangdi and published by Library of Tibetan Works and Archives. This book was released on 2024-06-17 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tashi Wangdi devoted his life to serve His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan people in their peaceful and nonviolent struggle for truth, justice and freedom. He paints a riveting account of his life, starting with his happy childhood in Tibet, which was shattered in 1959, following the Chinese Communist invasion. After fleeing with his family to India, he was among the initial group of 25 students to be educated at the first school His Holiness established, soon after arriving in India. He dedicated the next 40 years of his life to the Tibetan cause, rising to the top leadership ranks in the Tibetan government in exile, serving as the Minister of 6 different portfolios and also as His Holiness' Representative in New Delhi, New York and Brussels. His detailed and fascinating first-hand account covers many seminal moments in the history of the Tibetan people in exile, including the beginnings of a nascent Tibetan government in exile, its negotiations with the Chinese government, and His Holiness receiving international recognition with the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize, the US Congressional Gold Medal, and Honorary Canadian Citizenship, among others.

Book prayer and holiness

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 136 pages

Download or read book prayer and holiness written by Zacharias Tanee Fomum and published by ZTF Books Online. This book was released on with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The holiness of God demands that anything that Jesus would not have prayed about is not prayed. The question then arises, how does a child of God know for sure what to ask for in prayer that will receive divine probation? Secondly, who is qualified to pray? The author, Professor Z.T. Fomum, goes into great depth to provide not only a succinct answer to these questions but also outlining the basic prerequisites to prayer. He states that: Prayer and Holiness are two sides of the same coin. Prayer is holy business with a Holy God. In prayer one touches the holiness of God and the God of holiness. Praying with sin in one’s life is self-destruction and far worse than prayerlessness. Prayer and Holiness is an outstanding down-to-earth university-level course on prayer. In it, the author brings to light the difference between obeying God and pleasing God with regards to prayer, highlighting what goes into pleasing God. As you pick up this book, be prepared for deep transformations and a rerouting in what you have practiced as prayer thus far. Welcome to the sphere of practical spiritual warfare with guaranteed answers to all your prayers.
