Book HKCEE English Language School based Assessment

Download or read book HKCEE English Language School based Assessment written by Wai Kei Fok and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although school-based assessment (SBA) is a well established assessment practice in many countries, its use has been limited in Hong Kong until recently. When the scheme was extended to HKCEE English Language, it was faced with strong opposition. Many teachers felt that they did not understand the scheme and were negative about its use and increased workload. With a view that any change in education is a process that involves people and thus its success depends largely on the perception, readiness and implementation of the people who actually carry out the change, a study is proposed to examine teachers' perception, readiness and uses of the SBA scheme. A total of ninety-five Hong Kong teachers who taught HKCEE English Language from twenty-one schools were invited to complete a questionnaire based on a revised Stages of Concerns Questionnaire (SoCQ) and among them, eight teachers were selected to participate in an in-depth semi-structured interview to explore their perceptions, uses and evaluations of the scheme and to gauge their Levels of Use (LoU) in the innovation. The findings indicate that the teachers did not give the scheme a high priority in their teaching work although many had quite strong opinions to offer. In general, they had high early concerns (informational, personal and management concerns) and the concerns profile was similar to that of nonusers and early users. The in-depth interviews show that the majority of the interviewees had proceeded beyond routine use, including two teachers who had run the scheme for only one year. It also finds considerable variations on the way the SBA scheme was operated and a few practices were in violation of the SBA criteria set by the authorities. Implications for teachers, policy-makers and researchers on school innovations arising from findings are discussed.

Book School Based Assessment in English

Download or read book School Based Assessment in English written by Clavia T. Williams-mcbean and published by . This book was released on 2017-09 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This workbook was designed based on the guidelines outlined in the amended CXC CSEC English syllabus effective for the May - June 2018 examinations. It was developed in response to requests of teachers and students to have resources, validated by CXC, to assist them in completing the SBA. The activities in this Workbook will allow the teachers to more efficiently and effectively integrate the SBA in every day classroom activities. At the end of each group meeting, there is a Group Meeting Participation Form for students to complete. This form allows the teacher to monitor what happens outside the classroom as well. It also allows the students to have evidence to support their declarations in discussing their individual participation and group participation. The Workbook also incorporates activities which will help students to successfully complete the required tasks. The activities scaffold the thinking that will be required to complete the final tasks. The step by step approach makes the overall process easier. Finally, the Workbook contains sample SBAs. One is used as a working example to show how each task is supposed to be completed. The working sample also includes guidelines for completion. The other sample at the end of the Workbook was included to give students a clearer idea of how their final portfolio should be compiled. It was also included to show how students can work within the same theme/issue/topic/event and write the same written report but have different individual pieces. The SBA component provides a unique opportunity for students to improve their competence and achievement in English. It is my hope that School Based Assessment in English: A guide and workbook for students will make that opportunity more a reality.

Book Student Perspectives on Assessment

Download or read book Student Perspectives on Assessment written by Dennis M. McInerney and published by IAP. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assessment for learning is meant to engage, motivate, and enable students to do better in their learning. However, how students themselves perceive assessments (both high-stakes qualifications and low-stakes monitoring) is not well understood. This volume collects research studies from Europe, North and South America, Asia, and New Zealand that have deliberately focused on how students in primary, secondary, and tertiary education conceive of, experience, understand, and evaluate assessments. Assessment for learning has assumed that formative assessments and classroom practices would be an unqualified success in terms of student learning outcomes. Making use of a variety of qualitatively interpreted focus groups, observations, and interviews and factor-analytic survey methods, the studies collected in this volume raise doubts as to the validity of this formulation. We commend this volume to readers hoping to stimulate their own thinking and research in the area of student assessment. We believe the chapters will challenge researchers, policy makers, teacher educators, and instructors as to how assessment for learning can be implemented.

Book excerpt: Assessing English Language Proficiency in U.S. K–12 Schools offers comprehensive background information about the generation of standards-based, English language proficiency (ELP) assessments used in U.S. K–12 school settings. The chapters in this book address a variety of key issues involved in the development and use of those assessments: defining an ELP construct driven by new academic content and ELP standards, using technology for K–12 ELP assessments, addressing the needs of various English learner (EL) students taking the assessments, connecting assessment with teaching and learning, and substantiating validity claims. Each chapter also contains suggestions for future research that will contribute to the next generation of K–12 ELP assessments and improve policies and practices in the use of the assessments. • Pages : 222 pages

Download or read book Assessment for Learning written by Rita Berry and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2008-09-01 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assessment is an important part of effective teaching and learning. It allows achievements to be recognized and helps both teachers and learners to reflect on and review their performance and progress. While assessment has long been an end-of-learning activity to measure what learners can do, the outcome-oriented approach does not always foster learning motivation effectively. A new perspective now encourages ongoing appraisal in the classroom to improve learning. This book reflects current thinking of assessment with a stated focus on assessment for learning (AfL). It informs teachers about the latest developments and provides teachers with important tools for integrating assessment in the classroom. The discussions on assessment theories are in-depth and the examples used for illustrating the concepts are plentiful.
