Book Urban Action Networks

Download or read book Urban Action Networks written by Howard Lune and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2007 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban Action Networks is a study of how communities organize in response to threats to their lives and well being. As HIV/AIDS wreaked havoc on the worlds of some of the most marginal and disenfranchised people in New York, they came together to create a shared response, forming a new organizational field within which their various efforts were coordinated. How the communities of the most affected people organized, reorganized, and redefined the social and political context of HIV/AIDS offers an encouraging glimpse into the way in which marginal communities can convert shared needs into collective action.

Book excerpt: This is an invaluable resource for lawyers, policy makers, and other practitioners with an interest in countries' responses to HIV/AIDS. Legal Aspects of HIV/AIDS: A Guide for Policy and Law Reform covers 65 wide-ranging topics in a concise, accessible format, explaining how laws and regulations can either underpin or undermine public health programs and responsible personal behavior. For each topic, the Guide summarizes the key legal or policy issues, provides relevant "practice examples" (citing actual laws and regulations), and offers a selective list of references that may be consulted for more information. Laws relating to many areas of our lives - from intimate physical conduct to international travel - can contribute to stigma, discrimination, and exclusion or, contrariwise, can help remedy these inequities. In order to create a supportive legal framework for responding to HIV/AIDS, it is important that governments effectively address gaps and other problematic aspects in their legislation and regulatory systems. This book, written by a team of leading legal experts, helps them do so.

Book excerpt: Recently, community-based HIV/AIDS organizations have expressed interest in developing more formal links with their counterparts in other countries and have begun to develop such links. The purpose of this publication is to enhance the ability of such organizations to undertake twinning with organizations in other countries. Chapter 1 introduces the concept of twinning, its benefits, and forms of twinning, and lists several examples of past or current twinning projects. Chapter 2 discusses the conditions that should be present before an organization takes on a twinning project. It describes characteristics of successful twinning, explains the advantages of twinning being a two-way process, and identifies several challenges associated with twinning projects. Chapter 3 considers some of the cultural issues that can arise in international twinning projects, including those related to intercultural understanding, communications, North-South dynamics, and language. The last chapter explains how the organization can get involved in a twinning project. A step-by-step format is used to provide guidance for the exploration stage and the planning stage. This is followed by information to help the organization implement and evaluate twinning projects.
