Book Women the Law and HIV AIDS in Africa

Download or read book Women the Law and HIV AIDS in Africa written by Florence Shu-Acquaye and published by Vandeplas Pub.. This book was released on 2008 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the discovery of AIDS in 1981, the pandemic has ravaged through all continents of the world, but the impact has been greatest in Sub Saharan Africa where 68% of the world's infected persons live. Women are hardest hit with 50% of infected adults in 2007 being women. There are currently 13.3 million women living with HIV and AIDS in Sub Saharan Africa, making it critical to further focus attention on women of the region. This book attempts to highlight the plight of these women, and the challenges they face daily within their particular societal context. With the advent of and access to antiretroviral drugs and improved technology in the management of HIV and AIDS, it has been rendered a chronic disease in developed countries, but not so in Sub Saharan Africa. The first chapter of this book examines the epidemiology, manifestations and general management of the problem in a setting where prevention and access to antiretroviral drugs has been compounded in many ways by various factors including poverty and lack of regulations that govern rights. The socio-cultural dimensions are examined, reflecting the impact of HIV/AIDS on women, and the urgent need for relevant policies and legislation in the African continent. The law inevitably plays an important role and the issue in most cases is not whether there is an acceptable or even applicable law in place, but whether is enforced. This book illustrates that there exist many good laws both at domestic and international treaty levels to address many of the challenges women face in Africa. The United Nations Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), one such existing international treaty, is among the strongest women's rights treaties, with many African countries signatory to it. This has not alleviated the predicaments of many African women, who are still suffering from all kinds of discrimination in virtually every aspect of their lives. Regional human rights initiatives, such as the Human and People's Rights Commission, which is charged by the African Charter to promote human rights and ensure their protection in Africa, as well as the African Court of Human Rights, which is mandated to be knowledgeable about all aspects concerning the interpretation and application of the charter, put forward in their provisions protection for the women. Again, the challenge is how to prompt African States to respect and implement women's rights in a sustained manner. This is critical for African countries, where, without government commitment, successful implementation would be uncertain, possibly unachievable. This book highlights the need for the governments to forge partnerships not only with their own officials, and other stakeholders but also with women and various women representative groups. The contributions of women to policy discussions on HIV/AIDS should be systematically solicited. Strategies, policies and activities to reverse the AIDS pandemic in the continent cannot succeed unless women are empowered to meaningfully contribute and participate to these, and are an integral part of the leadership that sets the agenda for change and development.

Download or read book Love Money and HIV written by Sanyu A. Mojola and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do modern women in developing countries experience sexuality and love? Drawing on a rich array of interview, ethnographic, and survey data from her native country of Kenya, Sanyu A. Mojola examines how young African women, who suffer disproportionate rates of HIV infection compared to young African men, navigate their relationships, schooling, employment, and finances in the context of economic inequality and a devastating HIV epidemic. Writing from a unique outsider-insider perspective, Mojola argues that the entanglement of love, money, and the transformation of girls into Òconsuming womenÓ lies at the heart of womenÕs coming-of-age and health crises. At once engaging and compassionate, this text is an incisive analysis of gender, sexuality, and health in Africa.

Book Women s Property Rights HIV and AIDS Domestic Violence

Download or read book Women s Property Rights HIV and AIDS Domestic Violence written by Human Sciences Research Council and published by HSRC Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revealing how women in many developing countries do not have the right to own or inherit property, this monograph clarifies the role of tenure security in protecting against and mitigating the effects of HIV amongst women and domestic violence. Exploring these linkages in Amajuba, South Africa, and Iganga, Uganda, this qualitative work based on peer-reviewed scientific studies and personal interviews with native women argues that property ownership, while not easily linked to women’s ability to prevent HIV infection, can nonetheless mitigate the impact of AIDS and enhance a woman’s ability to leave a violent situation. An invaluable resource for policymakers, western donors, nongovernmental organization workers, and academics, this analysis details the current land reform efforts as well as HIV/AIDS and domestic-violence policies in both countries, in Africa as a whole, and beyond.

Download or read book Legal Aspects of HIV AIDS written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2007 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an invaluable resource for lawyers, policy makers, and other practitioners with an interest in countries' responses to HIV/AIDS. Legal Aspects of HIV/AIDS: A Guide for Policy and Law Reform covers 65 wide-ranging topics in a concise, accessible format, explaining how laws and regulations can either underpin or undermine public health programs and responsible personal behavior. For each topic, the Guide summarizes the key legal or policy issues, provides relevant "practice examples" (citing actual laws and regulations), and offers a selective list of references that may be consulted for more information. Laws relating to many areas of our lives - from intimate physical conduct to international travel - can contribute to stigma, discrimination, and exclusion or, contrariwise, can help remedy these inequities. In order to create a supportive legal framework for responding to HIV/AIDS, it is important that governments effectively address gaps and other problematic aspects in their legislation and regulatory systems. This book, written by a team of leading legal experts, helps them do so.

Book HIV AIDS and the Law

Download or read book HIV AIDS and the Law written by Donald Dickson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-04 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although morbidity among HIV/AIDS victims has decreased, the rate of new infections has remained steady for several years, substantially increasing the likelihood that this epidemic will continue and expand as a concern for social workers and their clientele, both of whom will need to be kept informed of the complex laws governing the milieu and the consequences of the disease. This is certainly the case with its spread throughout Asia and Africa. In this new work, the author draws upon statutes and court decisions from across the United States to provide a comprehensive and current picture of the many facets of HIV/AIDS law, including health policy; confidentiality; privacy; bioethics; the workplace; and criminal law and corrections. The volume of legal, medical, social science, and popular literature pertaining to HIV/AIDS that has been published over the past two decades is staggering. Hence, any addition to this collection needs some justification. What Dickson offers is different from what has preceded. Rather than one more contribution to the extensive legal or social science literature, this book attempts to integrate the perspectives from two fields: law and social work. The hope is that this will give social workers, practitioners, and teachers a better understanding of one of the major issues that may face them in their work with patients and clients every day.To date, although there is extensive HIV and AIDS-related literature in social work and the social sciences, it is primarily focused on social work practice issues. Where law has been introduced in these works, it often is narrow in focus and, given the rapid changes in the field, no longer up to date. This book does not purport to discuss all legal issues in all jurisdictions relating to HIV/AIDS, but rather to choose selectively those that have particular relevance for social work and social policy. The author has placed reliance on those published medical works cited with approval in the legal and

Book Legal Responses to AIDS in Comparative Perspective

Download or read book Legal Responses to AIDS in Comparative Perspective written by S. J. Frankowski and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 1998-10-28 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a collection of ten essays on legal responses to HIV/AIDS, written by scholars from five continents (Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe & America). Each essay deals with HIV/AIDS-related problems in the author's country. An effort was made to select highly-diversified countries belonging to different families of law, the countries varying in their political, ethnic, & religious backgrounds. The contributors were encouraged to explore the links between HIV/AIDS-related problems & other social issues. They were also encouraged to reflect upon the limits & effectiveness of legal measures in reducing the growth of the epidemic. Finally, the goal of the project was to find whether it is possible to achieve a proper balance between the need to protect societies from the scourge of AIDS & the need to protect the rights of those afflicted by the disease.
