Book Phenomenal Blackness

Download or read book Phenomenal Blackness written by Mark Christian Thompson and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2022-01-21 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unorthodox account of 1960s Black thought rigorously details the field’s debts to German critical theory and explores a forgotten tradition of Black singularity. Phenomenal Blackness examines the changing interdisciplinary investments of key mid-century Black writers and thinkers, including the growing interest in German philosophy and critical theory. Mark Christian Thompson analyzes this shift in intellectual focus across the post-war decades, placing Black Power thought in a philosophical context. Prior to the 1960s, sociologically oriented thinkers such as W. E. B. Du Bois had understood Blackness as a singular set of socio-historical characteristics. In contrast, writers such as Amiri Baraka, James Baldwin, Angela Y. Davis, Eldridge Cleaver, and Malcolm X were drawn to notions of an African essence, an ontology of Black being. With these perspectives, literary language came to be seen as the primary social expression of Blackness. For this new way of thinking, the works of philosophers such as Adorno, Habermas, and Marcuse were a vital resource, allowing for continued cultural-materialist analysis while accommodating the hermeneutical aspects of Black religious thought. Thompson argues that these efforts to reimagine Black singularity led to a phenomenological understanding of Blackness—a “Black aesthetic dimension” wherein aspirational models for Black liberation might emerge.

Book The Day Before It Rained

Download or read book The Day Before It Rained written by Rich Rubin and published by Gatekeeper Press. This book was released on 2023-10-11 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Day Before It Rained is an eclectic collection of short stories ranging from quirky portraits to tales of LGBTQ+ relationships; plus eccentric takes on friendship, romance, and everything in between. Whether period pieces or modern day works, from the magical to the mundane, from the heart of Kansas to the Yorkshire moors or the Tunisian desert, the stories span the years, travel the globe, and explore the spectrum of emotions. The author’s characters discover love, loss, hope, and fear—in other words, the dubious joy of being human. Book Review 1: “Rich Rubin is a traveler. He’s a wanderer. These stories are like buying coffee at an untried deli on a crisp overcast day in New York City. There’s something small, perfect, private about them. Bundle up and take the walk.” — Playwright/screenwriter Daniel Talbott Book Review 2: “Rubin’s acute powers of observation create vivid scenes populated with indelible characters. I wanted to meet them all.” — Patricia Harris, Boston Globe correspondent and author of New England’s Notable Women Book Review 3: "Witty, charming, engaging, and thought-provoking, The Day Before It Rained is not just a collection of short stories. It is an examination of what it means to be human, and how we can still find joy and connection in the simplest moments of life." — Frank Schierloh, writer and critic, queer-reviewed.com Book Review 4: “Rich Rubin’s mellifluous prose reminds me of a good Islay single malt — smoky and strong and best taken in small sips to savor the complexity.” — David Lyon, co-founder of Lynx House Press and author of The Sound of Horns

Book Elements of Christian Thought

Download or read book Elements of Christian Thought written by Eugene F. Rogers, Jr. and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spring of 2020, as the coronavirus pandemic disrupted classrooms around the world, teachers scrambled to convert their lectures and presentations into a format more conducive to online and distance learning. For Eugene Rogers, this meant transcribing as closely as possible the spoken lectures that have made his Introduction to Christian Thought course at UNC Greensboro, a course he has taught some forty times, justly famous. The result is this book: an insightful, winsome, and engaging introduction to the history of Christian thought by a teacher at the height of his craft. For Rogers, the history of Christian thought is the story of a language--it's "Christianese," if you will--that participants use to frame their agreements and their disagreements alike. From Anselm to Wyschogrod, Rogers introduces us to the most interesting speakers of Christianese and their importance, enabling us to both listen in on and take part in the living conversation about God's activity in and for our world.

Although very funny, Ijamama Speaks presents meaningful lessons about rightful living and quality living through dialogues of host Ijamama with her diverse TV guests.
