Book Mix Design Practices for Warm Mix Asphalt

Download or read book Mix Design Practices for Warm Mix Asphalt written by Ramon Francis Bonaquist and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2011 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 691: Mix Design Practices for Warm-Mix Asphalt explores a mix design method tailored to the unique material properties of warm mix asphalt technologies. Warm mix asphalt (WMA) refers to asphalt concrete mixtures that are produced at temperatures approximately 50°F (28°C) or more cooler than typically used in the production of hot mix asphalt (HMA). The goal of WMA is to produce mixtures with similar strength, durability, and performance characteristics as HMA using substantially reduced production temperatures. There are important environmental and health benefits associated with reduced production temperatures including lower greenhouse gas emissions, lower fuel consumption, and reduced exposure of workers to asphalt fumes. Lower production temperatures can also potentially improve pavement performance by reducing binder aging, providing added time for mixture compaction, and allowing improved compaction during cold weather paving. Appendices to NCHRP Report 691 include the following. Appendices A, B, and D are included in the printed and PDF version of the report. Appendices C and E are available only online.

Book Use of J band to Improve the Performance of the HMA Longitudinal Joint

Download or read book Use of J band to Improve the Performance of the HMA Longitudinal Joint written by R.Christopher Williams and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The density and air void content of asphalt mixtures affect the durability and performance of asphalt pavements. Pavement longitudinal joints typically have a lower density than the mat because they receive less compaction than the center section of the mat for various reasons. The higher air void percentages resulting from lower densities can lead to high permeability and allow water infiltration, which in turn can cause moisture-induced damage and decrease base and subbase support to the pavement, reducing pavement life. Void-reducing asphalt membrane (VRAM) has been used at the longitudinal joints of asphalt pavements to achieve higher densities and prevent moisture infiltration, thereby reducing deterioration at the longitudinal joints. VRAM is applied before the hot-mix asphalt (HMA) layer is placed and migrates into the HMA to fill 50% to 70% of the air voids. This research evaluated the extent to which J-Band, a VRAM product, increases density and improves performance. Field cores were collected from two sections, one with and one without VRAM. Asphalt mixture performance tests, including disk compact tension and semi-circular bend tests, and push-pull tests were carried out in the laboratory on the field-collected specimens. Volumetric measurements were also taken, and ground penetrating radar was used in the field. It was determined that the pavement sections with VRAM had a lower permeability, higher bond energy, and higher fracture energy than the pavement sections without VRAM.

Book Assessment of the Impact of Fiber Types on the Performance of Fiber Reinforced Hot Mix Asphalt

Download or read book Assessment of the Impact of Fiber Types on the Performance of Fiber Reinforced Hot Mix Asphalt written by Christopher J. DeCarlo and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study aims to evaluate the impact of fiber types on the performance of hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures. Specifically, the impacts of fiber type on HMA mix design and laboratory performance are investigated. Four types of fiber (fiberglass, basalt, carbon, and polyolefin/aramid blend) were used to produce four fiber-reinforced HMA mixes, and a control mix without fibers was also prepared. The fiber dosage rates used in this study were 0.16% (fiberglass, basalt, and carbon) and 0.05% (polyolefin/aramid) by total mixture weight, based on manufacturer recommendations. Two mixing procedures for introducing fibers into HMA were also evaluated: dry and 15-s dispersion methods. The dry method involved mixing the fibers with aggregates before the addition of asphalt binder while the 15-s dispersion method involved adding the fibers into the mix every 15 seconds (as aggregates were coated by asphalt binder during the mixing process). All the HMA mixtures (unreinforced and fiber-reinforced) were then subjected to several different laboratory performance tests: dynamic complex modulus, Cantabro durability, asphalt pavement analyzer, flow number, and indirect tensile strength. Analysis of variance was conducted to evaluate statistically the impact of fibers on mix performance. Results showed that fibers affected the volumetric properties, mix durability, and rutting resistance of HMA mixes. It was also found that the process for introducing fibers into the mix (i.e., mixing method) affected the consistency of fiber-reinforced HMA samples. Overall, the results of this study showed that the use of fibers improved the rutting and durability performance of asphalt mixtures in the laboratory.

Book A Performance related Specification for Hot mixed Asphalt

Download or read book A Performance related Specification for Hot mixed Asphalt written by and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2011 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 704: A Performance-Related Specification for Hot-Mixed Asphalt provides a proposed performance-related specification (PRS) for hot-mix asphalt (HMA) in the form of the Microsoft Windows-based Quality-Related Specification Software (QRSS). The QRSS is a stand-alone program for Microsoft Windows (versions XP and 7) that employs a database of pre-solved solutions of the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide. The program is capable of (1) calculating the predicted rutting, fatigue cracking, and low-temperature (thermal) cracking of an HMA pavement from the mix volumetric and binder and aggregate properties of the as-designed HMA (typically the job mix formula) and (2) comparing them with predictions calculated from the contractor's lot or sub-lot quality assurance data for the same properties.

Book Performance Survey on Open graded Friction Course Mixes

Download or read book Performance Survey on Open graded Friction Course Mixes written by Gerald Huber and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2000 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to pavement construction, maintenance, design, and materials engineers; pavement contractors; and others interested in the use of open-graded friction course (OGFC) mixes. It describes the current state of the practice on the use of OGFC mixes, including information regarding design, materials, construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation strategies. Alternative treatments to traditional OGFC are also identified and discussed. Information was collected by surveying U.S. and Canadian transportation agencies and by conducting a literature search to gather additional insight into North American and European practices. This TRB report describes the recent performance of North American OGFC mixes and European porous asphalt by identifying benefits and stress indicators. A new generation of OGFC mixes has evolved over the last 5 years with changes that have been reported to dramatically improve performance. This synthesis describes new materials and design methods being used, as well as the applicability of the new generation of open-graded mixtures to North American use.
