Book excerpt: "Setting sail out of San Francisco in July 1879 with provisions for three years, this expedition had been lavishly equipped and fitted out by Mr. Gordon Bennett, the proprietor of the New York "Herald", best known for his sponsorship of Stanley's expedition in search of Livingstone. De Long intended to sail through the Bering Strait and to approach the Pole by way of the New Siberian Islands and Wrangel Island. Two years passed, and all that was known of the 'Jeannette' was that she had passed the Strait and had been seen in the vicinity of Wrangel Island. During those two years she had fought gallantly against the ice, but in spite of every effort the ship was crushed by the floes. Her crew escaped in three boats, but some perished in a storm, and most of those who reached land died from starvation and exposure. One of the greatest and most tragic tales from this period of exploration and one that vividly displays the perils these explorers put themselves through in the name of science. Pieces of the wreckage of the ship later washed up on the south-west shores of Greenland. The discovery of these fragments gave pause to another explorer, Dr. Fridtjof Nansen, who from this evidence postulated the existence of a vast current beneath the polar ice. On the basis of this theory he developed a plan to geta ship stuck fast in the ice and allow the current to drift the ship to the pole; the plan and its outcome were the subject of Nansen's FARTHEST NORTH."--Abebooks website

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The USS Jeannette left San Francisco in July of 1879 bound on a voyage of exploration to find a route to the North Pole via the Bering Strait. George W De Long had previously shown himself to be the stuff that exploration commanders were made of when, in 1873, he led a small party in the Little Juniata - a steam launch from the USS Juniata - on a search to Cape York for the US Steamer Polaris. His exploits on that trip are described in this book which consists of his journals edited by his wife, Emma. The Jeannette ended up being crushed and sunk by the arctic ice and De Long and his crew had to abandon ship into three small boats. Of these only one took its crew to safety whilst De Long and others perished slowly with his faithfully completed journal being updated to the last. The commander of one of the other vessels, Chief Engineer Melville, eventually found the remains of De Long and his party after a protracted search. This two volume set provides a poignant and well illustrated account of the man, his missions and the whole saga of arctic exploration at this time. As the book concludes; 'sacrifice is nobler than ease, unselfish life is consummated by lonely death, and the world is richer by this gift of suffering.'

Contemporaries described the pole as the ‘unattainable object of our dreams’, and the urge to fill in this last great blank space on the map grew irresistible. In 1879 the USS Jeannette set sail from San Francisco to cheering crowds and amid a frenzy of publicity. The ship and its crew, captained by the heroic George De Long, were destined for the uncharted waters of the Arctic. But it wasn’t long before the Jeannette was trapped in crushing pack ice. Amid the rush of water and the shrieks of breaking wooden boards, the crew found themselves marooned a thousand miles north of Siberia with only the barest supplies, facing a seemingly impossible trek across endless ice. Battling everything from snow blindness and polar bears to ferocious storms and frosty labyrinths, the expedition fought madness and starvation as they desperately strove for survival.

Book Our Lost Explorers the Narrative of the Jeannette Arctic Expedition as Related by the Survivors

Download or read book Our Lost Explorers the Narrative of the Jeannette Arctic Expedition as Related by the Survivors written by Richard W. Bliss and published by . This book was released on 1882 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1879-1881, a crew of thirty-three men, led by Lieutenant Commander George Washington DeLong, participated in an Arctic adventure that defines the limits of human endurance. The Navy-operated, but privately owned, steamer Jeannette left San Francisco, California, for the North Pole through what was then believed to be open water beyond the Arctic icepack. The Jeannette remained in the ice as it drifted to the northwest through the first half of 1881. During this time, the crew made scientific observations, hunted seals and polar bears. In May 1881, they landed on Henrietta Island, 600 miles from Wrangell. In June 1881 the ice parted and they hoped they might reach open sea, but on the 12th the flows closed in with such force that Jeannette's hull was crushed. Her crew removed three boats, supplies and some equipment and began a difficult trek, dragging the boats over the ice towards open water. They reached the Kotelnoi and Simonoski Islands in early September, after which the way was clear to sail to the Lena Delta. However, the three boats were separated in a storm. One, commanded by Lieutenant Charles W. Chipp and seven other men, was not seen again. The other two, commanded by DeLong with thirteen others and Chief Engineer George W. Melville with ten others, landed far apart on the delta. Melville's party was saved by local inhabitants. DeLong and his men trudged south over the desolate terrain. After one man died of the effects of frostbite and the others were weakened by exposure and hunger, Seamen Nindemann and Noros were sent ahead to find help. Before that materialized, the remaining eleven succumbed, with DeLong and two others surviving perhaps a few days beyond 30 October 1881, when he made his final journal entry. The bodies of ten were discovered in March 1882, as Melville conducted a search for the other members of the expedition, and were transported back to the United States in early 1884.
