Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate older adults' knowledge and perceived susceptibility to HIV/AIDS and their perception of self-efficacy in avoiding HIV/AIDS. Older adults (n = 33) from a local senior center completed the AIDS Questionnaire measuring these concepts. Findings indicated no correlation between knowledge and perceived susceptibility, however, knowledge was strongly correlated with self-efficacy. The findings indicated that knowledge of HIV/AIDS was a significant predictor of self-efficacy. In this sample, additional findings indicated a statistically significant difference between ethnicity and HIV/AIDS knowledge. Asians reported lower knowledge, yet had higher perceived susceptibility and self-efficacy than other ethnic groups.

Book excerpt: Despite decades of attention on building a global HIV research and programming agenda, HIV in older populations has generally been neglected until recently. This new book focuses on HIV and aging in the context of ageism with regard to prevention, treatment guidelines, funding, and the engagement of communities and health and social service organizations. The lack of perceived HIV risk in late adulthood among older people themselves, as well on the part of providers and society in general, has led to a lack of investment in education, testing, and programmatic responses. Ageism perpetuates the invisibility of older adults and, in turn, renders current medical and social service systems unprepared to respond to patients’ needs. While ageism may lead to some advantages – discounts for services, for example – it is the negative aspects that must be addressed when determining the appropriate community-level response to the epidemic.

Book excerpt: The literature regarding the factors and prevention programs aimed to address HIV sexual risk among older adults is limited. This thesis research project aims to add to the literature by examining the factors that influence HIV sexual risk among older adults and the prevention programs that exist to address the problem among adults and older adults. This thesis research project is guided by the following research questions: 1) what factors are associated with HIV sexual risk among individuals aged 50 and over? and 2) what effect do individual-level programs, in comparison to group-level and multi-level programs, have on HIV sexual risk among adults and older adults? The results indicated that risky sexual behaviors among older adults were correlated with substance abuse, relationship factors that involved partner-related risk and self-silencing behaviors, mental health, low HIV risk perceptions, and lack of HIV knowledge. Additionally, the literature revealed that prevention program types, such as: motivational interviewing, behavioral skills-training, counseling, HIV/AIDS education, and condom skills-training were effective in increasing condom-use and condom-negotiation skills among adults and older adults.

Approximately one-quarter of community-dwelling Americans aged 65 and older are considered to be socially isolated, and a significant proportion of adults in the United States report feeling lonely. People who are 50 years of age or older are more likely to experience many of the risk factors that can cause or exacerbate social isolation or loneliness, such as living alone, the loss of family or friends, chronic illness, and sensory impairments. Over a life course, social isolation and loneliness may be episodic or chronic, depending upon an individual's circumstances and perceptions. A substantial body of evidence demonstrates that social isolation presents a major risk for premature mortality, comparable to other risk factors such as high blood pressure, smoking, or obesity. As older adults are particularly high-volume and high-frequency users of the health care system, there is an opportunity for health care professionals to identify, prevent, and mitigate the adverse health impacts of social isolation and loneliness in older adults. Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults summarizes the evidence base and explores how social isolation and loneliness affect health and quality of life in adults aged 50 and older, particularly among low income, underserved, and vulnerable populations. This report makes recommendations specifically for clinical settings of health care to identify those who suffer the resultant negative health impacts of social isolation and loneliness and target interventions to improve their social conditions. Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults considers clinical tools and methodologies, better education and training for the health care workforce, and dissemination and implementation that will be important for translating research into practice, especially as the evidence base for effective interventions continues to flourish.
