Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Wexford County, Michigan: Embracing a Concise Review of Its Early Settlement, Industrial Development and Present Conditions The same is true in writing the history of a city or community. There are always reasons why people congregate in one place rather than another, in starting a village that may grow into a great city, and these reasons are always of interest to the reader and give him a far better conception of the subject matter that is to follow. What is true of an individual or a city is equally true of a county. There is always an interest in contemplating the reasons which lead people to leave an old settled country, where every facility for comfort and enjoyment are within reach, and emigrate to a wilderness country, remote from civilization, and destitute of even the most necessary conveniences that minister to the comfort of the individual. Download or read book Irish Immigrants in Michigan A History in Stories written by Pat Commins & Elizabeth Rice and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2021 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To leave or stay was the question for the Irish in the nineteenth century. In Ireland, people suffered persecution, poverty and famine. America offered freedom and opportunity. For those who left and came to Michigan, the land's abundant natural resources encouraged them to become loggers, miners, fishermen, traders and farmers. Others became rail workers, merchants, lawyers, soldiers, doctors and teachers. Governor Frank Murphy advocated for civil rights. Sister Agnes Gonzaga Ryan administered schools and hospitals. Charlie O'Malley provided generously to suffering Irish people. Lighthouse keeper James Donohue never let physical disability deter him. Prospector Richard Langford discovered iron ore and then left others to mine its wealth. Authors Pat Commins and Elizabeth Rice share one story from each Michigan county about Irish immigrants or their descendants.

Download or read book Lake County written by Lake County Historical Society and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2009-11-09 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Native Americans roamed the beautiful lands of northern Michigan for many years, leaving a legacy of mature forests, clear waters, and plentiful game. By 1871, waves of immigrants were arriving from Europe, as well as Union soldiers after the Civil War. These pioneers brought with them the tools, know-how, and determination to transform the wild land into an economy based on the timber, railroads, and farming. Schools, churches, businesses, and tourism blossomed. The county's 156 lakes and 46 trout streams offered pristine settings for swimming, boating, hunting, and fishing. Resorts, sporting clubs, and cottage colonies sprang up to meet the needs of seasonal visitors. Early fishing guide and hotelier Andrew J. Bradford, financiers Curtis W. MacPhail and Robert J. Smith, philanthropist Martin Johnson, and others nurtured the growth of the communities. The Civilian Conservation Corps replanted the forests and built roads, the African American resort of Idlewild showcased black entertainers, and Raymond W. Overholzer built Shrine of the Pines, all promoting the county's development.
