Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Trinidad, Vol. 2: From 1814 to 1839 The newly appointed Governor of Trinidad belonged to a good old English family, a strong point in his favour in a Colony in which good birth has always been fully appreciated. Towards the end of the 17th century, Matthew Woodford of New Sarum died, leaving a son, named Matthew after himself, who subsequently became Prebendary and Sub-Dean of Chichester Cathedral. He married Ann, daughter of John Sherer, Esq., of Chichester, by whom he had a son who also bore the name of Matthew, and who married Mary, daughter of John Brideoke, Esq., by whom he had issue: 1. Ralph - First Baronet. 2. Matthew, D.D. and Prebendary of Chester. 3. John, a Colonel in the Army, who married Susan, daughter of Cosmo George, 3rd Duke of Gordon and widow of John Fane, 9th Earl of Westmoreland, by whom he had two sons, Alexander and John George. Mr. Matthew Woodford had also three daughters, one of whom in January, 1760, married Peter Thellusson of Plaistow, Kent, and Broadsworth, Yorkshire, and had issue: Peter Isaac, the first Lord Rendlesham. Ralph, the first Baronet, was at one time Resident Minister at the Hanse Towns, and subsequently Minister Extraordinary at the Court of Denmark, and for his services was created a Baronet in June, 1791. He married Gertrude, daughter of - Reesen, Esq., by whom he had issue: Ralph James, second Baronet, born in 1784, the future Governor of Trinidad. Book History of Trinidad Vol 1

Download or read book History of Trinidad Vol 1 written by Lionel Mordaunt Fraser and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Trinidad, Vol. 1: From 1781 Ti 1813 Although nearly a century has elapsed since Don Jose Maria Chacon, the last Spanish Governor of Trinidad, capitulated to the British Naval and Military Forces under Harvey and Abercromby, but little was known until a comparatively recent date of an Island which should have had some interest for Englishmen in connexion with those rough sea dogs who were the Fathers of that magnificent Navy which, in these very days, has been admitted even by its rivals to be the first in the world. That Trinidad should have so sunk into oblivion - except, perhaps, in mercantile circles - is due to many causes, which the reader of this work will have no difficulty in discovering; fortunately it was not always to be so. In 1868, under the firm and able government of Sir Arthur Gordon, a new era commenced for the Colony; old prejudices and antiquated ideas were dispelled, and a totally new policy was given room for development. Not only did wise and comprehensive measures promote this most welcome change from within, but an incident occurred in 1869 which considerably affected the Island from without. The late lamented Charles Kingsley spent the Christmas of that year in Trinidad, and it is to his charming, gossippy "At Last" that the Island is mainly indebted for that constant stream of visitors who yearly visit its shores. Kingsley has been accused of exaggeration in his description of what he saw, and that the charge is somewhat true can hardly be denied. But what of that? It was eminently characteristic of that genial, buoyant to admire always rather than to contemn, and to find "Tongues in trees, books in the running brooks, Sermons in stones, and good in everything."
