Book History of the United States of America Vol 2 of 6

Download or read book History of the United States of America Vol 2 of 6 written by George Bancroft and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History of the United States of America from the Discovery Vol. 2 of 6 was written by George Bancroft, an American historian and statesman. During his purview as an elected official, Bancroft promoted education at both a state level and at a national level and successfully petitioned for numerous education reforms. In this six volume series, Bancroft explores a wide variety of locations, events, and historic individuals. Some of these events and individuals are relatively well known while others will be new to the reader as this publication compresses more information than other history books on the same topic. Bancroft likes to begin the laborious process of dissecting history by focusing in primarily on specific locations within the United States. In the text, Bancroft initially focuses on both very specific locations typically based on mutual cultures (such as New Netherlands) and larger locales based on similar political interests (such as the Southern states). After attributing locations to their own chapters, Bancroft then breaks down specific events in each location that occur within the time frame the volume is set within. Lastly, Bancroft determines key figures and persons of interest within each location and each time period, often those that are related to the specific events discussed, and shares information on them at length. History of the United States of America from the Discovery Vol. 2 of 6 is a wonderful exploration of American history through a leading historian in the field. George Bancroft goes above and beyond in his portrayal of important events and key figures in American history. His style of writing is very approachable and his text is easily organized for any reader to understand the course of events he describes within the text. Download or read book Edmund Burke in America written by Drew Maciag and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The statesman and political philosopher Edmund Burke (1729-1797) is a touchstone for modern conservatism in the United States, and his name and his writings have been invoked by figures ranging from the arch Federalist George Cabot to the twentieth-century political philosopher Leo Strauss. But Burke's legacy has neither been consistently associated with conservative thought nor has the richness and subtlety of his political vision been fully appreciated by either his American admirers or detractors. In Edmund Burke in America, Drew Maciag traces Burke's reception and reputation in the United States, from the contest of ideas between Burke and Thomas Paine in the Revolutionary period, to the Progressive Era (when Republicans and Democrats alike invoked Burke's wisdom), to his apotheosis within the modern conservative movement. Throughout, Maciag is sensitive to the relationship between American opinions about Burke and the changing circumstances of American life. The dynamic tension between conservative and liberal attitudes in American society surfaced in debates over the French Revolution, Jacksonian democracy, Gilded Age values, Progressive reform, Cold War anticommunism, and post-1960s liberalism. The post-World War II rediscovery of Burke by New Conservatives and their adoption of him as the "father of conservatism" provided an intellectual foundation for the conservative ascendancy of the late twentieth century. Highlighting the Burkean influence on such influential writers as George Bancroft, E. L. Godkin, and Russell Kirk, Maciag also explores the underappreciated impact of Burke's thought on four U.S. presidents: John Adams and John Quincy Adams, Theodore Roosevelt, and Woodrow Wilson. Through close and keen readings of political speeches, public lectures, and works of history and political theory and commentary, Maciag offers a sweeping account of the American political scene over two centuries.
