Book Hole Burning in the Vibrational Spectrum of Crystals and Glasses

Download or read book Hole Burning in the Vibrational Spectrum of Crystals and Glasses written by A. J. Sievers and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Persistent IR spectral holes can be generated in the vibrational degrees of freedom of small molecules matrix isolated in crystals and glasses even though no electronic excitation is involved, i.e., a non-photochemical process. The union of the IR lead salt diode laser and broad band FT interferometric methods has produced a new high resolution spectroscopic technique for investigating both the statics and dynamics of molecules in solids. These low power single mode diode lasers (approx. 10 to 100 microwatts) provide a near ideal cw source for investigating persistent IR spectral holes (PIRSHs). They can be produced and probed with a single laser, focused to an intensity at the sample typically up to 100 mW/cm 2. Persistent spectral changes which occur far from the laser line can be monitored with an FTS probe beam at 60 MHz resolution.

Book Persistent Spectral Hole Burning Science and Applications

Download or read book Persistent Spectral Hole Burning Science and Applications written by William E. Moerner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost fifteen years have now elapsed since the first observations of per sistent spectral hole-burning in inhomogeneously broadened absorption lines in solids. The fact that the spectral shape of an inhomogeneously broadened line can be locally modified for long periods of time has led to a large number of investigations of low-temperature photophysics and photochemistry that would not have been possible otherwise. Using hole burning, important information has been obtained about a variety of in teractions, including excited-state dephasing processes, host-guest dynam ics, proton tunnelling, low-frequency excitation in amorphous hosts, relaxation mechanisms for vibrational modes, photochemical mechanisms at liquid helium temperatures, and external field perturbations. At the same time, the possibility that persistent spectral holes might be used to store digital information has led to the study of materials and configura tions for frequency-domain optical storage and related possible applica tions. This is the first full-length book on persistent spectral hole-burning. The goal is to provide a broadly based survey of the scientific principles and applications of persistent spectral hole-burning. Since the topic is quite interdisciplinary, the book is intended for researchers, graduate stu dents, and advanced undergraduates in the fields of chemical physics, solid-state physics, laser spectroscopy, solid-state photochemistry, and high-performance optical storage and optical processing.

Book Persistent Spectral Hole Burning Science and Applications

Download or read book Persistent Spectral Hole Burning Science and Applications written by G.C. Bjorklund and published by Springer. This book was released on 1988-02-29 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the underlying scientific fundamentals and principal phenomena associated with persistent spectral hole-burning in solids, and presents an overview of possible future applications to optical storage of digital data and optical signal processing. Organization of the material is by the general physical mechanism responsible for the formation of persistent spectral holes. After a description of the basic principles and methods of hole-burning, with examples from photochemical processes in crystalline and amorphous hosts, the unusual proton tunneling phenomena that occur in hydrogen-bonded polymers and glasses are described. Persistent spectral hole-burning in inorganic materials due either to photoionization or to photophysical effects is then summarized, followed by a detailed discussion of nonphotochemical hole-burning mechanisms for electronic transitions in amorphous solids. The book concludes with a description of potential applications to data storage and optical processsing using frequency-domain, holographic, and electric field techniques. Readers of this volume will gain a detailed appreciation of both the generality of the persistent spectral hole-burning phenomenon and the power of the technique in studying microscopic dynamics and mechanisms of phototransformation in low-temperature solids.

Book Spectroscopy of Crystals Containing Rare Earth Ions

Download or read book Spectroscopy of Crystals Containing Rare Earth Ions written by A.A. Kaplyanskii and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 767 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ``Spectroscopy of Crystals Containing Rare Earth Ions'' contains chapters on some key problems selected from a broad range of spectroscopic studies of RE-activated solids including both crystalline and glassy materials. Progress in crystal field theory is surveyed, an area which is basic to our understanding of the energy levels. The treatment of dynamical properties includes studies of coherence phenomena in isolated ions, energy transfer between ions and co-operative phenomena associated with ion-ion and ion-lattice interactions. In addition, the role of electron spins and nuclear spins is studied by light scattering and double resonance techniques. The presence of inhomogeneous broadening of spectral lines is observed and studied in many contexts, leading to new insights into general problems of the disordered state. Considerable attention is devoted to describing new experimental techniques whose development is of prime importance for progress in the spectroscopy of RE-activated solids. Many of these rely on the development and application of tunable lasers. At the moment this is a very active field of spectroscopy with more exciting developments likely to occur in the future.

Book Laser Optics of Condensed Matter

Download or read book Laser Optics of Condensed Matter written by J. Birman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Third Binational USA-USSR Symposium titled "Laser Optics of Con densed Matter" was held in Leningrad 1 June - 5 June 1987. This volume con tains the full text of 64 papers presented at (or prepared for) the Symposium in both plenary and poster sessions. This Symposium reestablished the very productive series of "Light Scattering" Binational Symposia which were initi ated in Moscow in 1975. Unfortunately there was an eight-year hiatus follow ing the Second Symposium in New York (1979). This interval, caused by serious chilling of the climate of USA-USSR collaboration, deprived the active scien tists on both sides of the opportunity to meet and interact in the active format of a conference. During this eight year interval there has been very rapid and intense development of scientific activity in the general area of laser optics phe nomena. The development of ultrafast laser sources has permitted rapid advances in time resolved spectroscopy and ultrafast processes; the field of optical bistability and strong nonlinearity became a hot topic; and intense work is now underway to clarify ideas of photon localization. These new dev elopments complement many advances in the study of low dimensional systems such as surfaces, new work on phase transitions, and novel studies of elemen tary excitations such as polariton-excitons in localized environments such as quantum wells and heterojunctions.
