Book Differences in Health Related Quality of Life Among People Living with HIV AIDS Receiving Case Management

Download or read book Differences in Health Related Quality of Life Among People Living with HIV AIDS Receiving Case Management written by Nicole I. Cesnales and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Background: Individuals living in rural areas may experience challenges in accessing affordable and appropriate medical care and support, often resulting in declines in health related quality of life. This is especially true for individuals diagnosed with HIV disease. While only one third of the US population lives in the south, over two thirds of all rural AIDS cases occur in this region. Fewer than 1,500 individuals are reported to be living with HIV/AIDS in the northern region of Florida commonly referred to as the Big Bend area. This predominantly rural region includes the eight counties located between the Gulf of Mexico and the Florida-Georgia border. Purpose: The purpose of this dissertation was to identify the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) status of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) in the Big Bend area who receive case management services. Questions: The following questions are addressed: 1. What is the HRQoL status for PLHA residing in the Big Bend area receiving case management services? 2. How much do previously identified correlates account for variances in HRQoL among PLHA residing in the Big Bend area? Method: A cross-sectional descriptive survey method assessed the demographic characteristics and HRQoL variables for approximately 97 PLHA who reside in the Big Bend area and receive case management. Group comparisons were made based on demographic and socioeconomic status characteristics, behavioral factors, disease status, symptom status, and functional status. Significance: The results reveal that PLHA who receive HIV case management in the Big Bend area have mild symptom burdens, are only mildly functionally impaired, yet have poor quality of life. Few group differences were observed. Three significant findings were present. First, among PLHA who take highly active antiretroviral treatment (HAART), those with AIDS reported more concerns about the impact that HIV medications have had on their life than those who do not have AIDS. Secondly, those who report using tobacco products are less satisfied with their life than tobacco non-users and, more interestingly, those who report using tobacco products are less accepting of their HIV status than those who do not use tobacco, even when controlling for other variables. And finally, those who report using illicit drugs have significantly more concerns about family, friends, and coworkers finding out about their HIV status than those who do not report using illicit drugs. Implications for HIV case management and social work policy and practice are discussed.

Book Evaluating HIV AIDS Treatment Programs

Download or read book Evaluating HIV AIDS Treatment Programs written by George J Huba and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-03 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Create effective community-based programs for substance abusers with HIV/AIDS! Substance abusers are the fastest-growing population of people with HIV/AIDS in the US--and one of the hardest to reach and treat. Evaluating HIV/AIDS Treatment Programs offers new strategies for providing care for this vulnerable population. The programs evaluated and discussed in this volume were funded as part of the DHHS Health Resources and Services Administration through its Special Projects of National Significance Program. Collectively known as the SPNS Cooperative Agreement, these 27 projects represent a diverse group of organizations with a common goal: to improve the health, quality of life, and access to health care for traditionally underserved populations living with HIV/AIDS. Evaluating HIV/AIDS Treatment Programs reports in detail the efforts of several community-based HIV/AIDS organizations in the SPNS program. You will learn how these organizations provide high-quality care for persons with HIV who are unlikely to obtain it in the traditional hospital-based service system. This volume offers specific, proven strategies designed to overcome the linguistic, cultural, racial, and economic barriers that make it difficult for some sick people to get the health care they need. It also offers specialized medical care models that work within the context of a continuum of services in a medical clinic. Evaluating HIV/AIDS Treatment Programs also highlights other aspects of the Cooperative Agreement projects, including: a study of end-stage AIDS care an overview of the HRSA HIV/AIDS Bureau SPNS Cooperative Agreement grant initiative a study of conceptual issues in implementing program evaluation in real-world community organizations discussion of the online Knowledge Base that summarizes and disseminates information from the Cooperative Agreement projects studies of ways to reach and care for specific populations with HIV/AIDS, including women, Latinos, Haitians, adolescents, and rural people This valuable volume offers solid data on treating people who are all too often neglected by the medical community even before they contract HIV/AIDS. The programs and ideas presented in Evaluating HIV/AIDS Treatment Programs can be applied to other community-based health initiatives and clinics offering medical care to underserved and vulnerable populations. This essential resource deserves a permanent place on their bookshelf of any physician, administrator, or policymaker working in the fields of HIBV/AIDS, epidemiology, public health, or substance abuse. Book excerpt: The world continues to lose more than a million lives each year to the HIV epidemic, and nearly two million individuals were infected with HIV in 2017 alone. The new Sustainable Development Goals, adopted by countries of the United Nations in September 2015, include a commitment to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030. Considerable emphasis on prevention of new infections and treatment of those living with HIV will be needed to make this goal achievable. With nearly 37 million people now living with HIV, it is a communicable disease that behaves like a noncommunicable disease. Nutritional management is integral to comprehensive HIV care and treatment. Improved nutritional status and weight gain can increase recovery and strength of individuals living with HIV/AIDS, improve dietary diversity and caloric intake, and improve quality of life. This book highlights evidence-based research linking nutrition and HIV and identifies research gaps to inform the development of guidelines and policies for the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. A comprehensive approach that includes nutritional interventions is likely to maximize the benefit of antiretroviral therapy in preventing HIV disease progression and other adverse outcomes in HIV-infected men and women. Modification of nutritional status has been shown to enhance the quality of life of those suffering HIV/AIDS, both physically in terms of improved body mass index and immunological markers, and psychologically, by improving symptoms of depression. While the primary focus for those infected should remain on antiretroviral treatment and increasing its availability and coverage, improvement of nutritional status plays a complementary role in the management of HIV infection.

Book Health Related Quality of Life Among Persons Living with HIV AIDS in 3 Hospital in Thailand

Download or read book Health Related Quality of Life Among Persons Living with HIV AIDS in 3 Hospital in Thailand written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A cross sectional study looked at the association between sociodemographic factors, HIV/AIDS clinical history and health-related quality of life (QOL) in HIV/AIDS persons. It used the WHOQOL-BREF-THAI questionnaire completed by 3,596 patients during 2008 in three Thai hospitals. The questionnaire explored five QOL domains: Physical, Psychological, Social, Environment and Overall and it was for the first time administered to many HIV/AIDS patients in Thailand. Descriptive statistics and inferential statics (bivariate and multivariate : one-way ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis Test, Pearson Correlation and independent ttest)) were used to test association between independent factors and QOL. Results: The following associations were all statistically significant. Males had higher QOL than females in Physical, Psychological and Overall domains. Younger age was associated with higher QOL in Physical and Social domains, older age in Psychological and Environment domains. Married had higher psychological QOL than single and separated. Good adherence to, more than 3 year duration of ARV treatment and not suffering AIDS related events were associated with higher QOL in all except social domains. VL

Download or read book Mental Health Practitioner s Guide to HIV AIDS written by Sana Loue and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-09 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although efforts have been made and continue to be made to reduce the rate of HIV transmission in the U.S. and globally, the rates continue to increase in the majority of countries. In the U.S., members of minority communities remain especially at risk of HIV transmission. An individual’s discovery that he or she has contracted HIV, or that a loved one has contracted the illness, often raises significant issues that necessitate interaction with mental health professionals. Mental Health Practitioner’s Guide to HIV/AIDS serves as a quick desk reference for professionals who may be less familiar with the terminology used in HIV/AIDS care and services.

Book Quality of Life and Functional Status in a Low income Multiethnic HIV positive Population

Download or read book Quality of Life and Functional Status in a Low income Multiethnic HIV positive Population written by Damon J. Vidrine and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction of new medical treatments in recent years, commonly referred to as highly active antiretroviral therapy, has greatly increased the survival of patients with HIV/AIDS. As patients with HIV/AIDS continue to live longer, other important health-related outcomes, such as quality of life (QOL), should be thoroughly studied. There is also evidence that racial/ethnic minorities are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS, but potential health disparities among individuals already infected with HIV/AIDS have not been adequately examined in ethnically diverse populations. The purpose of this dissertation was to: (1) examine the impact of both demographic and behavioral variables on functional status and overall QOL among a population of ethnically diverse and economically disadvantaged HIV/AIDS patients; (2) examine the psychometric properties of a functional status measure--the Household and Leisure Time Activities questionnaire (HLTA); and (3) assess a proximal-distal theoretical framework for QOL using a full structural equation model in a population of patients with HIV/AIDS. Analyses were performed using data collected in the fall of 2000 from the project, Health and Work-Related Quality of Life and Health Risk Behaviors in a Multiethnic HIV-positive Population . Investigators from The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, The University of Texas-Houston Medical School, and The University of Texas School of Public Health conducted this project. The study site was the Thomas Street Clinic (TSC), a comprehensive HIV/AIDS care facility funded by the Harris County Hospital District (HCHD). TSC provides HIV/AIDS care to a diverse population of approximately 4000 medically indigent residents of Harris County. A systematic, consecutive sampling procedure yielded a sample size of 348 patients. Findings suggested that overall QOL, work-role functioning, household functioning, and leisure time functioning were impaired in this patient population. Results from the psychometric evaluation indicated that the HLTA was a reliable and valid measure of household and leisure time functioning status in a low-income multiethnic HIV-positive population. Finally, structural equation modeling of the proximal-distal QOL model suggested that this model was not a viable representation of the relationship between the study variables in this patient population.

Download or read book Aging with HIV written by Janice E. Nichols and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2002-08-13 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1998, approximately 30 million people worldwide were living with HIV/AIDS, about 5 million of whom became infected that year. The epidemic continues to expand, with an estimated doubling time of 10 years, making AIDS the leading infectious cause of death ahead of tuberculosis and malaria. Even in the U.S.A. where the death rate from AIDS is declining as a result of effective drug therapies, HIV infection rates continue to climb in several population groups. The prevalence of AIDS among people over the age of 50 is steadily increasing, and most older people are unprepared to address it for a number of reasons, including the widespread discomfort with matters sexual and homosexual and the belief that elderly people are not sexually active and therefore not at risk. This guide for care providers seeks to educate and inform readers about the difficulties and complications that accompany the disease in older people. Thus, while the appendix includes technical descriptions of methodology, data, and results, the narratives in the chapters describing the findings and their practical implications are written in layman's language. Topics covered include biomedical aspects, demographics, sexuality, stressors, mental health, older women, and patient care, all of which are supported by case studies.

Book Treatment Adherence Health Related Quality of Life and Aging in HIV 1 Infected Patients

Download or read book Treatment Adherence Health Related Quality of Life and Aging in HIV 1 Infected Patients written by Nienke Langebeek and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A meta-analysis on predictors and correlates of adherence to cART showed that adherence was most strongly associated with patients' adherence-related beliefs. It suggests several potential options for interventions to improve adherence. One intervention, simplification of therapy to a fixed-dose was perceived to be more convenient, and resulted in improved adherence. There is no golden standard to measure adherence. A combination of methods were compared including EMD, diaries, self-reports, physician and nurse assessments, pill-counts, pharmacy refill, in-depth-interviews and TDM. The conclusion was that patient's self-reports, the estimation by nurse and the combination with TDM are easy to implement and can be used successfully in daily practice.Another meta-analysis was carry out to assess the effectiveness of EMD combined with informed counselling. The contribution of just monitoring-informed counselling to improve levels of adherence and virological treatment response is difficult to establish. It reflects that adherence is a behaviour that may be affected by a multitude of factors addressed by multi-component interventions. The age of HIV-1 infected adults increasing and therefore the onset of age-associated co-morbidities increases which may negatively affect HRQL.A cohort of HIV-negative and HIV-positive individuals > 45 years were screened for the presence of co-morbidities and completed questionnaires about HRQL and depression. HIV-positive status was associated with poor physical and mental HRQL and with increased likelihood of developing depression. No evidence was found that the difference in HRQL between HIV-infected and uninfected individuals became more pronounced with a higher number of co-morbidities, or at an older age. Abbreviations: cART: combination antiretroviral therapy; EMD: electronic monitoring device; TDM: therapeutic drug monitoring; HRQL: health related quality of life."--Samenvatting auteur.
