Book excerpt: This book explores the thoroughly human dimension of the health care and prevention responses to the HIV crisis in the UK, and the impact that such initiatives had on the progression of the epidemic. This book presents a compelling account of the unfolding of the epidemic and the initiatives that made all the difference in the care and prevention of HIV in the UK from the early 1980s to the present time. Drawing on interviews with people with HIV, doctors and nurses involved in their care, leaders of AIDS charities, activists, and politicians, it identifies and describes the models of care developed in response to the onset of the HIV epidemic, and its impact on NHS and voluntary organisations. It goes on to explore the political responses, the evolution of HIV stigma, and the personal impact of the early high mortality rates. Finally, it discusses recent organisational changes in the provision of care and prevention services. In doing so, this volume identifies the lessons learnt from the care and prevention of HIV, both in relation to HIV infection and other conditions, such as COVID-19, and discusses future challenges. This book will be of great value to those working in services dealing with HIV, charities, and Clinical Commissioning Groups and GP organisations, as well as social historians and medical sociologists.

Book HIV AIDS Community Information Services

Download or read book HIV AIDS Community Information Services written by M Sandra Wood and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information forms the basis for education, and currently education is the only weapon available to stem the spread of HIV/AIDS and to foster empathy toward individuals already affected by the disease. HIV/AIDS and Community Information Services provides readers with insight into the information construct within the AIDS arena and how that construct affects the provision of information services to the HIV/AIDS affected population. It will serve as an irreplaceable reference as the number of individuals with AIDS increases, creating a greater demand for information and making that information increasingly difficult to provide. While directories exist to assist with practical approaches to accessing HIV/AIDS-related information, none had served as a comprehensive resource concerning the nature of that information or the provision of information services. HIV/AIDS Community Information Services fills that void. It fosters the enlightenment of the general public concerning the true nature of HIV/AIDS, guides readers in providing information services--both educational and recreational--to individuals affected by HIV/AIDS, and encourages the dissemination of instructional materials to those individuals at risk for infection. In doing so, contributors provide readers with information about: the relationship between AIDS and the body of information concerning the disease the complex nature of HIV/AIDS-related information available HIV/AIDS information services information as a means for empowerment suggestions for future programs, potential collaboration efforts, and innovative services An essential guide for information professionals, librarians, health educators, counselors, members of community-based AIDS service organizations, and individuals affected by HIV/AIDS, HIV/AIDS Community Information Services foster the creation, accession, collection, organization, dissemination, and sharing of information concerning the HIV/AIDS epidemic and promotes the provision of services to individuals already affected by HIV/AIDS.

Download or read book AIDS in the UK written by Virginia Berridge and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1996-03-28 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifteen years ago the AIDS `epidemic' did not exist on the public agenda. In just over a decade the public and official response to the disease has resulted in the development of a whole network of organizations devoted to the study, containment, and practical treatment of AIDS. In this important and original analysis of AIDS policy, Virginia Berridge examines the speed and nature of the official (and unofficial) response to this new and critical historical event. The policy reaction in Britain passed through three stages. From 1981-1986 the outbreak of a new contagious disease led to public alarm and social stigmatization, with a lack of scientific certainty about the nature of the disorder. AIDS was a new and open policy area - there were no established departmental, local, or health authority mechanisms for dealing with the problem. This was a period of policy development from below, with relatively little official action and many voluntary initiatives behind the scenes. This phase was succeeded in 1986-1987 by a brief stage of quasi-wartime emergency, in which national politicians and senior civil servants intervened, and a high-level political response emerged. The response was a liberal one of `safe sex' and harm minimization rather than draconian notification or isolation of carriers. The author demonstrates that despite the `Thatcher revolution'in government in the 1980s, crisis could still stimulate a consensual response. The current period of `normalization' of the disease sees panic levels subsiding as the rate of growth slows and the fear of the unknown recedes. Official institutions have been established and formal procedures adopted and reviewed; paid professionals have replaced the earlier volunteers. The 1990s have seen change in the liberal consensus towards a harsher response and the partial repoliticization of AIDS. In this fascinating and scholarly account, Virginia Berridge analyses a remarkable period in contemporary British history, and exposes the reaction of the British political and medical elites, and of the British public to one of the most challenging issues of this century.

Book Remaking HIV Prevention in the 21st Century

Download or read book Remaking HIV Prevention in the 21st Century written by Sarah Bernays and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-26 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection brings together the social dimensions of three key aspects of recent biomedical advance in HIV research: Treatment as Prevention (TasP), new technologies such as Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), and the Undetectable equals Untransmittable (U=U) movement. The growth of new forms of biomedical HIV prevention has created hope for the future, signalling the possibility of a world without AIDS. In this context, the volume discusses the profound social, political and ethical dilemmas raised by such advances, which are to do with readiness, access, equity and availability. It examines how HIV prevention has been, and is, re-framed in policy, practice and research, and asks: How best can new biomedical technologies be made available in a profoundly unequal world? What new understandings of responsibility and risk will emerge as HIV becomes a more manageable condition? What new forms of blame will emerge in a context where the technologies to prevent HIV exist, but are not always used? How best can we balance public health’s concern for adherence and compliance with the rights of individuals to decide on what is best for themselves and others? Few of these questions have thus far received serious consideration in the academic literature. The editors, all leaders in the social aspects of HIV, have brought together an innovative and international collection of essays by top thinkers and practitioners in the field of HIV. This book is an important resource for academics and professionals interested in HIV research. Chapters "Anticipating Policy, Orienting Services, Celebrating Provision: Reflecting on Scotland’s PrEP Journey", "How the science of HIV treatment-as-prevention restructured PEPFAR’s strategy: The case for scaling up ART in ‘epidemic control’ countries", "Stigma and confidentiality indiscretions: Intersecting obstacles to the delivery of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis to adolescent girls and young women in east Zimbabwe" and "The drive to take an HIV test in rural Uganda: a risk to prevention for young people?" are available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.

Book excerpt: AIDS is not simply a concern for scientists, doctors and medical researchers, it has important social dimensions too. These include cultural, individual and media responses to HIV/AIDS, stigmatization and discrimination, perceptions of risk, and issues to do with counselling, care and health promotion. This series of books brings together work from many disciplines including psychology, sociology, cultural and media studies, anthropology, education and history. It also contains anthologies of papers given at recent conferences concerned with the social aspects of AIDS/HIV. Many of the titles offer insight into contemporary research priorities and identify some of the opportunities open to those involved in care and health promotion. The series will be of interest to those involved in education and social research as well as scientific and medical researchers who want to examine the social aspects of AIDS.
