Book History of the Worshipful Company of Pewterers of the City of London Vol 1

Download or read book History of the Worshipful Company of Pewterers of the City of London Vol 1 written by Charles Welch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-11 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Worshipful Company of Pewterers of the City of London, Vol. 1: Based Upon Their Own Records In one respect alone the records are disappointing. They do not include any register of makers' marks, nor do the Accounts contain receipts for registration fees. It is probable, therefore, that this registra tion was of the simplest character, and consisted merely of impressing the maker's mark upon the touch-plates at Pewterers' Hall. Most of the early marks are very small, and contain only the maker's initials, thus making it impossible to identify the mark with certainty, although the list of members of the Company extends, back to the middle of the fifteenth century. The earliest information of importance respecting the Company is found in their Ordinances for the year 1348, in the middle of the long reign of Edward III. The Company is described as the Craft of Pewterers and the Ordinances deal exclusively with matters relating to the trade. In the ancient oath, which bears every evidence of being at least as old as these Ordinances, there is associated with the Craft the Brotherhood of the Assumption of Our Lady. The main object of the regulations of 1348 was to enforce a high standard of quality and workmanship upon makers of English pewter, a reputation for which it has ever since been the great aim of the Company to maintain. Another early Ordinance for the regulation of the trade was approved by the Court of Aldermen on the 3oth of March, 1438. This was followed, six years later, by an Order of the Common Council grant ing the Company the right to purchase one-fourth part of all the tin brought up for Sale to London. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Worshipful Company of Pewterers of the City of London, Vol. 2: Based Upon Their Own Records The custom of requiring new brethren to present a silver spoon and the officers of the Yeomanry to give silver bowls or nests of cups provided the Company with a goodly store of plate, but this began to disappear as early as the close of Elizabeth's reign, when it became necessary to sell plate to comply with the royal demands for financial aid. Hawkers and pedlars proved a source of constant trouble to the Com pany, in spite of the severe penalties laid upon them by statutes and other ordinances. Book The Stationers Company and the Printers of London 1501 1557

Download or read book The Stationers Company and the Printers of London 1501 1557 written by Peter W. M. Blayney and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 1559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major, revisionist reference work explains for the first time how the Stationers' Company acquired both a charter and a nationwide monopoly of printing. In the most detailed and comprehensive investigation of the London book trade in any period, Peter Blayney systematically documents the story from 1501, when printing first established permanent roots inside the City boundaries, until the Stationers' Company was incorporated by royal charter in 1557. Having exhaustively re-examined original sources and scoured numerous archives unexplored by others in the field, Blayney radically revises accepted beliefs about such matters as the scale of native production versus importation, privileges and patents, and the regulation of printing by the Church, Crown and City. His persistent focus on individuals - most notably the families, rivals and successors of Richard Pynson, John Rastell and Robert Redman - keeps this study firmly grounded in the vivid lives and careers of early Tudor Londoners.

Book Crown Household and Parliament in Fifteenth Century England

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A. R. Myers's research in the history of late medieval England spanned more than forty years. Throughout his academic career 15th-century England, especially the documentary remnants of its administration, held his attention consistently though not exclusively. The relevant studies, fruits of his research in this field which were originally published in periodicals published over five decades, have here been brought together. As a corpus they provide a collection of important documents related to the crown, the royal household and parliament. Complete with a critical introduction by R. B. Dobson, this is the essential collection of the works of an influential historian of early modern England.
