Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Utah, Vol. 4 of 4: Biographical; Illustrated It was in the Spring of 1890 that the Bishop was engaged to write this History by a company organized for the purpose of publishing it, and which employed him at a stated monthly salary for the literary part of the work. The undertaking was gigantic. To carry it to success required years of hard labor on the part of the author, as well as the business heads of the concern; fighting against adverse conditions which were at times almost overwhelming; so that it may be imagined with what a sense of relief the Bishop lays aside his pen, and the publishers and proprietors also end their labors. Book Settling the Valley Proclaiming the Gospel

Download or read book Settling the Valley Proclaiming the Gospel written by Reid L. Neilson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-01 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mormons had just arrived in Utah after their 1,300-mile exodus across the Great Plains and over the Rocky Mountains. Food was scarce, the climate shocking in its extremes, and local Indian bands uneasy. Despite the challenges, Brigham Young and his counselors in the First Presidency sent church members out to establish footholds throughout the Great Basin. But the church leaders felt they had a commission to do more than simply establish Zion in the wilderness; they had to invite the nations to come up to "the mountain of the Lord's house." In these critical early years, when survival in Utah was precarious, missionaries were sent to every inhabited continent. The 14 general epistles, sent out from the First Presidency from 1849 to 1856, provide invaluable perspectives on the events of Mormon history as they unfolded during this complex transitional time. Woven into each epistle are missionary calls and reports from the field, giving the Mormons a glimpse of the wider world far beyond their isolated home. At times, the epistles are a surprising mixture of soaring doctrinal expositions and mundane lists of items needed in Salt Lake City, such as shoe leather and nails. Settling the Valley, Proclaiming the Gospel collects the 14 general epistles, with introductions that provide historical, religious, and environmental contexts for the letters, including how they fit into the Christian epistolary tradition by which they were inspired.

HENRY GRlFFlTHS. Fifty-eight years have been added to the cycle of the centuries since Henry Griffiths became a resident of Utah. He now makes his home in Smithfield, where he has lived retired since putting aside the active work of the farm in 1914. He had long been identified with ranching interests in this state, being but fourteen years of age at the time of his arrival here. He was born in Temby Pembrockshire, South Wales, November 17, 1847, a son of William and Elizabeth Griffiths. He came to Utah in 1861 with his parents, the family home being established in Willard, Boxelder county, where they took up the work of farming. Henry Griffiths there remained for ten years and then removed to Hyde Park, where he resided for a year, after which he became a resident of Benson. Book Lowell L Bennion

Download or read book Lowell L Bennion written by Mary Lythgoe Bradford and published by Dialogue Foundation. This book was released on 1995 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lowell L. Bennion is legendary in many circles. An LDS institute instructor and professor of sociology at the University of Utah, he was never content simply to quantify social ills or to preach against them but actively set out to correct what he could. He founded and directed the Teton Valley Boys Ranch, served as executive director for the Salt Lake City Community Services Council, and organized other charities. His heart was with the underprivileged. He detested Pharisaism and often quoted biblical passages on the topic adapted to a Mormon ear: As your treading is upon the poor, ... I hate, I despise your f(ast) days, and I will not (dwell in) your solemn assemblies ... Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear ... Woe unto them that are at ease in Zion. Bennion passed away in 1996 just after this biography was released, leaving an enormous void where he had been a beacon to humanitarian and liberation causes in his community.
