Book excerpt: Warren County's townships, nestled in the northwest corner of Pennsylvania, were originally formed from the land grants awarded by William Penn and his descendants to many individuals and families. Warren County was established March 12, 1800, and grew in prosperity from agriculture, lumber, oil, rafting, railroads, and tanning. The Allegheny National Forest and Allegheny River both provide magnificent arenas for many local recreational and business opportunities. In 1965, Warren County became home to the Kinzua Dam as the flooding of Corydon and parts of Kinzua Township created the reservoir. While most of the eastern and southern parts of the county are broken and hilly, the northeastern section is mostly glacial territory. Hearts Content in Watson Township is one of the few virgin timber tracts remaining in the Allegheny National Forest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Warren County, Pennsylvania: With Illustrations and Biographical Sketches of Some of Its Prominent Men and Pioneers While it may seem to the uninitiated a task involving but little difficulty to prepare for publication a work no more comprehensive in character than this volume and containing the history merely of a single county, still it is not out of place here to assure all such readers that the work is one demand ing a vast amount of labor and research, watchful care, untiring patience, and great discrimination. This need not be said to any person who has had ex perience in similar work. In attempting the production of a creditable history of Warren County, the publishers and the editor did not underestimate the difficulties of their task, and came to it fully imbued with a clear idea of its magnitude, and a determination to execute it in such a manner that it should receive the commendation of all into whose hands it should fall. It is believed that this purpose has been substantially carried out, and that, while a perfect historical work has never yet been published, this one will be found to contain so few imperfections that the most critical reader will be satisfied. Book excerpt: Nestled in the heart of northwestern Pennsylvania in the Allegheny National Forest, Warren was founded in 1795 and incorporated as a borough in 1832. The new borough was a thriving lumbering center in its early days and continued to grow along with the burgeoning oil and railroad industries. Over the ensuing decades, Warren's prosperity and other attractions lured flocks of new residents who combined to create a proud community. Warren is a compilation of nearly two hundred photographs drawn from the extensive collections held at the Warren County Historical Society. This invaluable book begins with the early days of oil and lumbering in the nineteenth century, through the town's first centennial celebration in 1895, the days of the Warren Street Railway, and into the twentieth century and an infamous courtroom scandal of the 1950s. Warren serves as an invitation to reminisce about the institutions, influential Warrenites, companies, celebrations, and events that have shaped this historical community's rich and extensive past.
