Book excerpt: The story of Waterville and its surrounds is one of astonishingly rapid growth and prosperity. The city flourished on the wave of the Second Industrial Revolution. Its ever-multiplying mills drew workers from around the world, and its streets were filled with merchants of every kind. The boom, of course, could not last, and before the end of the 20th century Waterville had barely anything to do with the water at all. The once-thriving industries were all gone, and the proud river city, like so many others in the north, began a long struggle to reinvent itself and recover its missing pride.

Book excerpt: Following the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794 and the end of the War of 1812, the Maumee Valley became open to settlement. John Pray arrived in 1817, built a dam to run a mill, and the site became known as Pray's Falls. By 1831, Pray had platted the first 50 lots and called it Waterville. Others were attracted to the area, and the trading post inn that Pray had constructed in 1828 was greatly enlarged in 1837. The Columbian House became an important stop on the stagecoach run between Fort Wayne and Detroit and the social center of the village. In 1843, when the Miami and Erie Canal opened through Waterville, there was an economic boom. The business center of town moved from Main Street (River Road) to Third Street, and the town was incorporated in 1882.

Of all the magnificent pageants this country has ever seen, from its settlement to the present year, none in point of interest can compare to the grand review of the armies of the Union on May 23 and 24, 1865. The most causeless, cruel, bloody war in the world's history had just been brought to a triumphant close by the surrender of the army of Northern Virginia, under General Robert E. Lee, to General Grant, at Appomattox, April 9th, and the surrender of Johnston's and all confederate armies east of the Mississippi by the military convention of April 26th. The identical flag that was lowered from the flagstaff of Fort Sumter by Major Robert Anderson April 14, 1861, was floating over Fort Sumter again, having been raised by Brevet Major General Robert Anderson on the 14th of April, 1865 the fourth anniversary to commemorate in the most fitting manner the restoration of national authority on the spot where the great rebellion was first inaugurated. On the evening of that same day, President Lincoln had fallen a victim to the hate engendered by the war, by the bullet of John Wilkes Booth, at Ford's theatre in Washington. May 18th, by Special Orders No.239, war department, adjutant general's office, a grand review by General Grant, President Johnson and cabinet, was ordered of all the armies then near Washington; to take place May 23rd and 24th.
