Book The Latehomecomer

Download or read book The Latehomecomer written by Kao Kalia Yang and published by Coffee House Press. This book was released on 2010-12-15 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In search of a place to call home, thousands of Hmong families made the journey from the war-torn jungles of Laos to the overcrowded refugee camps of Thailand and onward to America. But lacking a written language of their own, the Hmong experience has been primarily recorded by others. Driven to tell her family’s story after her grandmother’s death, The Latehomecomer is Kao Kalia Yang’s tribute to the remarkable woman whose spirit held them all together. It is also an eloquent, firsthand account of a people who have worked hard to make their voices heard. Beginning in the 1970s, as the Hmong were being massacred for their collaboration with the United States during the Vietnam War, Yang recounts the harrowing story of her family’s captivity, the daring rescue undertaken by her father and uncles, and their narrow escape into Thailand where Yang was born in the Ban Vinai Refugee Camp. When she was six years old, Yang’s family immigrated to America, and she evocatively captures the challenges of adapting to a new place and a new language. Through her words, the dreams, wisdom, and traditions passed down from her grandmother and shared by an entire community have finally found a voice. Together with her sister, Kao Kalia Yang is the founder of a company dedicated to helping immigrants with writing, translating, and business services. A graduate of Carleton College and Columbia University, Yang has recently screened The Place Where We Were Born, a film documenting the experiences of Hmong American refugees. Book Voice and Agency

Download or read book Voice and Agency written by Jeni Klugman and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite recent advances in important aspects of the lives of girls and women, pervasive challenges remain. These challenges reflect widespread deprivations and constraints and include epidemic levels of gender-based violence and discriminatory laws and norms that prevent women from owning property, being educated, and making meaningful decisions about their own lives--such as whether and when to marry or have children. These often violate their most basic rights and are magnified and multiplied by poverty and lack of education. This groundbreaking book distills vast data and hundreds of studies to shed new light on deprivations and constraints facing the voice and agency of women and girls worldwide, and on the associated costs for individuals, families, communities, and global development. The volume presents major new findings about the patterns of constraints and overlapping deprivations and focuses on several areas key to women s empowerment: freedom from violence, sexual and reproductive health and rights, ownership of land and housing, and voice and collective action. It highlights promising reforms and interventions from around the world and lays out an urgent agenda for governments, civil society, development agencies, and other stakeholders, including a call for greater investment in data and knowledge to benchmark progress.

Book Culture Ethics and Advance Care Planning

Download or read book Culture Ethics and Advance Care Planning written by Alissa Hurwitz Swota and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2009 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set against a backdrop of cultural diversity, the current emphasis on advance care planning, both in the United States and abroad, necessitates a sourcebook on how to navigate such complex terrain. This book will serve as a guide to best practice for advance care planning in a multicultural society. Such a guide will help those trying to engage in the often delicate discussions that take place during advance care planning to do so in a culturally sensitive manner. In addition, the book will provide general guidance in discussing difficult issues in a multicultural clinical setting. Given how entrenched advance care planning is in the medical context, to not attempt to engage in the process in a culturally sensitive way smacks of a dangerous indifference and sets the stage for conflict where calm could exist. In the fast-paced world of clinical medicine, recognizing and acknowledging differences in worldviews is often overlooked. When dealing with the delicate issues broached in advance care planning, such oversights can lead to deep rifts within the health care provider-patient relationship. This damage can be irreparable. By providing guidance to those engaged in such endeavors and setting advance care planning in a global context, health care practitioners will be better able to care for their patients and achieve the noble goal of advance care planning_giving volume to the voice of the patient in the last chapter of her life.

Book Family Planning Programs and Contraceptive Practice in Khao I Dang and Ban Vinai Refugee Camps

Download or read book Family Planning Programs and Contraceptive Practice in Khao I Dang and Ban Vinai Refugee Camps written by Nopphawan Čhongwatthanā and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a report of a survey on Family Planning Programs and Contraceptive Practice in Khao I Dang and Ban Vinai Refugee Camps. The broad objective of the study was to provide more complete information on knowledge, attitude and practice of family planning among women refugees for programme officials. One of the specific objectives was to investigate the fertility history of ever-married women after their arrival in a camp where family-planning services were available. Another was to evaluate the effectiveness of family-planning media in gaining the acceptance of contraception among ever-married women residing in the camps. The introduction to the report gives statistics on the number of refugees in centres in Thailand and the yearly arrivals and departures in different programmes. The report contains background information on the studied camps as well as general information on the refugees in the camp. It also describes the health and family-planning services in the camps, including traditional contraceptive medicine. The report then presents the six parts of the questionnaire: household record; socio-economic and demographic background of ever-married women and their husbands; decision-making on childbearing and family planning; family planning. The findings of the survey are shown in tables and commented upon within the report.
