XI Miscellaneous Town Subjects Manufactures The value of the water-power afforded by the Ware River was recognized at an early date, the river dropping seventy feet in less than a quarter of a mile; but with the exception of saw and grist mills already described, there was no utilization of the power until after 1813, when Alpheus Demond and Col. Thomas Denny purchased the Magoon property, consisting of some 400 acres of land, for $4,500. They built a new dam above where the lower stone bridge now stands, repaired the saw-mill and grist-mill, started two carding machines, and a small plant for making machinery. The machine shop stood just above the bridge on the north side of the river. The carders were intended to supply merely a local need. Colonel Denny died in 1814, and the business was not pushed. Early in the year 1821 the entire property was purchased by Holbrook and Dexter of Boston for $15,000, and a company formed in which a number of wealthy and influential Boston men were interested. In 1823 the Ware Manufacturing Co. was incorporated with a capital of $600,000. Gardner Green was president. John Tappan, Samuel Hubbard and S. V. S. Wilder were among the directors. The company at once erected a woollen mill on the south side of the river, a part of which is still standing, by far the oldest of the factory buildings in Ware. In 1824 the Company branched out and built a large mill, 271 feet long, a little farther up the river, taking its power from the upper falls. Great expense was involved in making the water-power available, as a large amount of excavation through the solid rock was necessary, and the Company failed within a few years. In the "Gazetteer of Massachusetts " published in 1828 by Jeremiah Spofford there are...

Book Candy Cummings

Download or read book Candy Cummings written by Stephen Robert Katz and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-03-31 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the greatest pitchers of his era, William Arthur "Candy" Cummings was born in 1848, when baseball was in its infancy. In the 1870s, Candy's invention, the curveball, played a transformative role and earned him a place in the Hall of Fame. Drawing on extensive research, this first full-length biography traces Candy's New England heritage and chronicles his rise to the top, from pitching for amateur teams in mid-1860s Brooklyn to playing in the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players--the first major league--and then the newly-formed National League. A critical examination of the evidence and competing claims reveals that Cummings was, indeed, the originator of the curveball.

Book excerpt: In 1716, Harvard-educated minister John Read purchased the larger part of what was to become the town of Ware, Massachusetts, and named it "The Manour of Peace." The manour's greatest asset was its river, which first provided fish for Indians and other early settlers and later fueled the town's great nineteenthcentury mills. Ware, compiled by Warren Bacon and Claudia Chicklas, chronicles the history of the town from the latter half of the nineteenth century to the 1970s, focusing on the people of the community and the contributions they made to its development. From leaders of industry and society to barefoot children in a rural school; from clergymen to high school athletes and the major-league Ware native who invented the curve ball, Ware offers vintage images and important historical information about the town's past.

Book A People s History of London

Download or read book A People s History of London written by John Rees and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2012-06-19 with total page 1016 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the eyes of Britain's heritage industry, London is the traditional home of empire, monarchy and power, an urban wonderland for the privileged, where the vast majority of Londoners feature only to applaud in the background. Yet, for nearly 2000 years, the city has been a breeding ground for radical ideas, home to thinkers, heretics and rebels from John Wycliffe to Karl Marx. It has been the site of sometimes violent clashes that changed the course of history: the Levellers' doomed struggle for liberty in the aftermath of the Civil War; the silk weavers, match girls and dockers who crusaded for workers' rights; and the Battle of Cable Street, where East Enders took on Oswald Mosley's Black Shirts. A People's History of London journeys to a city of pamphleteers, agitators, exiles and revolutionaries, where millions of people have struggled in obscurity to secure a better future.

Book History of the Episcopal Church of Liberia Since 1980

Download or read book History of the Episcopal Church of Liberia Since 1980 written by D. Elwood Dunn and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-05-13 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is a sequel to A History of the Episcopal Church in Liberia 1821–1980 (1992). It is a narrative shaped by contexts—context of the Episcopal Church and its Christian witness through the episcopacies of Diocesan Bishops George Daniel Browne, Edward Wea Neufville II, and Jonathan B. B. Hart; the context of a modernizing Liberia plunged into unprecedented political violence by a military coup d’etat in 1980 and a devastating civil war that ensued and consumed the country for some 14 years; and the context of shifting external ties with the American Church, the Liberian Episcopal community in the United States, and the Church of the Anglican Province of West Africa. D. Elwood Dunn also examines what the church’s contemporary history uncovers about Liberia’s social history in its juxtaposition of national identity issues with religious syncretism (a mixture of African traditional religions, Islam, some elements of Christianity, and basic human secularism), while suggesting challenges for the Episcopal Church’s Christian witness going forward. All of this is done in four concise chapters successively addressing the episcopate of Bishop Browne, a critical interregnum period between Browne and his successor, Bishop Neufville, the episcopate of Neufville, and initiating the episcopate of incumbent Bishop Hart. This is followed by a general conclusion and assessment of the church’s work. The study ends with an epilogue on the Episcopal Church that was, the Church that is, and the Church of the future.

Book Arthur Ashe

  • Author : Eric Allen Hall
  • Publisher : JHU Press
  • Release : 2014-09-15
  • ISBN : 1421413957
  • Pages : 344 pages

Download or read book Arthur Ashe written by Eric Allen Hall and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first scholarly biography of one of the most famous athletes of our time shows how Ashe worked for civil rights while playing a country-club sport in a white man’s world. Winner of the CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title of the Choice ACRL Arthur Ashe explains how this iconic African American tennis player overcame racial and class barriers to reach the top of the tennis world in the 1960s and 1970s. But more important, it follows Ashe’s evolution as an activist who had to contend with the shift from civil rights to Black Power. Off the court, and in the arena of international politics, Ashe positioned himself at the center of the black freedom movement, negotiating the poles of black nationalism and assimilation into white society. Fiercely independent and protective of his public image, he navigated the thin line between conservatives and liberals, reactionaries and radicals, the sports establishment and the black cause. Eric Allen Hall’s work examines Ashe’s life as a struggle against adversity but also a negotiation between the comforts—perhaps requirements—of tennis-star status and the felt obligation to protest the discriminatory barriers the white world constructed to keep black people "in their place." Drawing on coverage of Ashe’s athletic career and social activism in domestic and international publications, archives including the Ashe Papers, and a variety of published memoirs and interviews, Hall has created an intimate, nuanced portrait of a great athlete who stood at the crossroads of sports and equal justice.
