Book excerpt: This is another book about hockey. But this one is unique. It contains many stories by and about individuals who broadcast play-by-plays of major junior and provincial junior A games from arenas across Canada. There are even a few chapters about broadcasters from teams in the United States that play in Canadian leagues. There are major junior chapters from the Western Hockey League (WHL), the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). Chapters from provincial junior A leagues include British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and the Maritimes. Some of the contributors for this book wrote their own chapters. Others preferred to be interviewed. In all cases, the final version of each chapter was approved by the contributor. The chapters include many descriptions of broadcasters experiences. They describe their early experiences with hockey. Some played, while others listened on the radio, watched on TV, or attended games. The stories include how they became involved as play-by-play broadcasters and who were direct or indirect mentors. Each broadcaster recounts their memories of the first game they called. They also describe some of the notable players, coaches, and color commentators. Where possible, there are even some bus stories. Each chapter concludes with a comment about what the experience of broadcasting play-by-play has meant to each individual.

Book Black Sports Heroes

Download or read book Black Sports Heroes written by MORRIE TURNER and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2011-11-02 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the 1936 Olympic Games in Germany, Jesse Owens won gold medals in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, and the 400-meter relay—and Adolph Hitler scrambled from his private box to avoid honoring the black athlete. During World War II, Joe Louis, heavyweight champion of the world, paid surprise visits to military hospitals. Though he later lost his title belt to the German Max Schmeling (which greatly pleased Hitler), when Louis died, broke, Schmeling used his wealth to pay for Louis’s funeral. In the 1971 World Series, Roberto Clemete posted the greatest single performance by any player ever, making two impossible catches in the outfield, batting .414, and hitting seven singles, two doubles, one triple, and two homeruns. Clemente died the next year in a plane crash while flying relief supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. Stories like these are testaments to the power of athletics to influence and inspire people, nations, and cultures. In Black Sports Heroes: Past and Present, author and cartoonist Morrie Turner skillfully presents cartoons and stories, known and unknown, about black athletes of all nations and the impact they had upon their sport and their world. Through his impressive combination of humor and fact, Turner brings “kid power” and “rainbow power” to life, showing us a world where all people, regardless of racial, religious, sexual, or physical differences, can live, learn, work, and play together.

Book A Helluva Life in Hockey

Download or read book A Helluva Life in Hockey written by Brian McFarlane and published by ECW Press. This book was released on 2021-10-12 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A captivating memoir from Canada’s foremost hockey historian and a beloved NHL commentator It’s been 85 years since Brian McFarlane first laced a pair of skates and tested the black ice on a tiny pond. And then he discovered the joy of hockey. Ultimately, there would be grade school hockey, high school hockey, junior hockey, college hockey, and, miraculously, two decades with the NHL Oldtimers anchoring his life. He was the rank amateur playing on a line with the Big M and Norm Ullman, facing off against icons like Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay at Maple Leaf Gardens — even scoring a goal. He suited up at the Montreal Forum, elbow-to-elbow against John Ferguson, before thousands of fans. (There was even a stint with the Flying Fathers who ordained him a “Bishop” after a hat trick.) Off the ice, in 1960, McFarlane was the first Canadian to be a commentator on CBS’s coverage of the NHL. He also survived 25 years of Hockey Night in Canada — despite confrontations with Punch Imlach, Harold Ballard, Bobby Hull, and Eddie Shack. Now, in this revealing autobiography, he remembers it all. For Brian McFarlane, it has been a helluva life in hockey.

Book Hockey Sucks Let s Fix It

Download or read book Hockey Sucks Let s Fix It written by Michael Munro and published by Blue Swell Books. This book was released on 2017-10-10 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The game of hockey has drastically changed over the past two decades and not for the better. Gone are the days of goal scorers, stick handlers, tough guys and passers. When they left so did the excitement and the unexpected. Now it is a game played by drones in exactly the same fashion by every team. Former hockey reporter Michael Munro examines the impact manufactured hockey players are having on the National Hockey League and its feeder systems. In this Western based critique Munro explains how the NHL ended up eliminating goal scorers and entertainers with a series of rule changes and management decisions. And it is a discussion of how Canada lost its role as the dominant hockey nation and started developing only supporting players and not lead actors. An honest and sometimes disturbing 250 page essay that is a must read for anyone who loves hockey and wants to see it become a global success.
