This book was released on 2012-03-20 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modern understanding of climate extremes in the vast Pacific Ocean has been hampered by an incomplete picture of the incidence of such extremes in the past. For the first time in this book is given a largely complete account of extreme events – tropical cyclones (hurricanes) and droughts – culled from a myriad of sources, ranging from whalers’ logs to missionary diaries, as far back in time as written records extend. This book is an essential reference for anyone interested in the nature and recurrence times of climate extremes in the Pacific Ocean. It also provides fascinating insights into the historical impacts of extreme events on often highly vulnerable island populations and livelihoods and, in doing so, underscores their continuing vulnerability as they confront 21st-century climate change.

  • Author : Julian P. Hume

  • Pages : 560 pages

Download or read book Extinct Birds written by Julian P. Hume and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-08-24 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extinct Birds was the first comprehensive review of the hundreds of the bird species and subspecies that have become extinct over the last 1,000 years of habitat degradation, over-hunting and rat introduction. It has become the standard text on this subject, covering both familiar icons of extinction as well as more obscure birds, some known from just one specimen or from travellers' tales. This second edition is expanded to include dozens of new species, as more are constantly added to the list, either through extinction or through new subfossil discoveries. Extinct Birds is the result of decades of research into literature and museum drawers, as well as caves and subfossil deposits, which often reveal birds long-gone that disappeared without ever being recorded by scientists while they lived. From Greak Auks, Carolina Parakeets and Dodos to the amazing yet almost completely vanished bird radiations of Hawaii and New Zealand via rafts of extinction in the Pacific and elsewhere, this book is both a sumptuous reference and astounding testament to humanity's devastating impact on wildlife.

Book Crystal Prescriptions

Download or read book Crystal Prescriptions written by Judy Hall and published by John Hunt Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-30 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This directory provides all you need to know about crystals for the chakras, subtle energy bodies and raising kundalini. There are many more chakras than the conventional seven that have traditionally been in use. As the frequency of the human organism is raised, additional chakras are opening up to assimilate higher dimensional energy. This frequency uplift, and overall well-being, can be facilitated by stimulating the rise of kundalini energy, which in turn can be activated with appropriate crystals. However, spontaneous kundalini awakening can be overwhelming. Fortunately crystals have the answer. This new directory in the A-Z series assists you to identify exactly the right crystal to release any blockages and return the chakras to a state of equilibrium. This will enable the higher chakras to open and controlled kundalini rise to occur.

Book White Shadows in the South Seas

Book excerpt: Lloyd, a drunken, demoralized white doctor who defends a tribe of Marquesan natives against the greed of Sebastian, an unscrupulous trader, is unjustly accused of a crime and tied to the wheel of a plagued ship that is set adrift. The vessel is wrecked in a typhoon, and Lloyd is washed ashore on an island where the natives, who have never seen a white man before, revere him as a god. Sebastian's trading schooner anchors offshore, and Lloyd pleads with the natives to keep Sebastian and his men off the island; the natives do not heed his advice, however, and Lloyd is shot to death by one of Sebastian's crew. With Lloyd out of the way, Sebastian is free to set up a trading post, cheating the natives and ruining their lives with bad whiskey.
